We’re Hiring!

Cup of Jo is hiring an editor and writer

After two wonderful years, our beloved Caroline is leaving her editor job at Cup of Jo to focus on personal projects, including writing books. We’re excited for her but sad for ourselves. She was my first hire at Cup of Jo, and she has been fantastic to work with through the years. She has written epic posts on things like heartbreak, living alone and all things beauty. She’ll be missed! Thankfully, she’ll still be working full-time for the next month or so, and will contribute regularly to the blog after that.

The good news is: We’re looking for a great writer/editor to join our team. This is a full-time position based in Brooklyn. Here are the details…

We’re thrilled to be bringing on an experienced writer/editor to help continue to grow Cup of Jo. I’m looking for someone hardworking and likeminded who is a fount of ideas and is excited about working on a small, dynamic team.

About the editor role:

* Full-time position based in our office in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

* Responsibilities include generating original ideas for posts and series; producing photo shoots and conducting interviews (like house tours and beauty uniforms); writing posts in the first- and third-person voice; scouting contributors/writers for longer-form essay posts (like this and this) and editing them; writing blurbs for posts and our weekly email; scouting products and producing round-up posts; helping with social media; and collaborating on all things editorial.

* Commitment of at least one year.

* Competitive salary.

About the ideal candidate:

* 5+ years of writer/editor experience, ideally for lifestyle magazines or websites.

* Avid reader of blogs and other media; explorer of all corners of the Internet.

* Able to generate all kinds of fresh and compelling ideas for posts and series in many different categories.

* Able to scout anything and everything, from beautiful homes to parents living around the world to unexpected products for gift guides to professional dog walkers to people with nutty collections to… anything.

* An innate sense of what really matters to people and what’s interesting.

* Knowledge of the online shopping world and a great sense of style for market work.

* Able to juggle tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines. Self-motivated and eager to take an idea or task and run with it.

* Curious, enthusiastic, efficient and solution oriented. Very organized with a strong attention to detail.

* Bonus: Experience with WordPress.

If you’re interested, please email: careers@cupofjo.com with a letter about yourself, a resume, links to your website/blog/Instagram/Pinterest/Twitter (if you have them), 5 ideas for posts that you’d like to write or produce for Cup of Jo, and 10 links that would fit well into a Cup of Jo Friday round-up.

We’ll be reviewing the applications over the next few weeks and will be in touch shortly. Thank you so much for your time and interest! Very much looking forward to hearing from you. xoxo

  1. Good luck, Caroline!

Jo, Do you have any part-time remote positions available? I work full time but would love to work with you and help develop content. I live in Philly. Thanks!

  2. Sam says...

Ohhhhh Caroline we will miss you! Best of luck with your next adventure xx

  3. I wish I wish this were a remote position! Love from a girl who loves to write and edit and blog. God’s blessings to you. — Bailey

  4. Brooke (Sad Animal Facts) says...

    Congratulations Caroline, you’ll be missed!

Thanks for making Cup of Jo such a great place! I forwarded Caroline’s essay on falling in love to every person I know, and my fiancé listens super-patiently to my almost-daily Cup of Jo updates (“There’s a new type of striped shirt I don’t have yet!!”)
    xx Brooke

  5. oh that’s so sad! i love her writing style and her voice, but i am so excited for what’s in store for the future with her and your new editor

    hammyta.wordpress.com

  6. Jo says...

Enjoyed her posts on being single! Though we’re different ages, I appreciated her perspective of creating a home for oneself, fashion & dating. Best wishes to you.

  7. Kimberly Evans says...

Jo, Are you accepting remote applications who live in say…. Connecticut?

  8. annie says...

Loved her posts always. I adore all things CoJ, but especially can relate to the younger, non-motherhood posts since that’s my demographic for now! She has a youthful, but wise voice. Best of luck :)

  9. Yeng says...

    Sad to hear Caroline is
leaving. I really admire her writing – witty, relatable, and warm. Her mattress post showed real skill. Wishing her all the best on her next adventure. Can’t wait to read her book!

