A French Bra Trick

A French Bra Trick

This summer, I’m curious to try out this different way of wearing a bra…

First off, what color bras do you wear? I have two black and two nude. I haven’t had a white bra since my childhood training bra.

But the other day, we were chatting with Allison Beale of Journelle, and she pointed out something interesting:

There is definitely a difference between American and French approaches to lingerie. We talk about this constantly around here. Most American women are not as bold in showing off their lingerie. There’s a basic understanding here — maybe it was a lesson we all learned from our mothers and grandmothers? — that bras are for support, coverage and not to be seen. A nude bra, the American staple, showcases your blouse. A white bra, which European women often wear, showcases your whole outfit, bra included.

Have you heard this before? European readers, do you wear white bras? I’m inspired to pair one with white tees and jeans this summer.

P.S. My underwear solution.

Western Canada – I own black, nude, and pink. They’re all lined. The nude gets worn under any shirt that would otherwise allow the shape/colour of my bra to show. And yes, if I saw anyone here bra-less or even with nipples un-smoothed, I would do a double-take! Not that I think it’s wrong to go bra-less or unlined, but it’s just so uncommon here. I wouldn’t want to go braless; I’m nursing and so I would a) leak and b) be uncomfortably unsupported. Even if not nursing, I would feel uncomfortable due to unwanted attention.

  2. Gigi says...

(American here…although I have lived in France and Latin America at various points in my life.)

During my personal time, I love wearing bright colored bras under sheer white tops, especially in the summer. I have several matching sets too! A trick I learned from my french friends is to buy 2 panties/bra so you can wear the bra 2x with clean panties and they will wear down at the same rate.

On the other hand, I do own several nude bras and there is a reason for this. I work in human resources and in the US, in most places of business, if your bra is showing it is considered inappropriate and can cause a variety of problems depending on your company policies and culture (from “sexual harassment” to getting fired). So for work, it is either nude, black, or navy bras for me. No straps will ever show and they must always be lined (not padded) because no nipples are allowed!

Lastly, I have some substantial boobies for my frame, making it very difficult to buy a lot of pretty bras (they usually don’t go up to my size 32F). Therefore, going bra-less in the summer is virtually impossible because the under-boob sweat would drip down and stain all my clothes, it is the WORST!

  3. I’m American, and I don’t wear bras that much anymore- maybe once a week I’ll wear one because my top is too sheer. It bugs me that people get offended by nipples or make a scene and stare at you for them. I don’t do it to feel sexy or anything, haha! I just have such a flat chest that it seems silly to wear something that doesn’t actually feel like its doing anything.

  4. So true!!! I am french and I wear black, white and a lot of colors as well!

  5. Petra says...

Hi, I’m from Romania (a European country as well). I own black and colored bras (like pink, blue, green, red) and whites as well. I don’t have a nude one, and interesting, like the girls who commented above, I don’t have friends who have nude bras. Most of the bras I and them wear have lace, which I personally find it to be sexy.

  6. Marília says...

Not European, not American either. I wear white, black and many other colors. Nude is the least “recommended here”. Many times hidden, but many times (especially when younger) showing a bit. Brazil, btw.

  7. AnneMette says...

I have never owned a nude bra! Mostly black or white ones – but also pink, dark blue, red.. The differences between Americans and Europeans are so interesting! :-)

  8. Ada says...

I have almost every colour except nude :-) And I am Polish (still European I hope…)

  9. I do wear a white bra as a european citizen lol :)
But my mother and her generation used to wear a bra that could not be seen, like the American women do ;)

    PS
I dont own any nude bra… the only one a I ever bought was the first one when I was a teen.

  10. Alice says...

Another French here. Something that amazes me is how women in many countries are obsessed with hiding their nipples. When I lived in France I never used to care about it. Now living abroad I always choose padded bras that will safely hide them, knowing that others find it offensive if a nipple can be seen poking through the fabric.
    or am I paranoid?

    • Martina says...

Yes, I agree, what’s up with nipples? (hi, Italian here!)
I’m flat chested and can’t standanything padded, so I rotate between decorative triangle numbers and, err, nothing at all. In both cases you can sometimes see the outline of my nipples, which is no big deal here – like, it’s normal to have nipples, no one cares. It’s not seen as an attempt to be sexy, just a bit carefree.
I also felt that it’s very different elsewhere, would anyone elaborate? :)

  11. Monika says...

Hello, Poland here. I own bras in many color and white one is the best! As someone said before I also feel like bra is part of the outfit

  12. Lisa says...

Sweden here! I wear them in all colours with exception of nude – I just havent felt the need for one. Black, blue, grey and purple are my favourites, I think white tends to go grey and discoloured too fast for my liking. Just learn the fine line between letting them show in a subtle and sexy way, versus sleezy and trashy..

  13. It really depends on the occasion! I mostly go black or nude, and have a few fun Betsy Johnson-esque bras that I’ll wear under dark tops. If I’m wearing a tank, I go for bikini tops – and bandeaus. My workout bras are all kiiiiinds of fun prints. Lately I’ve been liking to layer lace bralettes under strapped sundresses – even white colors.

  14. Alicia says...

I am Spanish and I agree Virginia. My favorite colors for bras are black and white. In fact, in Spain we consider nude bra as unsexy.

  15. Lina says...

Switzerland here :) I wear nude or black bras to work depending on the color of my blouse/top . But in summer and off work I definitely like to wear white, cream and light blue bras or even a lacy black one underneath a white tee.

  16. Brussels (Belgium) here! Waiving all sort of colored and patterned bras, but no nude. I’ve never owned one. Makes me think of grandma tights.. eek!

I wear white bras occasionally under white ts and always under white shirt dresses. That’s all, for the crisp, tailored look. Under tshirts, even white ones, I tend to wear colored ones (anything but black).

And I can be easy going all you want I always invest and wear nice underwear. Makes you feel so feminine. It’s something my mother taught me.

  17. Marianne says...

Yes, I wear white bra and I’m Norwegian. I wear white and black, and sometimes pink and red, but they are all t-shirt bras.

  18. Kristine says...

This makes me want to throw away all my nude bras! Next up: white and color, color, color. Thanks for inspiring me, as strange as that sounds, to not conform to the norm.

  19. I’m peruvian and i have nude bras, black bras and floral bras. But i have to admit that the colorful ones were a present from my mom who used to live in Italy.

  20. Emily says...

So you’re gonna think I’m totally weird but I only wear strapless bras. I’m a big girl (Victoria’s Secret ddd) but straps never ever stay up for me! I get so tired of grabbing them back up I gave up! I was told if a bra fits correctly the straps shouldn’t be there for support. I wear a camisole under every shirt I wear unless I’m going to bed, too. Wow! Didn’t realize how prudish I am! But I do have a few leopard print ;)

    • S says...

You can get straps altered. If you go to a speciality bra store they will size you correctly and choose the best fit. Tailors will also shorten straps (also speciality stores). Have the same problem but you’re probably not getting the best support with no straps.

