A Room of One’s Own

Parachute Bedding & Bath

When I moved from Missouri to New York (to be the editorial assistant for Cup of Jo), I arrived to an empty bedroom with only a single suitcase. I decided to leave behind my bulky furniture (I miss you, dear green couch) and old bed and bath linens. It was my Mary Tyler Moore moment, and I wanted it to feel like a new beginning…

Parachute Bedding & Bath

For the first few nights I slept on an air mattress, figuring out what to do next. I live with two roommates, so I was hoping my bedroom would feel like a sanctuary — a place for my introverted self to unwind after a long day in the city. I also wanted to keep things simple, with a fluffy bed and artwork that reminded me of my family.

Parachute Bedding & Bath

When I needed bedding, I asked the girls at work for a recommendation. One of their favorites was Parachute, a home essentials brand that works directly with the best manufacturers in Europe, so they can offer beautiful pieces without the higher price tag. They’re known for their modern aesthetic and thoughtful details – for example, their pillowcases have a back envelope closure instead of the traditional side opening (goodbye, messy fabric!).

A Room of One's Own

Parachute has pretty percale and sateen bedding, but I went with the Linen Venice Set in “Fog.” The sheets are so soft and airy, I actually raved to my roommates the next morning that I hadn’t woken up once all night (unprecedented).

A Room of One's Own

As with any big move, there have been bouts of stress and homesickness. There are days when FaceTime isn’t enough, and I wish I could close my eyes and be back on my parent’s front porch swing, with everything exactly how it was before I left. Then there are days when I turn on Paul Simon’s Graceland as I walk around Brooklyn and think, “How did I get this lucky?” A couple weeks ago, my roommate Lynsey nudged me with a smirk after I said “home,” while referring to our apartment. For the first time, the title finally fit.

Parachute Bedding & Bath

I’m such a fan of Parachute that I’m psyched to help spread the word about their bath collection, which launches today. The towels are loomed from 100% long-staple Turkish cotton, so they are incredibly soft, while still absorbent and durable. And, like the bedding, they come at an accessible price. The collection features washcloths, hand towels, bath towels, and, if you really want to go wild, bath sheets that are 66% bigger than the bath towels. Our little bathroom stool has never looked lovelier.

Parachute Bedding & Bath

Thank you so much, Parachute! See their full collection here.

  1. I have 5 Towels but never assemble like your shown image, lol. I just gathered the new design ideas from your post.

  2. Gen says...

Can you do a post on your experience in moving to New York? It would be a great read, especially for myself as I’m moving there in the fall for grad school!

  3. Jolynn says...

I love the light on the night stand. Where can I find it or one similar? Thanks

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Thanks so much, Jolynn. It was from West Elm this summer.

      Stella xx

  4. Cheryl says...

What a lovely room. I love the mirror. Where is it from?

  5. Quick question! Did you get your duvet cover from Parachute as well? Or maybe it’s not even a duvet, I’m not sure!

  6. As a girl from Arkansas wanting to make a big move like this in the near future, this was a very refreshing post. Your apartment looks stunning! Really inspiring- thanks for this post!

  7. Maggie says...

    Hello from Jefferson City!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

      Aw! Hi Maggie! xoxoxo

  8. Congrats from a Springfield reader. Another Blackmon following his/her dream. All the best to you in your new life. NYC is the best.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

You are the sweetest, Penny. Your comment means the world to me. Hope you are well! xo

  9. KB says...

It made my day learning that Rosie Winstead is your aunt. Oh my – what a blast from my past! And she is so talented. I grew up in Springfield. It was just such a treat to see her name have all of those memories flood back!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

What a crazy, small world, KB. I’ll have to tell her. Rosie is seriously the best. Thanks for your super kind comment.

      Stella xx

  10. This post is lovely and your apartment looks very welcoming! I have a bit of unrelated question though… Could you, at some point, do a post about what it’s been like moving to Brooklyn? It is one of my dream places to live. My husband and I often talk about moving there once he’s done with grad school.

    • RA says...

This post made me giggle. Magical Brooklyn! I was born and raised in Brooklyn – and not the hip(ster) parts, old-school south Brooklyn, rowhouses and all. NYC generally is loud; it’s smelly, it’s crowded, people are too busy for you, the food is amazing, there is always something to do, you are in the middle of it. But it’s not for everyone. I personally like having a yard larger than the size of a postage stamp. Having grown up here, I find that NO other cities in the world impress me. Nothing compares. So that’s the New Yorker answer for you. It’s amazing and shitty and the same time!

  11. Beautiful artwork on the wall in that bedside photo. Something familiar about it….

  12. I’ve never tried linen bedding before and would love to get my hands on some in the future. Linen is usually a little bit rough but I guess these sheets are different?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Mun! I am usually really picky, but these linen sheets have a softened feel. Definitely recommend!