  10. Margo says...

Best wishes to Caroline, she is terrific!

  11. For your new hire, I would be interested in the perspective of someone stylish, youthful and funny in her 40’s…a photographer with kids and a husband who works full time. There is something I can relate to ;) That would be amazing.

  12. Awe, sad to hear that Caroline is moving on but it must be exciting for her to go out on her own! I hope she’s still able to contribute to Cup of Jo every so often…I always love hearing her opinions.

  13. amy says...

I loved Caroline’s posts! Very sad she is leaving. This is my dream job — I’d love to apply but don’t think I would be as interesting, funny, stylish as Caroline (or Joanna!). I’ve been reading for years and honestly, the posts are my favorite part of the day!

  14. Lauren says...

Jo, would you consider having a weekly or monthly guest post? I’m thinking that this would be great way for inexperienced writers/journalists to gain some experience and exposure (I work for an employment service so am always thinking of ways for others to gain experience and a ‘foot in the door’ of their preferred work industry).

  15. arielle says...

I have loved this blog from the very start and have to admit, I was a bit wary when the editorial team expanded. That said, Caroline’s work has so touched me as a mid-20-something-Brooklynite to now a late-20-something-San Franciscan. Caroline, thank you for sharing honestly, with warmth, wit, and humor. I will miss your voice!

    With care and appreciation,
    Arielle

  16. Danielle R. says...

I wish Caroline the best of luck!! Loved her posts cause I relate very much to them (as far as dating, the blogs about being single, etc) and they are very well written. Maybe I’ll see some other work later.

  17. Katie says...

I really loved Caroline’s perspective (dating, being single, not having kids) and hope you find that balance in whoever you hire next to keep a more well-rounded perspective. I like that it makes the blog relate-able to both my “now” (not yet married) and my “future” (aspirational posts about motherhood).

  18. Elise says...

So sad to see Caroline go! I’ve loved reading her posts. But you always seem to hire fantastically, so I’m not too worried. Good luck, Caroline!

  19. How wonderful for Caroline! We’ve loved getting to know her, and I’m sure we’ll all be picking up her future work, too. :)

    Congrats!

    http://www.kathryndlewis.com

  20. Ella says...

Cannot wait to read your book Caroline! Hope you get on it asap ;)

  21. prudence says...

All the best Caroline!.. Joanna, After re-reading Caroline’s welcome post I wonder how close do you think cup of jo is to achieving the goals you set out or where hoping for in that post?…

  22. Sophie says...

Really, really hate to see Caroline go because I love her writing, but am looking forward to her first book! Best of luck to you, Caroline.

  23. Jo says...

I will miss you so, Caroline!

I’m so sad to see you go but can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. You are so talented and genuine (not to mention BEAUTIFUL, of course)! Please keep us posted through your personal blog.

    All the best to you!

  24. cora says...

Good luck in your future endeavors Caroline. I know wonderful things are in store for you. I look forward to seeing your guest posts. Jo, please hire someone exactly like her with the same spirit and charm, no easy feat I’m sure!

  25. Emily M. says...

This feels like that time last week when my friend told me she’s moving away. I’m happy for you on the outside but sad for me on the inside. I’ve truly enjoyed the flavor you’ve brought to Cup of Jo, Caroline– thank you. Please write often! (on the blog, obviously, I know we’re not actual friends…)

  26. Best of luck and the happiest wishes to Caroline on her next adventure. We will miss you!! Keep us updated on your next steps!

  27. Megan Dierckins says...

I love A Cup Of Jo and will miss Caroline! As a 30 year old who is married but does not have kids yet, I always felt like her pieces related directly to me! Best of luck and I can’t wait to see what you do!

  28. Theresa says...

Aw, bummer! Good luck to Caroline on her next professional adventure! When she gets engaged, she will have to write a guest post. :)

  29. claire says...

she will be greatly missed – she’ll be a tough act to follow

  30. Good luck, Caroline! I have adored reading your posts. I credit you with so many random giggles from my desk at work during lunch.