  21. Jo says...

I need to buy more bras after reading this! I’m American, 33 yrs old, and was actually raised with instruction from my mother to never let my bra or straps show. ..and as a result I now only wear nude or black… Perhaps we were more conservative in the South, but I never really thought much about it until now. It sounds so daring and freeing to actually intend for it to be seen!!

  22. mbg says...

I have never comented before but today I feel like it. I own bras in every color except in nude! As you say, I feel like bras are part of the outfit, and from what I see around me, women around me agree altough I have never asked. :)

  23. Jen says...

Hello from the uk! I have a few pretty white and black bras & then a practical nude bra. I tend to just wear the white or black though. I like pretty bra’s(that are comfortable) rather than ones that are just boring and practical.

  24. kim says...

40-year- old American here. Until this post, I really only thought of my bra as being totally functional; something that needs to be worn. I don’t like shopping for bras because they’re so expensive and hard to fit perfectly. I’ve spent my whole life hiding my bra straps by pinning them to my tank style tops. I’ve been known to change my whole outfit because I could see my bra through my top. This is so weird to contemplate because I’m not at all prude. I guess it really is a culturally ingrained thing!

  25. Sarah Jane says...

I love white bras. Like Claudia, I’m also fascinated by the practicality of these comments! So many of you owning such a small supply, when I’m a lingerie magpie (small chest so fit not as live/die), grabbing all the pretty things that speak to my given mood.

    Love the conversation!

  26. Lilly says...

Don’t tell me, you only have black and nude bras???
No sexy stuff? no bold colours? I would die without my huge bra drawer full of spring, summer and winter colours… btw I don’t have nude coloured bras, only white ones, am German.
Try something new, just for yourself, unbelievable how sexy one feels wearing some sexy lingerie…

  27. kendra says...

I’ve recently become more adventurous with my bra showing. I used to wear a tank top or something if i knew it would show.
But I started making it more of my outfit. I bought some with the extra straps over the cups and other decorative elements. I have a few tops that I recently bought that are slightly sheer. When the light hits it right, you can see my bra under it and it feels sexy, but in a subtle way. I love it.

  28. Megan says...

I’m American and I pretty much only wear nude bras when I’m in a professional situation and afraid of being taken less seriously if someone catches a glimpse of a (gasp!) colored bra or strap. People make jokes about academics being dead from the waist down, but I guess as far as women’s underwear is concerned, we should be dead from the neck down :/

  29. Carly S says...

From America here. I love showing my bra through my shirts and when I do it definitely has to be a cute one- pink, floral, black, anything but nude. I always thought that was just me thinking my nude bras showing through my shirt looked dingy and not sexy at all. I’m so fascinated from all these comments. Who knew? I might even buy a lacy white bra now. I definitely think a nude bra is essential for being work appropriate. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t own a nude bra at all. All you European ladies, do you let your bras show through at work?

    • Well it depends on the kind of work you do. I used to work for a university and I was in constant contact with either student or University officials so no. I’m becoming a high school teacher so an even bigger no but I suppose that doesn’t apply for every type of work just most of them. Now I don’t mind my bra showing outside of work and far from my high school students, I really didn’t care about the university students on campus outside of the office though ^^

  30. South African here. I think skin tone makes such a difference, if you surveyed South African women it would vary dramatically because we come in so many different skin colours :) for white girls, nude works best under white, but black or cream or white works better for other skin tones! We are a conservative country, and most of us were taught your bra should not stick out but be UNDERwear. Not a part of your outfit. So I mostly have black and nude too!

    • I’m black American and nude just doesn’t seem to look right. But I wear bright color bras. Mine is electric blue atm. I love black bras and I’m more worried about finding one that is under $50 because of my size then there color. But I will say this I won’t buy a nude one lol. And I’d rather have white it again I just rather not.

  31. Maria says...

Yep – I live in Europe (Denmark) and I wear white bras. And black ones. I owned a nude one once, but I didn’t feel comfortable in it.

  32. Wearing a white bra right now and totally feeling proud! Ha!

  33. Niki says...

I’m Greek and I’m pretty sure I’ve never owned a nude bra. Too dull for my taste I’m afraid. Although I’m not a fan of white either, I will wear it if I’m wearing an all white top. I tend to buy bras in dark colours and I don’t mind at all if they sometimes show. I would mind if I wore nude and it showed though, I find the colour (or lack thereof) ghastly.

  34. Hi! I’m belgo-american and I live in Belgium. I guess I stand more on the American side of the balance because I only own 4 bras. 2 black (1 lacy, 1 plain), 1 nude and 1 bright emerald green (because it’s beautiful even under a slightly see through top). They all come from Uniqlo with no underwire; they are amazing: great support and great comfort which is important to me as I’m a mom but they actually look good. I actually tried white bras in the past but they are way too obvious for me (of course being of afro-american descent the contrast is really high :p) I’ll try a soft color as Nicoletta suggested, the nude being a less than flattering color once clothes removed especially on my caramel skin (it looks like a bandaid)

  35. Nelly says...

Hello : i’m french and i lust admit i don.t own any nude bra… I have 12 bras, most of them are blacks ( Chantelle ) some are grey, white (3) or corals… I wear them under my skirts and people can only guess them but not see them (the difference is subtle, i know…). Only 2 are comfy ones for my lazy sundays or when i need to move a lot, on a trip for exemple. I take care for them and keep them for years.

  36. lauren says...

I’m super confused- how is a white bra under a white shirt different to a nude bra? Wouldn’t it blend better than nude?

    • Actually no :) Try it, it’s amazing how a white bra becomes obvious under a slightly see through white shirt

  37. These comments are feeling like quite a linguistics/vocab lesson too! Someone doesn’t wear “pants” if the outfit requires it?!? Oh right, “pants” refers to a different article of clothing across the pond. And vests vs. singlets vs. tank tops!

I have a black bra and a nude bra, but I was choosing expensive bras to have converted into nursing bras at Nordstrom, so I felt pressure to make wise choices. Truthfully, I only ever wear the black one, mostly because I like the fit better (so much for my wise choice!). I also like that it feels a little intentional… like I’m ok if you see my bra, it’s not an old lady frumpy thing (even though I’m obviously a mom…).

I’m curious about the commenters who have many many bras. Are they all relatively inexpensive? I’m definitely in a busty part of my life right now, but a supportive, not-pokey bra can be quite an investment, so having a dozen or so is really out of the question for me.

    • Luna GC says...

I feel the climate here (Aus) requires more than a few bras. In Queensland, it’s humid and hot 3/4 seasons. I must change bras everyday or the sweat will cause (for me) skin issues & I’m quite sensitive. Luckily I was handed 4 bras which are my ‘cheeky’ bras by a woman who could no longer fit them, whilst I had a recent weight loss… still in almost new condition, bargain!

  38. Caroline says...

Stepping away from neutral colors, my “on rotation” bra is actually a bright red middle snap closure- because it’s the comfiest. It just happens to be red, but if it were any other color (even nude) I’d wear it all the time. Comfort triumphs color!!

