Thin Gold Bangles

Trio of Bangles

For the past ten, maybe twenty years, I’ve worn a black hair elastic on my wrist (exhibits A, B, C, D…) I have it on as I type this very post!

But the other day, I went to lunch with a friend, and she was wearing a very thin gold bangle. It looked so graceful, as she moved her arms from her wine glass to the bread basket. Now I’m inspired to upgrade. Here are five lovely versions: charm, crisscross, geometric, thin and turquoise.

Thoughts? Which do you like?

P.S. Initial necklaces, and a secret trick.

(Photo above of a trio of bangles from Of a Kind.)

I’m sure someone has already commented, but just in case… you’ll have to check out these: http://www.mariashireen.com/collections/all.

I’ve never used them, but a friend bought one to wear for a few weddings she attended last summer… so genius.

Enjoy! (PS. Also writing this with a black elastic on my wrist haha)

I was going to post the same link. I dropped hints for my husband last Christmas, but I’m still sporting my plain old black hair tie.

  2. Beck says...

Girl you need some BitterSweet. They’re bangles that have an indent to hold your hair elastic, so you can wear the elastic and have a classy looking bangle as well. Practical and stylish.

  3. For year and years I used to always wear a rubber band or three around my right wrist, which is in the same universe as a hair tie, but I recently got a tattoo of a line of text around my wrist that’s almost exactly the same width as the rubber band was and it’s gratifying in many of the same ways. (In case you’re looking for a more permanent, elegant solution…)

  4. Oh I love bangles!! I think they make such a finishing touch to an outfit. I quiet like the sound they make too as you move your arm about.
My fav is probably the classic thin one. Chuck a few of those babies on and you would be looking totally chic!

Love your blog! A real enjoyable read. Would love for you to check out my new blog if you get a chance :) http://www.mamameah.org

Look forward to reading more from you in the future :)

  5. Gabriella says...

This reminds me of when my sister and I went to South Africa and visited friends of friends. The hostess had an incredible tan and the only thing gracing her wrists was a set of two (or three? I can’t remember) thin silver bangles. I decided then and there that it was one of the most sleek, understated pieces of accessories a woman could own and I still think back on it 5+ years after seeing it.
(Meaning – yes, go for it! :))

  6. Oh, I am definitely the type that wears hairbands as bracelets. I have such tiny wrists – any bracelets I wear fall off anyways. Which is sad, because these gold bangles are beautiful!

  7. Leah says...

Love these bangles, but, Jo, you need an upgrade on your hair ties :) I make my own from elastic that I buy on the internet. I’ll give you a supply next time I see you. xo

  8. Do you type? (hint: yes). But those gold bangles do look GREAT next to a keyboard.

  9. Amy says...

i love the look of the thin elastic on the wrist, its very care free and unassuming. Plus, how nice does it feel when you go to put your hair up and its always there. Or the feeling you get when someone else wants a hair tie and boom you got it covered for them. Maybe that’s just me :)

  10. I’m an elastic wearer too :) Other than that, I wear my fitbit and a watch. That’s it. Loose, clanging bracelets irritate me. besides they interfere with me moving my mouse :)

  11. Marney says...

Love it! My wrists are oddly small, so I rarely am able to find bracelets that don’t fall off.

  12. Ella says...

this is hilarious! loved the photos… love when we recognise the things we do in an endearing way! xxx

  13. Thin and geometric!

  14. jen says...

I’m a elastic wearer. I have a gold band from Kate Spade, but it is annoying when I have it on and cant wait to remove it.

  15. i hate constantly having a hair elastic around my wrist, but i literally feel empty when i need one and can’t find one there. just can’t win!

  16. kadcat says...

Joanna, I am so guilty of this for the past 15 years. I always feel bad when I’m at the office wearing shorter sleeves and you can see it, or when I’m out with my boyfriend for a nice dinner and…there’s the elastic. I’ll take it off for a presentation or something to look more professional, but then I’ll lose it in my purse and not have it when I need one! But seeing that my favorite blogger does this just made my day, so thank you. :)

  17. Hilary says...

I love this look! Although with long hair I often need that hair band. How do I do both!