  31. Colleen says...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! I heart Caroline! Thank you for the beautiful writing and best of luck in your new ventures. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more from you in the future.

  32. No, not Caroline. :(
She is the best. Wishing her all the best!

  33. Julie says...

So sorry to see Caroline go. What a great writer! Hope you find someone amazing—and looking forward to Caroline’s book :)

  34. sarah w says...

LOVE CAROLINE AND HER INTELLIGENT, QUIRKY, WITTY SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!!!! Sign me up for the book she is writing. Can’t wait to read!!!!!

  35. Meggles says...

What a serious bummer. I love Caroline. She is so funny, interesting, and genuine. Great writer, too.

  36. N. Rogers says...

So sad to hear Caroline is leaving! I really enjoy reading her posts — especially the beauty product ones.

  37. Katie H. says...

Dream job! But I have no experience, no talent, nor do I live in Brooklyn… Sad to see Caroline go (Best of luck!), but we will be very excited to meet your new team member!

  38. Catherine says...

I wish! Good luck in the process.

  39. Olivia says...

I have loved Caroline’s posts over the years I’ve been reading! I’m unmarried, without kids, and I find Caroline’s posts very relatable, as she’s faced many of the same dating and life experiences I have (e.g. living alone, break ups, etc.) AND, they are always phenomenally written.

GOOD LUCK on your next endeavor Caroline!!!! Cup of Jo readers will miss you.

  40. Greta says...

Good luck, Caroline! You will do great in your new professional endeavour!

How I would love to come work with you guys! This would be a dream come true! My heart fits the requirements, my Resume doesn’t even come close – I’m a lawyer who lives in Belgium… A world away in every respect.

  41. Jamie says...

I will be sad to see Caroline go; I love her posts! I’m glad she’ll still be contributing. Good luck Caroline!

  42. Cath K says...

So sorry to see her go. I’m a reader from the UK and just love everything she posts. Good luck!

  43. If only I still lived in Cobble Hill! I lived there for a decade… And I actually AM a writer, albeit I do a different kind of writing for a living…

  44. Caroline, you will be missed! I look forward to reading your writing elsewhere—whether it’s online or on a bookshelf in Barnes & Noble. I wish I could apply for this position! Sadly, a move to Brooklyn from California isn’t in the cards for me right now.

  45. I wish I was in NYC!! If you ever decide to do anything long distance- I’d die happy. (Think about it!!! 👍🏻) I wrote you an email for writing advice about 7 years ago and you wrote me back a sweet, encouraging email.

Caroline’s writing is warm, funny and endearing. Good luck to her!

  46. Amy says...

Caroline, write a book and I will buy it! I promise. You were a great addition to Cup of Jo.

  47. Katie says...

Aw no! I’ll miss Caroline’s posts so much. She was a great addition to the blog. Best of luck to her, and to you in the hiring process!

  48. Laura C says...

Good luck Caroline, you will be missed. I guess that it have been such a hard decision to make.
    Go on Caroline!
    xoxo

  49. Caroline will be writing a book?! That’s great news to soften the blow she won’t be writing for Cup of Jo anymore… Sadly I’m from Belgium, otherwise I’d totally apply :)

  50. Best of luck Caroline, you’ll be missed! But having made the same decision a couple of months back, I understand your decision, and it’s a brave one. Keep us updated, I’d love to read your book!

  51. Really happy for her, bud indeed sad for her departure from cupofjo! Good luck!

  52. Stefanie says...

I loved Carolines Texts so much! I am definitly going to read her books. Hope that i won’t miss them – you have to present them once they are ready!

Also i would love to apply but i would have to move to the US and quit my Radio Job. Sigh.

Good luck everyone: to Carolines Future, to Joanna on finding a great author and to anybody else just because!

  53. Waaahhh, nooooooo!! That sucks out the wazoo. You’ll be so very missed, Caroline! Your writing is all kinds of wonderful, a joy to read. Stoked about your opportunities, though, and: writing books, yay! (Big-time yay!) Heartfelt congratulations. Aaaand it’s great to hear that you’ll continue to be a regular contributor at A Cup of Jo. Superb.