  39. ACP says...

Ok, that underwear solution is brilliant (just seeing it!). Although I’m moving towards owning mostly hanky panky thongs to prevent me from always reaching for the granny panties. …But sometimes you need full coverage, haha. I think I’ve posted before about how I too own and love that Calvin Klein bra. I love the way Free People girls wear their bras – and Carrie Bradshaw knew how to make a bra part of the ensemble !!!!!!! – but it always feels too young when I try it.

  40. Brazil here.

I love these tule bras from Verve. They are my favorites for everyday.

If you want a sexy nude bra, i’d recomend these:

    http://www.verve.com.br/aro-classico-tule/p

They are made of tule with no lining inside. (With or without wires). They have the same tule bras with print or different colors.

And they have panties to match.

I also noted how americans have so few bras while brazilians and europeans have many.

  41. Carrie says...

In NZ it is quite on trend to show off your bras, especially on the side via a slightly gapey singlet/vest sleeve. I have bras in black, white, grey marle, navy blue and even floral fabrics. I love to wear my red American Apparel wireless bra under a white singlet (do you call it a vest??)
    But please no under wires!!

  42. I have two black and one nude bra. But really, truly, I’d love to never wear a bra again. I hate them. I recently realized that the only reason I wear one is really for other people. As in, it would look bad not to. Quite strange, really. Why should we care? Free the twins!! :)

    • Christine says...

I stopped wearing a bra about a year ago. At first I felt weird and self conscious about it like everyone one knew and I was doing something wrong. Eventually I realized that I don’t think most people don’t notice or care and if someone does that is their problem. I never plan on going back. It is pretty wonderful, and comfortable.

    • E says...

Be happy! Some of us have to and are very uncomfortable without one- even at home.

  43. Sophie says...

English here and I would wear a white bra under a white top. I don’t have nude, but I do have cream. Also, purple, black, pink, pale green and blue. My underwear now is pretty rather than sexy.

  44. Luna GC says...

Polynesian living in Australia, and I have bras in black, white, nude and a few cheeky bras in various colours with patterns/prints. With white bras – I have a few and wash them with my white V-neck tees which I love over jeans. Black bras are for my black outfits, when I’m feeling bad-ass. Nude bras I wear for exercise or at home. I don’t think they’re for old women as I’ve never seen any buy them! The cheeky bras are for the bedroom or when I’m with my Partner (and he knows they’re on). I do feel a boost of empowerment when I wear my cheeky bras but in general, I don’t like seeing bras showing (tacky to me). Thanks to you Ladies on this post I’m going to try a red bra under white top and bralettes (now they’re in adult women’s sizes).

  45. Gabi says...

I’m Brazilian and have countless bras, varied in shapes and colors. I always try to match them both to my panties and my outfit so they don’t scream out if accidentally shown. After my daughter was born, my family and I went on a 2-week beach vacation to which I only took black and white bras and panties thinking OMG I’m packing so light now that I’m a mom. This is so funny…

  46. Kim says...

I’m Dutch, nude is kinda a no go for me. White and black are for sure the most basic colors here. Also when I was younger I used to have lots of bra’s. Now I have between 2-3 favorites!

  47. Małgorzata says...

I am Polish. I have never worn nude bra, always coloured. White, definetly under white clothes. Go braless also, especially in summer :)

  48. Julie says...

I’m European and I do own one white bra (also: black, blue, red,…no nude), but I don’t feel I wear the white bra or any of the others I own to ‘showcase my whole outfit’. I like my bras not to be seen. I’m actually very bad at underwear in general (nothing fancy, no matching panties and bras,…) but I guess being pregnant, breastfeeding and being pregnant again during the past 3 years and the ever changing breastsizes that come with it, is the main reason why I don’t invest in underwear at the moment.

  49. Rachel says...

What about large breasted women? I’m not sure I want more attention drawn to my already oversized boobs. What would you say to yourself if you saw me wearing white under a white tee?

Plus they don’t make fun colors in the comfortable styles I wear. Boo.

    • Lacey says...

Rachel- this is my life too. I guess we just need to own it : )

    • Lexi says...

Check out brands like Panache, Elomi and Fantasie!

  50. Eszter says...

There is an other European here :-)
My regular bras are white, grey, nude and black + for special occasions/dresses I’ve got brown, green, black, cream, pink (not the neon one). As somebody’s wrote it before I also have sporty and lacy version from almost every colour..

I was really a big fan of bras in my twenties but lately I do not wear so much them… Make me feel more free :-)

  51. I have three white bras and four nude bras. A hot pink bra, a bright blue bra and a couple of lacy bras. I wear them only when I’m outside of my home. In the privacy of my home the bra gets stashed in the drawer.

I also like my panties to match my bras.

  52. joe says...

for me and for my friends nude is for old ladies!!
    i have 2 black 2 white 1 rose and 1 red
    simple and fun

  53. Yes, all the time, they are great and I find they add a level of cuteness and sexiness at the same time to your outfit. In summer, I also wear a halter top bra combined with a wide neck T-shirt and shorts or jeans, cute and sexy :D!

  54. This is such a great discussion.
I’ve always loved wearing black or white bras (recently also bought plain white cotton undies for the first time in years and LOVE them. Not to mention so does my boyfriend!) but have found when wearing a colour I feel super sexy. And that’s from someone who feels most comfortable in a mostly black wardrobe. Definitely all about the white under a white T. I’m from Australia, by the way, but a native German. X

  55. Isabel says...

36 years old half-French/half-portuguese here; I have to admit you made me check my underware drawer with this post :) Two whites and two nudes, mostly for summer; everything else is pretty colourfull but no black… I choose what to wear according to my mood and panties are always assorted, life is too short to wear boring underware!

  56. shopgirl says...

Oh, yes! White bra under a white blouse or simple white T-shirt is for me one of the most beautiful, clean and fresh styles ever….

    another european reader.. :-)

  57. PS I would rather go braless than showing a plastic transparent strap. I find these so cheesy and awful. I actually do sometimes go without a bra (and pants) if an outfit demands this.

  58. Nicoletta says...

I´m German living in Italy. And I´ve to admit: I don´t even own a nude bra. There are certainly outfits (e.g. sth. backless) which require invisible underwear. In this case I buy the bra/undies just for this particular dress/jumpsuit etc.
But ladies, don´t you like to get an extra portion of self-confidence? I swear you feel a lot better/sexier/valuable when having something nice, instead of something practical, underneath. We don´t do it for our partners, (of course they appreciate it as well), but for ourselves!
And a tip for all the nude wearing women here: try a soft pink under a white blouse/shirt. Same effect, but way nicer than the practical nude.
And if you´re wondering: I´ve about 18 bras. 15 nice ones for everyday and 3 for special outfits, like I talked before.
And remember, the underwear should fit like a second skin! Unfortunately most of us wear the wrong size when it comes to bras.

