Have a Lovely Weekend.

What are your plans for the weekend? Toby has winter break from school, so we took a four-day trip to the beach this week, and we’re flying back this weekend. It has been a treat to escape the cold and snow. Hope you have a good one, and here are some fun links from around the web…

This impression of Rachel from Friends is dead on.

A stylist’s wedding. What beautiful ideas!

Definitely what my fellow runners are thinking.

The hummus hack.

I’ve been reading this memoir and really liking it. (It reminds me a bit of The Dept. of Speculation.)

Fist bump!

A fun round-up of goodies.

This tough quiz tests your knowledge of British and Irish accents.

It’s a miracle we ever met.”

How to stop crying over chopped onions.

A spaghetti pie.

How to overcome worry and be a friendlier person. (The leadership section is great.)

Have a good one. xoxo

  1. I am reading The Folded Clock per this recommendation (and the fact that all I seem to read now is memoir) and I love it. I loved these sentences so very much I felt they needed to be shared here:

“In her brain she runs a computer program to evade dooms no one has even considered. There’s nothing she hasn’t thought of, and thought of and thought of, poor woman.”

Thank you for always leading me to such wonderful books!

So beautiful and resonant! It’s such a good yet intense book. I had to take breaks while reading it! For other memoirs, I adore Epilogue, The Glass Castle and Persepolis (the graphic novel).

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you so much, vic! i love that article.

  2. Laura says...

I look forward to this round up every week! I love your blog oh-so-much. Keep rockin’. :)

  3. Sandra says...

I love your blog; fun links and info! Definitely going to try the hummus hack!

  4. There are some great links there! I did the accents quiz and the only one I got wrong was confusing a Cornish accent with a Somerset one – unforgivable as I live bang in the middle of the two counties in Devon! Cor buggerrr.

  5. Trish O says...

So jealous about this winter break thing. I live in IL and we don’t have winter break from school in IL. It is not a thing here. We have school and then spring break. That’s it. So looking forward to spring break.

  6. Kristina says...

I just have to laugh about your reference to the Department of Speculation! I read that book on your recommendation and in it, the main character reads a self-help book on infidelity- and from the way she described it, it was the book I co-wrote! She’s not a fan of our terminology, which amused me because I’m not a fan of it either.

  7. Rubyshoes says...

I made that spaghetti pie a few weeks ago and it turned out perfectly! (And it was delicious.)

  8. How nice to have a little get-away to somewhere warm with your family. The article from the onion made me chuckle! :-)

  9. I feel guilty every time i have to work during my kid’s long weekends. Sometimes taking off just isn’t an option! Super love the cute picture.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i know the feeling! the boys were off all week yet we didn’t leave until thursday; they would cry in the mornings that we weren’t staying home. also, in the summer, it feels so hard to go to work when they are both off school and wanting to go swimming, etc. work/life balance is impossible to get right all the time. i just try to remind myself that they feel very loved and the time we have together is so great. xoxo

  10. That accent quiz is so hard! It did it twice and still got less than 50%.

  11. Jenna says...

I have to ask, what brand is the dino shirt Toby is wearing? My son would go crazy for that!

  12. Marit says...

The Folded Clock is one of my favorite books of 2015. I felt like Heidi climbed into my mind and wrote down my thoughts.

  13. Your photos are just so perfect, love them!! I really loved the article on the running plan, inspirational.

  14. Lauren says...

Let down by the stylist’s wedding link, was hoping to get some ideas. Turned out to just be an ad for Jcrew products.

    • Lauren says...

Eh, nevermind. Looked at it again and a lot of the links that I thought were going to Jcrew products were actually to other merchants. And I can’t wait to try that hummus hack :)

  15. Jenny says...

That fist bump pic was adorable.

  16. Loved “The Folded Clock!” Relate to the author quite a bit (at least how she lives her life in her head, not in real life!). Enjoy!

  17. That onion trick might change my cooking life! I HATE cutting onions! And I loved the link on the wedding! I’m planning our small and intimate wedding this summer in Paris and it is so overwhelming planning a wedding overseas. It’s great to remember that small fun details can be so important in making a wedding unique!

  18. Kate says...

Um, OF COURSE that link turned out to be Jenny Kang — I love everything she does.

  19. Nina says...

Is the British/Irish accent test really hard for Americans? As a Brit I found the geography element (vague blobs on a blank map) much trickier than the accent recognition! And btw, an “RP” accent can be from anywhere, the whole point being that it’s “received pronunciation” rather than a regional accent. Most Londoners do NOT sound like that!

    • Cassie says...

I’m glad even a Brit found it hard! I’m not American but after living abroad (not in the UK) for many years, I find my accent recognition has got really good and I was excited to test it. But I only got 5/10, if they’d named the places I would have done much better!

  20. Great links!! I’m shocked by the onion trick. A good sign I need to sharpen my knives I guess.

    • By the way, Joanna, I mentioned and linked Cup of Jo from my blog today, AGAIN ! 😁

      Have a good one!

  21. we made the spag pie a few weeks ago! So delicious! …and incredibly filling. Deb’s recipes are ALL delicious though!

  22. Elle G. says...

Jocelyn K. Glei’s lean list officially made my day! I’ve printed it out and taped it to my wall (that’s for now. i’ll come up with something more enduring over the weekend!). LOVE. it.

  23. Anna says...

The best trick I have found with chopping onions is to stick the onion in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting. It works every time!

  24. Lauren says...

Is that Seth MacFarlane co-piloting the plane?

  25. Wow, the onion revelation… That explains why my eyes have “become more sensitive” to onions over the past two years. I am definitely having my favorite knife sharpened!

  26. Carmen B. says...

That list from Dale Carnegie, where has it been all my life? I’m a worrier and one of the things I worry about is not being very friendly :-(
    I’ll be practicing these tips.

  27. Wish you a wonderful four-days trip to the beach! I don’t have concrete plans for the weekend but one thing is sure: I’ll sleep in :)