Jo, I’d be aaall over this role if I were in NYC…unless of course you decide you’d be happy to have someone working remotely, all the way from Down Under? Hee!

  54. Michaela says...

So excited for Caroline but sad to know she will be a less frequent voice on Cup of Jo, I love her writing. Good luck with finding another editor and looking forward to meeting them!

  55. Oh my goodness! Has it already been two years!? Wow, I remember writing my application for the position on New Years Eve back when you first posted it. Sad to see Caroline go, she’s a doll! All the best to her and her next adventures! xo Smiles from Kauai.

  56. Danielle says...

Good Luck Caroline! Looking forward to reading your future books :)

  57. Laura says...

Because of Caroline, I have discovered the best mascara and lipsticks! Wishing you the best of luck, and I can’t wait to read your books!

  58. Oooh I am happy for Caroline and her new adventures but I am sad because I loved reading all her posts on this wonderful blog. I am sure your next hire will be just as wonderful. If I lived in Brooklyn, I would be jumping at the chance to work with Cup of Jo!!!

  59. Penelope says...

Oh Caroline!! You’ll be missed! Good luck in the future, and know that you have devoted readers looking forward to your next endeavor. You’re going to kill it :)

  60. Caroline, you will be so missed! The voices on this blog are my favorite on the internet and I loved hearing your perseptive on so many things. Please come back often!!

And best of luck finding someone new, Caroline set the bar high!

  61. Ann says...

I’ve always enjoyed Caroline’s posts so much, best of luck to her.

  62. Mandy says...

Caroline! We’ll miss you!!! Very best wishes for all your adventures ahead!!!

  63. No! Caroline! We love you!

  64. Jeanne says...

Best of luck to you Caroline. Have always loved your writing and wish you a bright future.

Joanna, I’m hoping there’s a wonderful, qualified candidate that might be a little older. Some of your readers have high school aged and college aged children. The internet is rife with information for mothers of younger children but there are very few good bloggers addressing the older target market.

    • Traci Barr Segal says...

I was thinking the same today. I had my son at 35 and today he’s 17. At 52, I still feel that I am fit and stylish. I would enjoy reading about a variety of mom’s of different age groups.

    • Trish says...

Completely agree. The blog is skewed slightly to a younger age group (that of the founder and editors). Still one of my favourite blogs, but would like some Beauty, motherhood and lifestyle posts that are specific for women over 45-50.

    • Rosemary says...

I agree! Would love to see that!

    • Maud says...

You took the words right outta my mouth! I’m married, 48, no children, and, while I’m an avid reader and love this blog, I’d greatly appreciate more content for hip, post-40 women.

    • Sofia says...

      Same here!!

  65. Jen says...

When I read the headline I literally said, “Caroline better not be leaving!” Good luck to you!!

  66. Jill C says...

Oh no Caroline, you’ll be missed! It’s been so great getting to know your voice through this blog. Good luck with your next big thing!

  67. Liz says...

    My dream job!! <3

  68. Hope says...

Also v sad but I’m excited about the idea of Caroline writing a book. Best of luck Caroline!

  69. Courtney says...

No Caroline, don’t go!! But I will definitely read your book(s)!

  70. Greta says...

We’ll really miss you, Caroline! Best of luck on your next adventure!

  71. Amanda says...

It’s so sad to see Caroline go-her posts are wonderful!! But it’s exciting to move on to new things-best of luck, Caroline!

  72. I never comment, but I had to today. I broke up with my long term bf the same time Caroline did, and today, I became officially unemployed so I could start working on my own project/company (!!!). So I feel like Caroline is my freaky, adulthood experience soulmate.

Congrats Caroline! I’ve loved your writing here, and I’m so looking forward to seeing what you create. I will say, every moment of self-project-employment is an emotional swing from “YA! I’m doing this whole working on my own project” to “O god. Is this even a good idea? Shouldn’t I be working some stable tech job like everyone else making predictable money?!”