  59. I am really surprised at the number of bras most ladies here own. It seems 2-4 is the average. That really fascinates me. I own loads of bras in different colors and varieties. Some are lacy and more sexy, others are more “sporty” (practical and more plain) – yet they all are attractive. Most have straps, some don’t – some are balconettes, others are just little triangles (I have smallish boobs)

I just checked and can report that I own two white (one lacy, one more sporty), two black (one lacy, one more sporty), one cream (lacy), two nude (one lacy, one more sporty), three navy (two more sporty, one lacy), one light blue (sporty), one red (sporty), one grey (sporty), one green (lacy), two floral (lacy), one polka-dot (sporty) and one checked (sporty) bra. And a bright pink sports-bra. Makes 19 bras in total. I wash them after 1-2 times of wearing them and never wear one two days in a row. Some are only worn twice a year.

Under a black top I always wear a black bra. Under a navy top (I practically live in navy shirts, denim shirts or blue silk blouses) I wear a navy bra or a complimentary color (red, green). When wearing a white blouse I either wear a nude bra or the lacy, white bra. When I wear a colored Tee, I always wear a bra that withers matches or is a nice contrast when the strap shows…

    • Luna GC says...

Complimentary coloured bra! that’s new & sexy. Might try this.

  60. Virginia says...

I’m spanish. I’ve got black, white, red, blue…bras. Never nude. Neither my friends.

  61. Anne says...

    Hello
I am french and I wear white, black , blue, pink and very occasionally nude bras
For french girls, It’s not a problem to show your bra under your blouse
    or tee shirt …
    Love your blog

  62. Silje says...

I’m from Norway and I’ve always some white bras in my closet. One which is for show, that means some lace (but not meringue style). I wear it under semi see through T-shirts and tops. And another one, more simple for anything else. And of course some black bras of different types. Dark grey and burgundy underwear is also used. I have no nude bras and when I come to think of it there aren’t many around. Funny how bra culture is different!

  63. m says...

I have so many I could not even answer your question. I have many colours and styles, and I was very surprised to read that you only have a few?

  64. Alessandra says...

Italian here, I wear mostly black bras because most of my tops are black or navy, I have a few white ones to wear with lighter colors tops, but if I wear let’s say a white see-through shirt I hate that the bra shows because I find it ugly, so I wear nude.

  65. heija says...

Hey! Funny things these nude bras! I’ve heard of them for the first them, they look super weird, in fact very futuristic—is there no gravity in the future?? I go with black, even under white shirts and blouses; nothing to hide! I’m from Europe.

  66. Lenka Philippova says...

Interesting. I am an European and I wear mostly black and nude ones though in various shades of nude. I haven’t had a white bra for quite a long time and I don’t miss it, I am showcasing the black ones under white Ts, if in the mood to do so.

  67. Jane says...

Wow, reading these comments makes me realize I’m definitely in the low end of the Cup of Jo reader spectrum financially. I can’t believe how many bras so many of you have, picking them to go with your outfit! I just bought my first bra in 2 years and it’s my only bra (I can’t really afford more than one or two). I will keep it until the underwire starts stabbing me. For the past 2 years I had 2 bras that my sister gave me because she didn’t like them. When I do buy a bra, I buy nude because it goes with the most outfits. I realize my frugality is almost pathological, but I live within my means. Just wanted to share my perspective.

    • Sandy says...

Don’t worry Jane – you are not alone! And I think this will serve us well in the long run :)

    • amanda june says...

I also own just a few bras (all nude for the same reason as you), but really only one fits me properly, so I wear it all the time except when clothes require otherwise (others are strapless and racerback). So basically all the time. It’s not that sexy but oh so functional.

Incidentally, I have no interest in anyone noticing my bra as a fashion statement. I think it’s just not classy, “European” or no.

    • Sarah says...

Living within your means is awesome!! However, not all bras are super pricey! My guess is that if people are buying them to show/go with their outfit, then a $30 doesn’t seem so different from a $30 top!

  68. Can’t comment on color, but I just tried Gap’s wireless semi-padded bras for the first time and I swear I’ll never go back. So. Comfy :)

  69. Sarah says...

I’m American, 34, and just the same as Jo, I have two black and two “nude” (close to my skin tone, anyway). When I was in my teens I wore white bras but I found that beside showing through clothes, they also just show dirt too easily! At some point they just never look clean anymore. I have big boobs and bras wear out more quickly for us larger-chested ladies, so I can’t abide the thought of throwing another factor into the mix that might make me toss a bra out (such as stains). I felt self-conscious buying nude bras at first since I thought they were “old” and unsexy but I’ve actually embraced them and have several I think are quite pretty now! I’m straight and some men might find underwear interesting but usually … well I just think most men wouldn’t be able to tell you much about the bra a woman was wearing, haha ;)

As far as showing my bra through my shirt, I will just quote the wise sage Amy Poehler and say, “Good for her, not for me!”

  70. Katherina says...

Really only 4 bras? How practical? I have tons, but a lot of them are just to show only in the bedroom because they are cute but so impractical and noticeable under clothing…

  71. Rocio Ramos says...

I am spanish and i love white bras. I dont like nudes at all. It’s sexy To suggest! Love your blog, Joanna 💙

  72. Bel says...

No nude underwear, never! I feel so old with them on hahah I’ll keep them for my 80’s

  73. even if it were accepted, i don’t like the look of a white bra! love black and nude, and i embrace showing them off if i’m wearing a looser top with something lacey and fun. i definitely don’t think that black and nude have to be boring

I was taught from a young age to dress modestly. I also have large breasts for my body size so I wear nude lightly padded bras almost everyday – especially at work – so I don’t feel so uncomfortable. But when I’m out with my husband and I want to look sexier, I’ll go for a bra that isn’t padded. You can’t see the bra color, but you can see more than usual…

  75. Rosa says...

I wear a white lace bra. My bras are black, white and red all them from Freya. I’m from Barcelona by the way.

  76. Lucie says...

I’m English and I wear all different colours! I’m currently nursing my second baby and my feeding bras are nude, white and different shades of pink! I love to wear coloured lingerie.

  77. Fern says...

I’m Canadian and I wear apricot, seafoam green, black, and white, and they are usually part of my outfit, whether it’s just the straps showing or as an underlying colour — like the apricot straps visible with a gray slip and a peach dress or underneath a pink, blue, peach and white linen shirt so it’s visible!

  78. ich says...

I´m Spanish and curiously I don´t have any white bra!! I have two nude bras that I wear with white t-shirts and shirts. The others I have are coloured, black, grey, burgundy, violet, pink, green,… and also printed, striped, flowered, etc. Now, I´m realizing that I have plenty of them, I like to combine them with my outfit.

  79. Heather says...

This is really interesting! I’m Canadian and a nude and black girl, as well, although I’m not at all conservative and have no issues seeing a bra. I really don’t think that my bra choice dictates that much about my personality. It’s usually what I layer on over it that shows how I feel that day. I do have say that I just bought an off the shoulder top and realized that I no longer have a strapless bra (gasp), so I’m wearing my strapless blue tie dye bikini under it today!!! Whatever works!