      Hope this helps!
      Stella xx

    • Amie says...

I have a linen duvet cover (just from ikea) and it was rough-ish at first but is so soft now!

  13. Maywyn says...

You two look like Jennifer Garner and Anne Hathaway.

    • I did a double take too, thought she was jennifer garner.

and i must add, your ‘have a nice weekend’ are my MOST fav posts of all. your random links are my indulgence.

  15. I wish I could just pick up my bags and go! You are brave, I still cant find a reason to leave :/ The towels look extremely soft.

  16. Ok, this is beautiful bedding & a nicely done post, but my comment is totally off-topic. Is Julie Blackmon your sister??? I love her stuff! My husband brought her book home from the library one day, and we all enjoyed it- especially my toddler.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

This is so much fun to read. She is my mom :)! I can’t wait to pass on your kind words to her.

  17. Amanda G says...

Does Parachute offer a wedding registry?? Their products look simple yet luxurious. I am so over the not-to-be-named typical department store designs!

    Pretty please!

  18. Nina says...

oh I like your bed table light. so…I have a big dog, and a little boy, and spending so much on bedding just seems impractical to me. My bedding gets ripped/holes in it so easily – I like really, really soft sheets and they seem to disintegrate within a year or so. anyone else? I have no idea WHAT is done to rip it…my dog is not a digger but we just get holes. so do these last? I usually just buy the softest I can at TJ Maxx…

  19. Emily says...

Totally unrelated, but my grandmother grew up on a farm outside of Springfield that my father actually recently bought back after decades of being owned by someone else. I’m excited to spend more time there and watch my kids play in the creek ! (I grew up in a big city on the east coast and NEVER visited Springfield so this farm is a novelty to me !)

    • Stella Blackmon says...

That is amazing to hear, Emily. Springfield will always have my heart. :)

  20. Katherine says...

But then you can only use one side of your pillow :( No flipping it over in the middle of the night to the delicious cool side

    • I like the way Ikea pillowcases are sewn, with an envelope on the side. This way the messy edge gets tucked in neatly, and you can flip them if you’d like :)

  21. your room looks so peaceful- i hope it’s the sanctuary you are looking for in this city :) ah bath sheets! such a great idea! i’ll have to purchase a few of those for myself

I am always so impressed by young women who move to big cities on their own. It’s something I wish I had done when I was younger. Also, the other woman with you looks like Jennifer Garner! I had to do a double take! Thank you for the bedding suggestions, in the market for some new bedding :) This looks perfect!

  23. Laura says...

Linen sheets sound like a dream. But, like, the wrinkliest dream ever. Do these come out of the dryer in a wrinkled heap? I would love to give them a try but I draw the line at ironing my bed sheets!

    • Linen sheets look really good wrinkled, in my opinion. Google some pictures and see if you like them.

  24. Stumbled upon Cup of Jo thanks to the Bloglovin Explore tab. I love this post! The room is so simple, but so elegant. Pretty much shopping the entire Parachute site right now!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve been looking for beautiful gray linen sheets and your recommendation was perfect timing. And I also love your story! It is always fun to learn more about the people behind the writing. :) I’m introverted too! Your room is so bright, cozy and fresh! So much inspiration for my next move!

  26. Ali says...

Love Burts Bees new lipsticks! And I can’t wait to budget for these sheets!

  27. Oh I love how crisp and clean these white sheets look. I also live in a shared house (sharing the kitchen, private bathroom), how do you cope with the shared house? For me it was hard in the beginning as my roomates were ehm… not the warmest human beings, but now it’s far better. :)

    love, from http://www.inwhirlofinspiration.com

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Despoina! Thanks so much for your kind words. I am lucky to live with my two friends who moved here with me. Having roommates can be really hard though – I am so glad things are looking up for you.

      Thanks,
      Stella xx

  28. Lore says...

I’m Mexican (as in living in Mexico) and all my pillows cases have envelope closures, so I find funny that this is a great discovery thought I totally agree is a thousand times better than your regular pillow… after all that’s why at got them in the first place!
I have no doubt this bedding must be heavenly comfortable after seeing the price tag, it’s way too expensive for me. Defenetly a New Yorker or even an American thing to splurge in such a thing, i wish i could.
Loved the aesthetics of the post and also it’s nice to get to know the people working behind cup of jo.

    • Heather D says...

Not this American. ;) I would never spend that much on sheets/towels/linens!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Aw, thanks so much, Crystal! :)

      Stella xx

    • Me too! Sometimes we take this for granted but for example, being able to get out of the shower and find a warm, dry, and clean towel…It’s just one of my favorite things.