  18. Totally agree! I think an armful of thin gold bangles is so pretty (and I love their soft, metallic music). My husband started a tradition of finding a different, thin gold bangle on Etsy and giving me one as a as a wedding anniversary gift each year. :)
    http://homegardenlove.com/

  19. Cynthia says...

I like them all. I’ve never worn the black hair elastics because I’ve always had short hair. My husband gave me Caribbean hook bracelet with a heart for our anniversary one year, and I wear it a lot. He also gave me a classic Caribbean hook bracelet for Christmas one year. These bracelets do come in wrist sizes if you have a small wrist and they are sterling silver. Not inexpensive, but you will have them forever. I tend to wear only one, maybe two bracelets at once, otherwise, I feel overdone. I’ve loved jewelry ever since I was a child.

  20. Talia says...

    Such understated elegance!

  21. Great fashion look!! Kick it up a notch and find vintage bracelets!! We always have a variety at Pretty Funny Vintage in Tarrytown, NY! Less than a 40 minute express train from Grand Central!!!

  22. Bethany says...

I was JUST looking for some gold bangles! I love mine paired with a big watch.

  23. I love the idea of bangle bracelets, but they tend to annoy me whenever I wear them. They’re loud and move around too much. Now I reserve them just for nights out.

I’m a black elastic band girl all the way! Pretty much the only time it is not on my wrist is when it is in my hair like now!

  24. I love the look of slender gold bangles- especially in a small cluster! I couldn’t find exactly the ones that I wanted, so I started making them myself. I make them in 14K yellow gold fill as well as 14K rose gold fill, in stacks of 3 and 5, and in three sizes (the small is perfect for tiny wrists!). You can take a look at them here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/226005937/slender-gold-hammered-bangles-the-3?ref=shop_home_active_5

I’d love to make you a stack, Joanna! Just let me know what color and size and I’ll send them your way.

  25. Shelley says...

In Hawaii, the trend is 3-5 thin gold/silver bangles with a beachy small shell, tahitian pearl (my favorite), charm or small beach glass beads.

  26. My yoga studio sells these tiny, delicate gold bangles. Each one has a sweet little mantra on it. I bought the one that says “let your light shine” last summer and it’s the only thing I’ve worn on my wrist since. It always makes me smile and, funny fact, the mantra makes a great conversation starter with guys who think it’s a collective soul lyric (it was one of the first tings my new bf noticed haha)!! They come in gold but I love how soft the rose gold looks on my wrist. http://www.mantraband.com/collections

    • CM says...

I also wear these. I have one that says Be Present and another that says Live Joyfully. I wear them together and sometimes with a few other gold bracelets. I nice reminder during the sometimes chaotic days to take a moment and just breathe.

  27. Mrs O says...

Oh so guilty of this! …but I just came across @ribbonties on Instagram. I haven’t purchased yet but can’t wait! … And I’m a little sad I didn’t think to start this company myself!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      what a brilliant idea!

    • Natalie says...

I was going to suggest that, as well! I think it’s a good way to have the best of both worlds :)

  28. I wear five silver cuffs on my left wrist, one has been there for over 40 years. They jangle and jingle and my girls as little kids always said they could find me in a store if they just listened. The other day my daughter called my cell because “I could hear bracelets clinking and I thought you might be here in the store, too. But I didn’t hear crickets chirping when the phone rang, so you weren’t.” Apparently I’m a noisy gal! And since there are five cuffs…the hair tie hides underneath them. Or some days I have on two hair ties and a watch on the right hand. Or a hair tie on each wrist. What can I say? Long hair.