  80. Alison says...

I wear white…but I also wear a cami almost every day.
So, it doesn’t really matter what color my bra is.

    • Luna GC says...

I didn’t know a cami could be worn over a bra, I’d always thought it was sleepwear, oops.

  81. h a says...

This is interesting!! I wear bras every color under the sun, but don’t really prefer to let them show! My tops are usually more opaque, or i have a cardigan on… Thing is, it never occurred to me that nude bras were the norm because they wouldn’t show, because they sure show against my brown skin tone. Guess there’s the skin tone issue again!

    • Elizabeth says...

Back in high school my (Caucasian) friend swore you were supposed to wear black underwear under white pants, I told her she was crazy, “you wear nude”. I asked her who gave her the idea she had to wear black underwear under white pants. She got all quiet; turns out the sales woman who told her that was African American. It all started to make sense. Skin tone definitely plays a role if you are trying to disguise your undergarments, its not a one color fits all scenario. :)

    • Luna GC says...

I’m going to try the Red bra under White top tip! I have dark brown skin and even ‘Nude’ bras show through my White tops.

  82. Mara says...

Mid-Atlantic USA here. I grew up in a conservative house — my role model mother essentially taught me to hide my body (boxy/billowy clothing, grandma bras, earth tone colors, etc). Therefore, I can’t fathom wearing bras that can be seen through clothing. One time when I was 13 my white (!!) training bra strap was showing on my shoulder, and my dad was like, “Your, umm ahhh, t-shirt is showing…”

So, I have two bras on regular rotation: nude and light gray cotton (my poor fiance!). Every time I travel abroad I marvel at the “gall” women have to wear anything but a nude bra under a white top. I wish I had the nerve! It’s never too late. Next stop: buying a white lacy bra!!

    • Natalie says...

Dude, do it!! You will feel so good and your fiance will love it.

I grew up in a conservative home too, and it was nearly torturous in my teenage years and when I started to get into fashion that my mom would buy all my jeans 3-4 sizes too big and throw away any clothing she deemed inappropriate when it came through the wash! It was such a huge stresser on our relationship. I wish she’d taught me more about confidence, rather than just trying to hide my body and pretend that sex didn’t exist… anyways! Sorry for the rant there..

I have probably 10 or so bras total including sports bras and special barely-there ones for at home, but of the ones I wear everyday I rotate through 3. One black, one white, and one nude. I go back and forth on the letting your bra show idea. I think it can be done well, but it’s very easily to slip into tacky territory.

Thanks for the article, Jo! I always learn so much by reading the comments on your blog, and it’s to your credit that you facilitate such fun conversations between women.

  83. Char says...

I used to be a demure girl, Kiwi living in the UK and had black or nude bras. But a few years ago I bought a willow green Rosie for Autograph bra and now, I own quite a lot from the range. They’re such pretty designs and have lovely straps I don’t mind if they peek out (modestly of course!). Very flattering vintage inspired range. I don’t work for M&S… But I think they do deliver internationally… http://www.marksandspencer.com/l/lingerie/rosie-for-autograph-lingerie

  84. Sara says...

I would have to respectfully disagree with this post and many of the commenters. I hate to sound so puritanical and American, you know, but in no way do I see one’s bra as part of their outfit. It is underwear! And personally, if I knew that my bra was showing through my shirt, not only would it make ME uncomfortable, but I think it would make others around me–men, in particular– uncomfortable as well. When I’m interacting with anyone on a day-to-day basis, be it a cashier, friend, acquaintance, whomever, I want them to see ME– and not be distracted by my bra!

For the record, I am not a grandma; I am twenty-four years old, very liberal, and I happen to love fashion and feeling sexy. But I can feel sexy in my nude bras, thank you very much. I live in very warm place, and wear a lot of white, so nude bras are practically all I own.

    • Kelly says...

It bothers me that women feel showing their bras make men so uncomfortable. If some man is so terribly distracted by a strap that has slipped out, that is his issue and not mine.

    • Mia says...

      Definately agree with Kelly!
In my opinion, all women should wear what THEY feel is comfortable, and not dress according to something that others might feel or think. And seriously, it’s just a bra! Can’t really see how anyone should get distracted by it – hiding it or not.
I think it is really unfair to generalize that men in particular would have a problem with seeing a bra strap..

Personally, I wear bras in all kinds of colors!

    • Colleen says...

I’m totally with you! I would be self-conscious all day long.

  85. Most of my supportive bras are black but I often where (especially in the summer) bright colored bralettes. They are always showing and I have no problem with it.

  86. Heather says...

Different approaches depending on where I am. For work, my bras are mostly functional. For social times, I do like a peek of lacy bra, and I do have a white bra, with lace, that gives me a more retro 50’s silhouette in a sweater or tighter top.

  87. Linda says...

Wow, this is an education!! I had no idea women had such strong opinions on bra colors!!

  88. Roxana says...

I love these kinds of conversations!

Nude bras all the way, all day.

Occasionally, a black one, or commando.

I think it’s tacky for your undergarments to be showing; bra or panties (incidentally, I really dislike the word “panties. . . ” as well as “slacks,” but I digress). I think it’s better to go without than to show it.

I think it’s demure, and therefore sexier, to keep these things hidden. Let ’em wonder “What is under there??”

That said, there are a few “looks” that I get; e.g. the pretty lace bra peeking-out from under a deep v-neck or from under the arm. If you are wearing something that goes low enough in front or on the side, then it’s actually tacky to be showing a nude/functional bra. It just looks like you don’t know how your clothes should fit. If it’s low enough that a normal undergarment would be visible, then you need to show a pretty bra. Personally, I wouldn’t wear the aforementioned “look,” but I understand/appreciate it.

    I’m a first-generation American.

    • Natalie says...

Yes! I agree with you on all points. Have always hated the word panties.

  89. Susanne says...

In my life, I have owned exactly 0 nude bras — I wear only white or black bras and panties. I’m from a Nordic country and I have no idea what the norm is for everyone else, but this has just always been natural for me. I love the way the white of the bra shines through a white shirt. (I do own a couple nude camis, though, for those occasions that I need to look more demure)

  90. Joanna says...

Also European and with no objection in any color. It depends on the design and style. I prefer bras showing under a shirt than straps showing when wearing a sleeveless Tshirt.

  91. Kelly says...

American here. I personally think a visible, gorgeous bra (regardless of color) is a fresh look. It is so feminine and sexy to see a little bit of lace or color peeping out or underneath from casual oversized tee/tank/dress. I do this quite frequently and love easy bralettes, even though I’m a 32C/D (fluctuates depending on “period boobs”). However, I don’t think it is look that pairs well in formal or professional dress situations. Even working in a casual office environment, I save this look for weekends and time off. Though I find it unfortunate that America has a stiffer attitude towards visible lingerie. If it is pretty and you love it, why not show off!?

