Have a Fun (Long) Weekend.

Dancing

What are your plans for this weekend? Everyone in our family has a cold, so we’ll be lying low. But Alex and I are still having a few friends over tomorrow to order pizza and play poker. I recently learned and am into it. Have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

This photo made my heart swell.

Read by Famous sell books read by famous people. Not copies of titles they have read, but the actual books they owned and read. The proceeds benefit literary non-profits.

My friends want to have a party and take these!

15 times Larry David said what we were all thinking.

How to undress a woman. (“Remove socks before removing pants.”)

Ballerina Misty Copeland in Degas paintings.

Love these temporary tattoos.

I found this wedding beauty routine fascinating to read. (It makes me feel like I walked off a farm to get married.)

I’m on the hunt for a pretty one-piece swimsuit. Thoughts on this one?

What romance means after ten years of marriage.

A pretty tea towel.

You can rent Van Gogh’s famous bedroom on Airbnb!

Remember your friends’ sad anniversaries, too.

Finally, has everyone seen this hip-hop gymnast? I love how her team dances along with her on the sidelines.

The piece on marriage was incredible. Wonderfully written and wonderfully true.

  2. Emily says...

I just ordered that swimsuit in the mail so I’m sort of LOLing about the comments.. I think it’s rad and slightly different. And it it doesn’t fit I will return it. You never know how you’ll feel about it until you order it, so I say go for it :)

  3. I salute Emily for her tenacity when it comes to wedding prep. I bought 10 visits for 1 hour facials months and months before my wedding and only managed to use 3. haha!

  4. I went to the evergaldes national park for Valentines with my boyfriend! Took a soul cycle class yesterday, had yummy tea and worked all day on my blog today. IT WAS A GREAT WEEKEND!

Man I love Larry David – that was hilarious! Thanks for that.
Also, thanks for writing “lying low” and not “laying low” :) – I’m trying to reverse the grammar damage on my toddler today who thinks it’s “lay down” instead of “lie down.” Why doesn’t anyone get this one right?

    • Olma says...

      Ha! Ha!
Your toddler will correct himself when he hears you saying it the right way. Otherwise you will make him paranoid and he will always question whether he is saying it properly!
      Remember those teachers!

    • Yes! One time, when I was young, my dad corrected me by saying, “Chickens lay eggs. You lie down.” I hear it in my head every time that comes up now!

If you’re looking for a chic, comfortable one piece, I cannot recommend Boden highly enough. Their two pieces are great too. I bought a gorgeous strapless navy blue one piece for my honeymoon last year and my husband calls it my “princess” suit… It reminds him of classy Kate Middleton :) they always have a bunch of fun, retro prints and classic colors.

Honestly, you cannot beat the quality of their suits for the price. I’ve had all of my Boden suits for years and they are just damn well made. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another J Crew suit…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes!!! good idea!

  7. Jennifer says...

I heart the picture! The swimsuit is ok too many colors but the style is spot on just one color, I think the minimal look looks great on everyone. Also misty is so amazing and the sad anniversaries article is something we do. Makes you feel more in tuned with people’s emotions. And yes I have seen the talented gymnast loved the gymnastics the young lady was doing. I saw it and was dancing along with her lol

  8. Rachel Anderson says...

I’m still laughing that the size large for that swimsuit is a size 6-8!

  9. Suzanne says...

I love Seafolly swim wear they are the best and the only brand I buy. I have bikini’s and tankini styles, I like the tankini style better than a one piece suit and you can mix and match tops and bottoms. Check out their site lots of lovely styles it’s so hard to choose!

  10. I adore that soul train pic. As far as bathing suits. The striped one is super cute. I also like the La Blanca Caged strap one piece in papaya.

  11. I had not heard of the MBerry. Looks so fun! We are going on a vacation next week with a bunch of friends and I’m bringing those to check out. Thanks for sharing!!

  12. Susan M. says...

I would love to see someone in the Van Gogh room. It looked great, but I couldn’t imagine sleeping there. The pre-wedding routine: too much, too much, too much. What will she do if she has kids? She will need to read the 10 years married article. No colon cleansing required, people.
Love the Degas spread — go, Misty! fascinating interpretation.
    Loved Larry David – wow.
That striped swim suit – no. Not a good look for you. I loved the asos keyhole suggestion, though, from another poster.
A tip on pregnancy swimwear: I just wore my bikini when I got big. There was no camouflaging the bump, and it looked weird under too much cloth. It looks big when bare as well, but somehow blends better. Plus bikini top looks amazing with better pregnancy cleavage:)

  13. Lauren says...

Cheers to one-pieces but nah on that swimsuit, Jo… it’s a little…mature…for you, if you know what I mean ;) You’re a hawty with a bawty!

PS — blog’s been killin’ it lately! Tx for still being my favorite workday break.

  14. Margie says...

    Swimsuit. No, just no. Sorry,

  15. Natalie says...

If you’re still looking for a one-piece, check out Onia. I bought myself the “Kelly” this summer in black, and I don’t know if I’ll ever wear anything else! I love the modern take on such a classic cut. The low scoop back is just the right amount of sexy. Plus, it FEELS amazing. You can tell it’s really well constructed.