  29. I love the room but I couldn’t help but notice yor lovely hair!!! A friend of mine says that I’m obsessed with hair and now that I think about it she might be right…

  30. lovely pictures! Nice to read about the brand as well.

  31. Laura says...

I’ve lived in the UK my whole life and have never seen a pillowcase with the envelope back closure before – that makes so much sense! – ours usually have the side closure. Your room is so nicely decorated :)

    • Georgina says...

I’m from the UK as well and have never found any until recently – I got a duvet set with pillowcases with back closures at the West Elm store in London – they are so much better, the side closures always annoy me when I’m fussily plumping.

  32. Hi Stella! Can I ask where you got your pretty top?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Lizzy! Thank you!! It’s from Everlane. Stella xx

  33. So lovely! I was just daydreaming about pulling together a sleeping space which feels more like a sanctuary than an office/couch/dining room/bed. Can’t wait to explore! Beautiful pictures and lovely story. Xx!

  34. Foundryandforge says...

Would have loved to see a reader discount :/)

    • same here. or free shipping or something like that :D

    • lauren s says...

Parachute also sponsored the 99% invisible podcast this week and they offered a $25 discount with code 99pi. Hope that helps!

    • lauren s says...

Oh! Forgot to mention that shipping is also always free – double win!

  37. Elisabeth says...

Is it just me or does the girl on the right in that photo look exactly like a young Jennifer Garner!?

    • I thought the exact same thing!

    • Me, too! I thought for sure there would be some reference to Jennifer Garner. How funny!

    • Julia says...

Me too, was just about to post a comment on this!

    • Eliza says...

      Totally thought that too. :)

  38. Michelle says...

Is your fitted sheet also linen (it’s part of the Venice set, but maybe not in your pics?) and if so, do you find it scratchy?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Michelle! Thanks so much for your comment. It is linen! I don’t find it scratchy at all and I am usually really picky about that. Lexi was telling me that linen sheets will soften even more with use, too.

      Hope this helps!

      Stella xx

  39. alexandra says...

This looks very lovely. Just had to chuckle a little bit at the mention of the envelope closure for a pillow case being touted as something special – every European pillow case that I have ever met has the closure in the back, not on the side (except maybe IKEA). I usually buy “pillow shams” as they have the back closure, and I really dislike the messy look of the side closure.

    • Meghan says...

I thought the same! I’m American but like in the UK and all the pillowcases have that envelope closure–an old roommate of mine was “horrified” at my American pillowcases!

  40. Mary Jenkins says...

What a beauty, inside and out! Thanks for sharing your home and thoughts with us, Stella.

  41. Katie Larissa says...

So happy to finally “meet” Stella! I feel like saying welcome to the family, because Cup of Jo does feel like a family sometimes. :)

Also I use burts bees lipstick as blush too. It’s just the right shade!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Zoe! I moved from Springfield. :)

  45. Jenna says...

This is a beautifully done sponsored post. It drives me crazy when blog readers/insta followers complain about sponsored posts, since its obviously how you make money, but this is such a beautiful little write up about human emotions and great linens that nobody could be mad at that!

  46. Elizabeth R says...

I have been meaning to try this bedding. I also need a new mattress. Most of the direct to home mattresses (Casper, Tuft and Needle, etc) have not rated well for side sleepers, sadly, and most mattresses in stores have proven to be prohibitively expensive. But maybe new bedding will spice up my old mattress! ;). Hope NYC feels like home soon. Random note, but what is the art in the background of the picture with you and the other person? Love it.

    • cait says...

As a fellow side sleeper I just have to tell you that I have the Tuft and Needle and it has been one of my most favorite purchases! Totally not affiliated in any way, just want to share my experience since I bought one and have been in love with my bed ever since! I say go for it.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Elizabeth, I am a side sleeper too! I feel your pain.

The photo is by my mom (http://www.julieblackmon.com/) and the paintings are by my aunt, Rosie Winstead (http://www.rosiewinstead.com/). :)

Thanks so much for your sweet comment. Stella xx

  47. Brittany says...

As a fellow Missourian (Joplin), I think it is so cool you made the move to NYC! I always thought that would be the most interesting way to spend my early 20s, but it never seemed feasible. I applaud you for going for it!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Brittany! Thanks for you kind comment. Come visit :)

  48. Rachel says...

Not related to bedding (at all) but would you mind sharing what blush you use? We have similar complexions and I love the color!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Rachel, you’re making me blush. :) I actually smudged Burt’s Bee lipstick (in Sunset Cruise) on my cheeks last minute.

    • OMG! I do that too! The all natural blushes that I checked out were out of my budget, and I didn’t want to put blush with artificial color on my face, so I started using the lip stuff. You honestly can’t even feel it once it’s on. I use this one in Niagra Overlook: http://www.burtsbees.com/Lip-Crayon/VM-792850028500,default,pd.html