PS-I love blush/light pink colored lingerie as a nude alternative under white clothing :)

  92. I’m curious about how people feel about the idea of no bra at all. I think it’s perfectly fine on other women: beautiful and sexy, but it always makes me a little self-conscious. Would be curious to read other people’s thoughts.
In terms of bras….. colors and lace are my go-to (German too).

    • Kelly says...

I love the physical feeling of not wearing a bra but unfortunately, there is a stigma in the states when going braless :( it is seen as “hippie”, “trashy” or “slutty” most of the time. We have issues with nipples here

    • Roxana says...

I like the no-bra look and agree that it’s beautiful and sexy in a natural way. You’re a woman, you have boobs.

That said, if my boobs were perkier, I’d go braless a lot more. My poor girls are pretty saggy after nursing on and off for 3 1/2 years. I rarely go without a bra (outside the home, that is, otherwise, I’m all about commando/nudity).

  93. Michaela says...

I am German and have mostly black lacy bras. BUT there is also a white and nude bra. The white I will wear in my free time with a white tee or summer-blouse as I am a woman and want to show that.
At work ( i am in an engieering-company) I will wear the nude bra with pale-blue or white blouses because it doesn’t show. In work I don’t want to emphasize my womanhood to much as I want to be seen as a smart and respectable. But I also make sure, that the nude bra doesn’t peeks out! Because a nude bra is a very old-fashioned thing only frumpish woman with no sense of style would wear. :-)

    • Hahaha, YES, I so so so agree with all of what you said! Me too!

  94. meg says...

The only time I’ve worn a nude bra was when necessary with dresses for a specific occasion… like my wedding. If I’m wearing a shirt that is sheer or has eyelets or something I’ll wear a camisole. I guess that would be similar to the “body”, but I don’t want my underwear to be attached to my undershirt! When I was pregnant and then breastfeeding, I stopped wearing underwire bras and have pretty enthusiastically made the conversion to a life free of underwires, but do sometimes find it tough to find something that won’t reveal too much when I’m cold… I don’t want padding, but a little lining to smooth things out would be helpful! Does anyone have any suggestions?!

    • G says...

Try Cossabella’s “Never Say Never”, it’s fantastic and beautiful and underwire free!

    • D says...

      Gap wireless bras!

  95. b. says...

i’m of the black bra / under white shirt persuasion.

since wearing white is such a rare occurrence, adding a white bra would make me feel so on view, to be almost naked. rationally, i know this makes little sense, as a black bra would show through much more than white. but as long as i’m wearing some black – it’s that little bit of bolstering that makes wearing white not such an anxiety-inducing event. #weirdo

  96. i buy whatever color is on sale, and usually it’s the bold or patterned ones that are cheapest. i just make sure to wear a dark top when i wear those bras. but i do have an inventory of off white, nude and black.

when casual or wearing summer stuff, i don’t care if the straps are showing, or if the back is showing, it’s a common fact that women wear bras, being demure about it takes too much time and effort.

  97. Veronica says...

no white bras, but yes a bra always complement the outfit.

  98. This may be an embarrassing question to ask, but all I can think is: how do you keep a white bra clean?

I love the look of a white bra on tan skin but after a few wearings it starts to get quite… dingy. Do French women have a bra washing secret us American girls don’t know?

    • deee says...

Same as with any white garment, always wash white with white and rotate bras for hygiene reasons, that way your white bra gets washed and fresh before any yellow spots ruin it. At least that’s what I have been doing

    • cecile says...

Hi, I’m french and I have had white lacy bras all my life (I’m 52…). The secret to keep them white is to have many of them, change each day, and wash them by hand (or machine fragile program) using a special lingerie washing soap.

      Cecile, Paris,

  99. deee says...

For a long time I used to buy cute underwear and keep them in the drawer for “special occasions”.
But life is too short for ugly bras and cheap wine, bring it on and own it in all its colorful beauty, I say ;)

  100. Cecile says...

I am French and have been living in the US for 18 years.
I wear black, white and nude bras (only since I am in the US for the nude ones). I also wear colored ones (blue, pink…) if I feel young&playful, am in my pjs and need support for breakfast, or all the other ones have to be washed!
A beautiful white bra under a white shirt is delightful. Especially if the shirt offers a peak on the lace (if there is any). Or a beautiful black bra peaking from a black (or white if you like it) shirt.
It is sexy to see the straps in some cases too. (under a sweater that shows a bit of your shoulder).

Transparent straps is a no-no for me. It is not transparent, it looks like plastic.

  101. Sarah says...

I’m a Brit, and mostly wear black and nude bras. I don’t want my bras on show.

    • Laura C says...

I agree- I have white bras too but I prefer not to show them.
Nude bras under white tees and black/white bras every day.
And, for God’s sake, NO transparent straps!!! I’d rather go “commando”, you know what I mean!!
      Xoxo

  102. Sus says...

I am German and I have about every color but not a nude one. Would feel funny and old style to me, not very flattering. Mostly I wear white (which I love) and black.

  103. pluminette says...

    Hello, i’m french :)
First, let me tell you how much I love your blog.

I wear dark blue, black, white, red bras. Nude sounds very “old” to me.
What should we hide our bras ? they are beautiful and sometimes even more expensive than our outfit (even though the price is not a guarantee of quality..).
If I don’t want my top to be transparent, I wear a “body” under it (like this one in kaki color: http://www.aufeminin.com/mode-femme-et-moi/mode-pas-cher-petits-prix-d15398c227731.html )

  104. Rora says...

My issue with straps is that on top of jewelry, clothing, glasses (sometimes) etc., I feel like the straps complicate my outfit and keep it from looking “put together.” But, I like the look on others!

  105. Lauren E. says...

I’m sure this is a personal preference, but I HATE the look of a white bra showing through a white shirt. The only time I like my lingerie to be visible is when I’m wearing a sleeveless T that hangs low under the arms and I’ll wear a lacy bralette that is meant to be shown.

    • Maria says...

Thank you! I was reading through the comments and thinking ‘I can’t believe it’s just me!’ Brazilian living in the UK here, black, gray and nude all the way. I do own a few colourful ones for weekends and holidays, but these are like those special dresses or shoes or clutches we only ever wear on special occasions. Nude bras suit me though, maybe it’s my skin tone or a personal preference, but I always liked the look of it.

  106. Giulia says...

Italian living in Belgium, and I agree with some of the comments above -nude is for grandmas. I’d also like to add that TRANSPARENT STRAPS ARE EVIL and there’s a special place in hell for those who wear them -guys, they are not REALLY transparent.

Also agree with the girl who mentioned bras (bralettes, really) lightly showing from under V necks, in the style of Audrey Lombard. https://www.instagram.com/p/BBpPtPoEzoK/?taken-by=audreylombard

  107. shivani says...

British here. I don’t wear white. I went through a phase in my 20s where I wore all the colours. But now I wear only black and nude. Like some other commenters, deliberately visible underwear is, I think, a little tacky. I also only wear knickers in those two colours – so always have a matching set :)

  108. Klara says...

I’m from Belgium and I have every color, except for nude! :o) White is beautiful when you’ve got a sun tan. Also, a trick I learned from a nurse: if for some reason you DON’T want your bra to show under a white (or other light fabric) shirt, you should wear a red bra… and it works!