But as someone told me yesterday, “If you were to die tomorrow, you can go down knowing that you were doing what you REALLY wanted to do and that you lived your life by your own terms. How many people get to say that?”

  73. Cindy says...

I will miss Caroline’s voice. Good luck, Caroline!

  74. Will miss you Caroline. Let us know when you finish writing your first book, I will line up to get it! Best of luck

  75. Genevieve says...

You’ll be missed Caroline!! Your posts always brought a smile to my face!

  76. Oh no, reading this really feels like a loss :-(

  77. The job is really exciting! Unfortunately I live in Brazil!
Good luck, Caroline! I’ll miss you!

  78. Fernanda says...

I’ve been following the blog for a few years and I dont think I’ve written before, but Caroline, you will be missed. Your text on breakups is one of the finest writing I’ve ever read on the subject (and coming from the end of a long relationship you could only imagine how many it’s been).

Best of luck in your next projects, please keep us updated in case you have something new for us!

And to take the opportunity, Joanna, I admire so much your job and persona! My favourite blog by far.. even the texts on motherhood get to me.. even tough I am far from having babies myself!

    Xoxo

  79. Kate says...

OH NO! I will miss Caroline. Can’t wait to see what she does next!

  80. Melissa says...

Awww, sad!!! When Caroline started I was pretty dubious… worried a new voice would interrupt the flow of what I liked about Cup of Jo. But she fit in perfectly! Her voice WAS different, but it was a perfect compliment, and she added a lot to the team. Best of luck in your other projects, Caroline! We’ll miss you!

  81. So sad to see Caroline go, but what a dream job for someone new!

  82. Christie says...

Oh no! I’ve loved reading Caroline’s posts! Caroline, you are an amazing writer and I’m sure you’ll go on to do great things. I hope you will at least come back to do guest posts every so often, your voice will be hugely missed on this blog!

    All the best Caroline. Xoxo.

  83. So sad for us!! I love Caroline! But I know she will go on to do big and wonderful things, and I know the next writer you get for Cup of Jo will be fabulous. <3

  84. Olivia says...

I am pretty sure that I speak for everyone in saying that we will greatly miss your voice, Caroline. Best of luck to you in your adventures ahead!! Hurry up and write a book or something so we don’t have to go too long without hearing from you. :) And best of luck to you, Jo, in finding a new contributing voice — can’t wait to hear from whomever it is! I would apply if I could! XOX

  85. as someone who has gone through a couple heartbreaks while reading this blog, i’ve always enjoyed caroline’s pieces. i’m single and live alone and have really related to her experiences. i look forward to reading your future pieces.

  86. Megan says...

Good Luck Caroline…and I sooooo wish this position allowed for remote opportunity. If you ever need someone to represent you from the west coast…man I’d love it!

  87. Celeste says...

Good luck, Caroline!!! I can’t wait to read your books!

Joanna—I’m a huge fan of Cup of Jo (avid reader since 2007) with a journalism background. Would love to apply but I live in L.A. and own a home out here. Would you consider someone based in L.A.? Thanks so much!

  88. Amanda says...

I hope this means Caroline will start posting on her blog again. Ha

  89. Megan says...

I love Caroline – she’s an amazing writer – so sad to see her go.

  90. Aga says...

You shall be missed, Caroline! I always look forward to your posts, and can’t wait to read your cleverly crafted musings elsewhere! Best of luck!

  91. Tiffany says...

Good Luck Caroline, but before you go, dish. Is Jo a complete b*tch? I kid, I kid :)

  92. Kato says...

Ahh, I will miss your contributions here, Caroline! Love your writing and truly hope to read more of it soon in any form or place:-). Best of luck!

  93. Jos says...

Oh nooooo – I adore Caroline too – but am also excited to hear she is following her dream to write books. I love her recommendations – have four of hers on the Kindle now that I am working through. Good luck Caroline – and good luck on replacing her Jo. How lucky will the new editor be to work with you!