Wow. Just read the piece on romance after 10 years of marriage. So beautiful. Love it. Thank you.

  17. Libbynan says...

Wow Friday links! Love Misty….. those legs are a national treasure. I like that swimsuit. The bright stripes would be uber flattering. Also a real treat to see your twin in People. It was a good article.

  18. We are planning on going tobogganing in the fresh snow! It’s currently -37 here in Ontario Canada, so we gotta do something to stay warm!

The Miracle Berry! I hadn’t thought about that in years!

I did a party like that–it’s super fun! My favorite were lemons. My only advice would be not to go too crazy. As we discovered the hard way (Lemons! Limes! Grapefruit! Vinegar! Warheads! All the things!), an evening of eating sour and acidic stuff can give you a serious belly-ache :)

  20. Loribeth says...

    1) Um, my family thought I was crazy to pay my regular hair dresser to wash and curl my hair the morning of our wedding. I also got eyelash extensions but that’s because I happy cry too much and they made me feel like a million dollars.

    2) The 10 years of marriage article made me cry and was very timely. Such a good reminder.

    Feel better soon!

  21. clare says...

last winter, my law school friends and i actually did have a party where we took the weird berries.

  22. Madeline says...

That beauty routine… wow. I thought paying someone to do my makeup on my wedding day was indulgent. Colon clensing?

  23. Elizabeth says...

ADORE the piece about ten years of marriage; my husband and I are at eight years and two sons. The swimsuit is wrong, but you have such wonderful taste that I’m sure you’ll find something terrific. xo

  24. Char says...

I like the swimsuit, but after several hellish shopping trips looking for a one-piece for my post-baby body, I gave up on simple tank suits. I just needed something with more structure, and the tank suits definitely didn’t do the girls justice. I ended up finding a super sweet Esther Williams retro number (I did a black classic one piece). http://esther-williams.com
I will miss my bikini, but feel pretty awesome in this suit!

  25. Angel says...

Congrats on Lucy and Paul’s book in People.

  26. denise says...

I’m all for pampering but that wedding prep is way too much for me…i agree it made me feel like I walked out of a farm on my wedding day. to think i have pictures with my face all puffy from crying tears of joy..the horror!

  27. You should definitely do a miracle berry food-tripping party – it’s so weird and funny to experience eating lemons, balsamic vinegar, hot sauce, etc. straight. I brought mberry tablets into my ad agency office once, recruited doubtful participants for a taste test and they wound up loving it and raiding the office kitchen for foods to try.

  28. Have fun playing poker! My mom and her two sisters fly out to Utah every Presidents’ Day weekend to play poker with their cousins. Both teams pick a theme for their costumes and surprise each other the day of the game; this year they are going as the Golden Girls! I love it that they have that tradition :)

  29. I’ve had two close friends lose a parent this year, I cannot imagine the pain and sadness you would feel each year morning their passing. I like the reminder to remember the sad anniversaries as well, those are probably more important than the happy ones.

  30. Lauren E. says...

Oh god, that pre-wedding list… I’ll give her the excuse that as a beauty blogger, I’m sure she was thinking she could write about it all but STILL. Holy mackerel. I don’t want to look back on my wedding pictures wistfully thinking, “I’ll never look THAT good again.” I’d like to look like me, just on one of the happiest days of my life :)

    • Celeste says...

Right?! I didn’t do a single thing outside of the norm ahead of time to prepare. This is extremely lazy, and I realize this, but I even painted my nails in the car on the way to the venue. Ha! (I did get my hair done by a professional, but nothing else.)

That said, I felt really beautiful and comfortable in my skin on my wedding day. I look at the photos and I think how I wouldn’t have done anything differently–it was all perfect!

  31. I’ve tried the miracle fruit in a party with friends. It changes the taste of bitter and acid food. It can be fun to discover the effects it has on food and it doesn’t last that long (maybe half hour). For exemple, a limon will taste like very sweet limonade. But the real miracle about this fruit is that it can help kids take meds. My little girl was sick when she was about 9 months old. We had to give her liquid cortisone and she kept rejecting it by vomiting. So we gave her a bit of miracle fruit, let it work its magic and then she was able to take her meds. My husband and I were relieved and happy to know that she would finally get a chance to feel better.

  32. gogogramma says...

    Swimsuit is horrid, sorry :(

  33. Gabby D. says...

I typically LOVE your style but I think the striped suit is a miss! I agree with the poster who said that the boobies wouldn’t too hot. I think those tank suits are best on children and women with large-ish, perky girls aka Baywatch babes.

    • Carolyn says...

Sorry to say I don’t love the swimsuit either. I think a black strapless one piece can look amazing and super chic.

  34. oh yes. the miracle fruit tablets! I have taken those before and they are amazing. the taste of lemons with those things is crazy.

  35. NA says...

That wedding day prep was utterly bananas. I wasn’t aware colon cleansing was a prerequisite for holy matrimony …

  36. elly says...

I think you could rock any one piece! That one is colourful and has sped lines (bonus). This year is my first bikini since college – wish me luck.