    • stefanie farquharson says...

I think I have to try this!

    • Inge says...

Also from Belgium, I agree with the red bra, it works! My philosophy: life is too short to wear only black, white or nude bras (or black & white clothes foe that matter). I only buy coloured under- and upperware: beautiful aubergine, reds, purples, blues… And I just don’t buy white t-shirts, problem solved ;-)

  109. Dee says...

Not sure about the bra thing, but I’m a Brit and when I was in SF recently I really noticed how much higher tops and tees are cut in the US. Even between different branches of the same store, like a GAP scoop neck in the UK would be skimming the top of your bra cup, in the US it is just below the collar bone, I was surprised!

  110. Kelley says...

I do! I have a black, a nude and a white bra. And a black and white polka dot one. I love wearing the nude one or the polka dot one under sheer button down blouses and either jeans or skirts in the warm weather. Its sensual without being overt. I lived in Italy many years ago and while shopping with an Italian friend of mine, I realized that the things I thought weren’t acceptable were just cultural. Granted, there are some places I might not do this, such as the small southern town where I grew up, but I live in the Northeast now, and it feels more acceptable.

  111. Heather D says...

My lingerie is for my husband, period. Nude, white, black, pink, blue, whatever… he’s the only one who gets to see. =)

    • molly says...

      Amen! xo

  112. Peggy Sue says...

    I’m a Portuguese reader :-)
I only wear black or nude bras, I hate white underwear (mind you, I mostly wear black and some grey, navy, white, nude tones).
But I see a lot of Portuguese women wearing white bras underneath their white shirts and blouses. I think they believe white lingerie goes with white clothes (also valid for white trousers/white knickers) and that no one can see it, when you obviously can, like Alessandra mentioned in her comment. You see a lot of service attendants doing this, so maybe since they have to wear their white uniform blouse everyday they just wear whatever bra they have.

I don’t believe it’s an American/European thing. I’ve seen several American celebrities rocking the white tank/colourful bra trend.

  113. No white bras. Red, black, nude (for my skin color), and a few patterns ;)

  114. Donnia says...

French girl speaking: definitely have (more than 1) white bra. That’s a staple in my lingerie drawer. Interrestingly, my mother’s approach to wearing lingerie is very different to the one I discovered when I moved to the US. She wears very elaborate, lacey lingerie and to her it’s just part of the outfit. It’s been a staple birthday or Christmas present from my Dad ever since I was a kid. If what she’s wearing is a little see-through, then the lingerie will show and it’s not a problem. Although she probably wouldn’t wear a black bra under a white shirt (if she did it would be on purpose as a fashion statement), it’s not something to be hidden. Same goes if you can see some lace on her strap. She also has always been adamant about wearing matching ensembles. That’s the first thing she taught me when buying my first bras – think of it like matching socks if you will. At one point the rebellious teenager I was would only wear mismatched lingerie to annoy her (what a rebellion! she got over it haha). When I moved to conservative Michigan in high school, I discovered that bras that could be seen where the equivalent of blasphemy and that a bra strap was considered “gross” (it was the 2000s, spaghetti straps were the rage, at least in Europe, and I was very confused over what to do for a long time!).
Not sure if that’s a common French analysis, but here’s my 2 cents!

  115. Anita says...

I am German and don’t own a nude bra. My husband would probably be both shocked and be laughing out loud if I wore one, it’s considered tacky or to be worn by very old women here. Mine are black, grey, light blue (colors I usually wear anyhow) and white.

    • Sorry to contradict, but this is not true!
I am German, too, and I work in the fashion industry/fashion PR. I own two nude bras (one from Calvin Klein and one La Perla) and all woman I know here in Berlin and in my smaller hometown near Hamburg wear them.

  116. Alice says...

From this English girl- yes, absolutely!!! I only ever wear what most people would classify as “nice” underwear/ lingerie- that way, if someon does catch a peek (through a slightly sheer blouse/ if the strap slips off my shoulder/ etc) or if I’m caught off guard by a chap, then I know my underwear is decent. I also agree with the quote- my bra is absolutely part of my outfit, not just there for support!

  117. Jane B. says...

I have a black & white polka dot bra with some black lace that I LOVE. I also have a neon orange-y red one! Both are a small nob to myself to remind me “I’m smokin’ hot.” I have to say it makes me feel a wee bit sexy when the strap of either sneaks out of my sleeveless shirt or tank top ;-)

  118. Eva says...

from the book ‘how to be parisian’:
‘wear a black bra under your white blouse, like two notes on a sheet of music.’

  119. Anna says...

I’m from Germany and I only have black and nude bras :) maybe I’ll try a white one this summer

  120. CW says...

I always wear white bras – occasionally I’ll wear a black one.

  121. Since I started working from home, my bra situation has undergone a revolution. I love to wear a black lace bralette with a thin t-shirt.
    I feel free and sexy!

  122. Lori says...

Anyone here think it’s classier to dress modestly?

    • dee says...

One can look classy and really very modest without being scared of colorful, spaghetti bra straps lol. Playing with tiny details is a nice, youthful touch, methinks ;)

  123. Ella says...

Spanish here, and personally a nude bra might be necessary for some outfits, I think they are extremely ugly. And actually can anyone tell with what kind of dress/top would you need to wear a bra? If I am wearing say a camisole that is slightly see through, I would wear a sort of tank top underneath either black or white. No need for nude in my opinion.

  124. Carly says...

Chicagoan here and avid wearer of a colorful bra. Not bright neons but definitely never nude or white. I think a black lace contrasted with a white tee shirt is the ultimate cool girl look.

  125. Alex says...

Canadian here. Although would never wear a nude bra, I’ve sort of stuck to my tried and true black and grey cotton comfy sports bra for every day wear, and cart out the black lace bras when I know they will be seen. I am having a bit of crisis though since they’ve discontinued (gasp!) my bra, and I’ve been trying to find an equivalent without any luck. It’s strange how big a deal it’s become….like in a break-down-in-tears-in-the-dressing-room kinda way since I can’t find anything that comes close to the support and comfort I had with my old bra. Does anyone have any suggestions for a comfortable cotton bra (no underwiring) that still provides good support (I’m a 34D)???

    • Cindy says...

hi Alex! Third Love has a 24/7 Classic bra that is THE most comfortable bra I’ve ever worn (it is underwire though you seriously won’t be able to tell…) I am a 34DD and it has amazing support as well! They have push-up versions as well as the t-shirt and full coverage. I would highly recommend buying 1…or 2, or 3…LOL!
They even have an iPhone app that sizes you! Seriously cool!!!

      Good luck!!

  126. Maryline says...

Well, I m french and I only love black and nude bras! And i never really noticed this habit on my fellow french women….
Also, Jane Birkin pictured here is well known for her “no bra policy” ;-)

  127. Sasha says...

Can you recommend good bras for wearing when pregnant?
All the books recommend underwire-free (while all the stores, including maternity stores!) sell larger bras with underwire.