  94. Aya says...

Oh no!!!! We’ll miss you, Caroline!!
    Bet wishes to you.

  95. Anastasia says...

Oh so sad! I love Caroline!

  96. nicole b. says...

Caroline! You will be missed! Thank you for sharing your wit, style, spunk and spirit with us. You have a way of truly connecting with people through your writing. (I think all of us that we would like to be your friend in real life.) Joanna – please keep us posted on her work, so we may follow along and support her in her journey. You both are hugely inspiring to me as writers. I remember when you were with Glamour, Joanna, and made the leap to Cup of Jo full-time. Cheers to those leaps, ladies. It’s a joy to watch you grow. xo

  97. i am so sad to read this! bestest of luck, caroline! i look forward to your contributions….

  98. jlhbhat says...

Caroline! Good luck, and stay in touch via Cup of Jo, my favorite online community, hands down.

I wish I could be your Seattle correspondent for house tours and beauty uniforms, which are two of my favorite features!

    jlhbhat

    • Olma says...

What a good idea! I enjoy the beauty uniforms feature but feel that it would be interesting to hear from people who didn’t have blogs or work in the arts/media. I would like to read a beauty uniform from a doctor in Seattle or a nurse in Texas.

    • Kathy says...

Oh my gosh I just had to echo olma’s statement. Would love to hear about a beauty uniform from someone in a different field than arts/media, being in the medical field myself. But anyway, loved Caroline and will miss her – looking forward to hearing a new voice on cupofjo though. I love this blog!

  99. Anne says...

How has it already been two years?! Best of luck, Caroline! Your voice will be so missed. Can’t wait to see what you write next!

  100. Will miss you, Caroline! Hopefully she’ll still pop in from time to time?

  101. Ashley says...

How sad for us! And there is no way it has been two years! Best of luck to Caroline!

  102. Emma says...

I’m so sad to see Caroline go!!!! Good luck Caroline….

  103. Olma says...

Good Luck Caroline. You have a unique voice and a wonderful writing style. I very much look forward to reading your future projects.

  104. I’d be all about this if I could work remotely from Detroit!

  105. I’ll miss your posts, Caroline, but can’t wait to see what you do next!

  106. Best of luck, Caroline!! I have loved reading all of your posts.

  107. Oh, I’m sad. Very sad. But excited for Caroline! We will miss you. I actually wondered just yesterday if that would ever happen. But I am still excited to see whoever else COJ brings on!

  108. Summer says...

NOOOOOOOOOOO! We love Caroline! Okay, fiiine, but congratulations and all. ;) Glad she’ll still be contributing.

  109. I’ve so enjoyed reading your work Caroline! And I cannot begin to imagine the amount of behind the scenes work you do for this (my favorite) site! Good luck in your future endeavors! And good luck finding the perfect new voice to bring to Cup of Jo! Look forward to reading a new and fresh perspective :)

    xoxo http://www.touchofcurl.com

Good luck Caroline! You”ll be missed.

  113. isavoyage says...

Caroline, I will miss your unique voice. I am glad to hear that you will contribute and I look froward to reading your books! You are an amazing writer with a real voice.

  114. isavoyage says...

You need a French version of COJ. I can be your editor then!
There is no equivalent to COJ here in France and I would so love to be part of it!

    • Loops says...

Totally agree! Start it yourself? Tasse d’Isa….

    • I would read that!

  115. laeti says...

    Dream Job…!!!

  116. Elise says...

    We’ll miss you, Caroline!

(Such a bummer I’m from Belgium in stead of Brooklyn… ;-))

  117. Nicole Brant says...

Noooo… Caroline! I’ll miss you! Best of luck and keep us posted on all future projects!

  119. alison says...

    NO! Caroline! We’ll miss you!

  120. How sad! It seems like yesterday that Caroline started writing here, but I’m sure she will be an amazing author!

  121. Mallory says...

  122. Juliana says...

Best of luck to Caroline!!! I can’t believe it’s already been two years – how time flies!