Remember how to get a beach body: take your body to the beach.

  37. samantha says...

please, please get the miracle berry tablets and have a fun taste testing night. i did it in college and it’s incredible!

  38. Laura says...

I appreciate the link about remembering people’s sad anniversaries. My cousin, with whom I was very close, passed away on February 15 four years ago. The weeks leading up to this day and the day itself are difficult every year. It’s a very strange feeling to go about my days “business as usual” and interacting with people as if everything is normal while feeling especially mournful. It’s nice to have that reminder that other people are aware of your grief even if that grief is silent.

  39. Rozanne says...

I love the swimsuit ! I am sure it will look perfect on you.

  40. I really loved those Larry David gifs. So hilarious!

  41. A very dear friend lost her father while she was only a teenager. On Valentine’s Day. I always remember that ‘sad anniversary’ as it seems especially awful.

As a mother of a child who died, it means so so much to me when someone notes the day my daughter died. Sadly, there are very few who do.

  42. Allyn says...

I love the article about romance after 10 years of marriage. After just 2 years for us, my husband had to tolerate and do unspeakable things for me after/during a lengthy hospitalization. This nurse was being taken care of by her attorney husband who had no clue what he was doing but stepped up to the plate and did it anyway. That’s romance.

  43. Gem says...

LOVED those paintings with Misty Copeland (I tend to love everything with Misty Copeland) but ugh, I am rolling my eyes so hard about that women’s pre-wedding routine. You do not need spray water up your butt in order to get married, Jesus Christ! I feel like the whole world has become hypnotized by silly psuedo-science health and wellness fads lately! :)

    • Janet says...

The saddest part was that she only felt like an 8/10 on her wedding day!! Being a beauty blogger must be hard for your self-esteem – always seeing “flaws” and room for improvement.

  44. Maddy says...

Love the bathing suit. I just bought that one in the same color!
Solid and Striped is also having a sale on their site through the weekend, 25% off all purchases, if you wanted some incentive ;)

  45. Caz says...

Ahh I needed a Friday afternoon giggle and that “How to Undress a Woman” article was perfect!

Shopping for a swimsuit can be so tricky to find the perfect one! I think something simple but with an interesting feature is lovely, like this one:

    or this one:

  46. Danielle says...

Your weekend links are the best!

  47. Libby says...

Those magic fruit tabs are so much fun!! We had a tasting party a while ago with all sorts of different fruits, candy, etc. read the reviews of what people liked/ didn’t like and go to town! :) You can eat lemons that taste like lemonade.

  48. Anne says...

That wedding beauty routine – all that work and she was only “8/10 happy with how I looked”! This girl needs to work on her priorities haha

    • Ashley says...

Ha! I was going to say the same thing! That’s a lot of work for 8/10. Honestly, I was reading the article hoping it would turn out to be a satire. Your caption on this, Joanna, made me laugh.

  49. Nicole says...

It’s just slightly irritating to refer to Sophina DeJesus as a hip-hop gymnast. Not that it’s an insult – it’s just strange because no modifier is necessary when other (award-winning) gymnasts incorporate other styles of dance (that are usually not from brown countries). JustsayingDon’tkillmeLoveyouJo.

    • Nicolle says...

I thought I was being hypersensitive that this bothered me a little, too. Maybe it’s the name ;)!

  50. Katie Larissa says...

That swimsuit has a really negative review, if you’re the kind of person who goes by reviews before she purchases. (I am.)

Since there are so many women who read here and give such amazing advice in the comments, (seriously though, COJ is the only blog where I WANT to read the comment section almost as much as the post itself!) I wondered if anyone could recommend a maternity swimsuit they just LOVED? I just found out I’ll be hugely pregnant when we go to the beach late summer, and I’ve never shopped for a maternity swimsuit before. Thanks in advance, y’all!

  51. You NEED to have a Miracle Berry party. A couple of blueberries on a ritz cracker with a little dab of sour cream tastes like AMAZING blueberry cheesecake!

  52. THAT PHOTO! Oh wow, I’m swooning.

Sorry to hear you’re all under the weather. That is the pits. Get well soon! xo

  53. Roxana says...

Love that striped suit, but as a warning, when I was one-piece shopping last year I found that tank suits (comme the one you link) made my post-breast-feeding-two-babies boobs look like shriveled water balloons hanging down to my belly, but, you know, smashed underneath a suit. Not a good look.

I found that a one-piece bandeau (with a little padding) helped perk-up the girls in a “natural” way. I could wear the suit without the padding, too, but I didn’t mind the “help.”

Either way, super cute suit! Also, thanks for the link on remembering sad anniversaries. . . just as important.

  54. check out shopbop for good one piece swimsuits! they’re really beautiful, but a little pricey

    hammyta.wordpress.com

  55. Emily M. says...

That suit isn’t bad, Joanna, but I think you can do better! You should go with something simple and flattering.

  56. Linda says...

I absolutely love the Degas “photography” and the Van Gogh room!! Both are such beautiful variations on masterpieces! Thanks for sharing them! :)