    • Kacey says...

Hotmilk! It’s the only brand I’ve found that is supportive and comfortable.

    • Anna says...

I’m pregnant and am currently wearing flexible wire bras, which I discovered at a maternity store in my first trimester! They didn’t have these when I was pregnant three years ago and always hated the lack of support from the bras I wore then. These ones are comfy and supportive — winning! Good luck with your pregnancy :) http://www.hotmilklingerie.com/pages/why-hotmilk-flexi-wire

    • Ana says...

Hi fellow pregnany lady! I don’t know what size you are, but I find that the Boob Fast Food T-shirt Bra gives enough support for my 34 E/F size. It’s not underwired. Good luck!

    • I found it really hard to find underwire breastfeeding bras. But then i’m in the UK. One of the best days of my life was finding an underwire breastfeeding bra – so much more flattering and comfortable. There is no reason to go underwire-free unless you want to. Here, a small shop which also sells on eBay is The Little Bra Shop – it sells a freya underwired breastfeeding bra which goes from small sizes up to very large sizes which is the most comfortable bra I have ever worn, and great for breastfeeding. I’m sure it’s sold elsewhere too. I have it in nude and black.

Hello from Belgium, we love color here! Nude is something for grandma’s. Under white shirts I’ll wear grey or pink bra’s. It is here very trendy to show the lace of your bra under a v-neck cashmere sweater. For instance from this very very trendy brand http://www.lovestoriesintimates.com/en/catalog/the-perfect-mismatch/, unfortunately only suitable for small boobies. X

I am French and I have been wearing nude bras for a long time but most of my French friends, in their 30’s, wear all kinds of colors, bright pink, taupe, black…
French women are not afraid of showing their bras, either under a transparent shirt, or at the shoulders through a loose top… I am not sure this is something that American women would do !

  130. I have a black and a nude bra, I haven’t had a white one since my teens, even though I am British :) European / British generalisations always make me laugh!

American girl here (ok, ok, I’m 33!) and I used to wear colorful bras as a preteen/teen but as I matured and became more fashion conscious I became aware that showing undergarments is typically received as a taky or low-class look in America (think: panty lines, “whale tale” etc). Usually revealing a bra/underwear is a sign of ill-fitting clothes or inattention to appearance and is more prone to look sloppy or haphazard. A carefully chosen bra/top could be well done, but all in all, it seems sort of tricky to pull off.

I am German and I can tell you that we have quite too many white bras. But not because the women want to show their bra, most of the time becauce they don’t want to show it! I met a lot of women who didn’t know that you need to wear a nude bra instead a white one if you want to ‘hide’ the bra. Most of the women think about nude bras that these are ugly solutions for old women.
I had my bra lesson in a lingerie store from a shop assistent. Since then I try to convince all my girl friends to try a nude bra.

  133. I suppose it also matters where you live, where i live its safer to dress demure :) But it would be great to look beautiful and show off all of your outfit.

Hi, I’m from eastern Europe..I don’t have nude lingerie…just black or white…the big thing here is the push up effect…the more the better…but lately I think it looks unnatural. What I would like to try for a change is some unpadded bras. But first things first…I’m in my third trimester now white my second baby.

    • Yes! I left my office job at the beginning of the year and haven’t worn a padded bra since! I have transitioned to lace bralettes and T-shirts and I feel more natural than I ever have!

I’m European and I wear mostly white bras just because I love to wear a lot of white, especially in the Summer.
But next to that I also have black and some colored ones, but no nude ;-)

  136. YES! I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t have a white bra :) I found it really strange to see you don’t have one! And usually we have more white bras, even with lace … We would wear it under white t-shirts, white blouses … This is so normal to us :) Greetings from Slovenia, Europe

  137. I wear black or grey, not nude (except for underwear) and I own one white bra to wear under white shirts. I have a drawer filled with colorful, lace and silk bras in all kinds of colors. I used to wear these in my 20s. They’re too pretty to get rid of, even though they’re too small to wear now. My daughters turned me on to Aerie bras a few years ago, and I love them.

  138. I do! I am Spanish and we wear white bras sometimes because it looks sexy when nyour blouse is kind of sheer and you can spot the lace of your underwear. It is a suble and elegant sexy touch!

In France, wearing a black or fourescent coloured bra under a white top is not at all frowned upon but the anglosaxon in me doesn’t dare try it! Going to a lingerie shop during the sales in France is also a very cultural experience – women will buy on average 8-10 new bras and 2-3 matching underwear sets for each. I’m all about British Marks and Spencer mix and match!

From the UK – white bra wearer! I think I’m still scarred from that part of Mrs Doubtfire where she shows her undergarments. All nude.

Portuguese here – we used to associate the nude bras with serious auntie/ grandma underwear; and only wear white or black bras. In the last years, with brands like calzedonia and intimissimi, the options became much wider, but always in a social context. If you want to be taken seriously in a work environment, you will not show up showing your bra. I think it is a non-written rule.

  142. Anna says...

As a european, I must say that we do have bolder aproach to wearing bras, nudes are much more popular in America, cotton basics too.

  143. Ana says...

European and a white bra wearer!

  144. Marig says...

European, french her. Not representing all of french of course.
Whatever the colour of my bra, I would never ever intentionally have the straps showing or choosing my clothes to showcase my undergarments. Well I do not know where you had this notion that european and french were all for the show off and no modesty! That said, I do not wear nude or beige (beigeasse, which means nude-y) bra although I have 2. I cannot enjoy wearing this no colour, it reminds me of the bras my mother and older generation was wearing. I do have several bras though, all colourfull, only one white plain cotton one. And some black. But mostly colours and some patterns, since I discover at last the Graal of bras in UK brands that cater a wide range of cups and back from very narrow to very large: this does not exist in France unfortunately so the choice is very narrow resulting to a lot (and I mean a lot) of women wearing the wrong size albeit colourfull bras. Anyway I do not wear a lot of white clothes and if so, I tend to prefer not sheer one. If I DO wear sheer silk blouse, for example, I always either a jacket or what you call a cami. So the colour of the bra does not matter. For women with “standard” sizes, Aubade is a very nice french brand or Simone Perele. Not cheap though but bras should not be cheap unless you would not respect the support your body needs. Italian brand La Perla (not cheap at all this one) is a must and very beautiful but beware of the sizing which can be confusing.

  145. Barbara says...

Yes; I do wear white bras, and sometimes even black ones under white shirts ;-)

    Barbara, from France

I am French and like a good nude bra (you really don’t want your boss to enjoy your WHOLE outfit. Haha.) I also really like bold colored bras… totally inspired by Carrie Bradshaw who is so so American to me! I actually thought this was a thing in NYC ;-)

I am from Spain and Iove to show my lace bras under my shirts and blouses. Bras must be part of our clothing and I think it is sexy and even elegant to show at least part of our beautiful underwear.