  29. There was a time that whenever my mother went to Iran she brought me back a bangle. Now I have a little stack of them right and left but she has stopped with that tradition. These above look really good, they would make themselves great above my others :)

  30. Lee says...

I too, have rocked a hair tie on my wrist for years. I just upgraded to a more sophisticated option, a gold bangle with a slot for the hair tie. The one I purchased doesn’t grip the hair tie as well as I’d like and it sometimes slides off so I’ll be trying this one next.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/121873772885?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82
It appears to have a better grip, although the one I bought is a bit sleeker.
    https://www.etsy.com/listing/264029870/hair-tie-bracelet-gold?ref=market
Either way, it makes me feel a little more adult and less thrown together.

  31. Chiara says...

I’ve a gold bangle which comes from the Twenties. It’s a little treasure and a memory of people who are very important to me…

  32. Janet says...

It’s a security thing. Having the hairband handy in case you need to pull your hair up for whatever reason, you know you can. I don’t wear it on my wrist but I would never go anywhere without a hair elastic, and sometimes maybe a spare! Thin gold bangles are lovely. Slip the hair elastic in your pocket ;-)

  33. Caz says...

Bangles and I have a love-hate relationship. I LOVE bangles and I think 2 or 3 thin and dainty ones look great together, but every time I wear them to work or dinner I get so annoyed by them clanging on the desk/table and end up taking them off.

I too, have a hair tie permanently on my wrist! But because I’m blonde I like to use blonde hair ties which means they are pretty much my skin colour so it’s not as noticeable :)

    • totally agreed with the clanging! i love the way they look and think they are so delicate, but i can’t wear them without making so much noise

      hammyta.wordpress.com

  34. nohatnogloves says...

All of them. I have now been reminded of my own thin gold bangle upstairs and so will put it on. I wore it on my wedding day, sole jewellery apart from engagement ring and ruby earrings from my mother. It was perfect. You can never have too many.

  35. Kerry Dunning says...

I love the delicate bracelets, but always afraid one of the children will snap them! Who is the photo of, I really love the jumper and wonder where its from?

  36. Prudence says...

I don’t wear bangles often but I do have a thin rose gold bangle that I love. Simple jewelry like this is very elegant and versatile!

Guilty! My black hair band is in my fancy work headshot, too.

I also wear two or three silver bangles every day though. I love the sound they make when they jingle a little bit in yoga. One is from my mom, one is from my boyfriend and one was given to me by volunteers from a past job, so they’re a sweet reminder of all of them every day.

  38. Emily says...

6 years ago, one of my bridesmaids ripped mine off my wrist just as I was about to walk down the aisle. I am forever grateful to her for that.

These days, so many mornings it starts out in my purse and I tell myself I’m going to be a grown up that day but by the time I lay down to sleep that night, it is somehow back on my wrist…

  39. I never considered myself a bracelet person, but I got a thin gold bangle for a secret Santa gift, only to find out a few days later my husband got me the Kate spade “heart of gold” bangle for Christmas! They look different enough to be fun, but not so much they clash. I’m told I look fancy every time I wear them :)

  40. I enjoy bracelets, and my favourite from your options was the thin, simple gold. Classic elegance that looks great with anything. Let us know which one you choose! :-)

  41. Tori says...

My favourite, daily accessories are two matte gold plated bracelets from my mother’s collection. One is round and the other is a soft square shape. She has no idea where she got them and I wish I knew so I could gift them or buy more for myself. They are simple and elegant and I expect to wear them my whole life. They bring me a lot of joy and comfort and always help me feel a little more put together, which is key as a first-time mom. Bonus: babies love them so they do double duty as toys in a pinch.

  42. I am addicted to my gold bangles! I have a mixture of Kate Spade, Alex and Ani, and a few randos I found at World Market. I think you will love the upgrade! Cannot wait to see pictures :)

  43. Shira says...

I’ve never noticed the hair tie! Now it’s going to be like “Where’s Waldo?”!

  44. Whitney says...

I’ve recently become a gold bangle convert. They’re so pretty and dress up any outfit. My favorites are from this amazing jewelry store in Seattle, Hitchcock. I discovered it when I lived around the corner and sadly have since moved away.

Here are the bracelets if anyone is interested!

  45. Meghan says...

Do you use the hair elastic to snap against your wrist when you feel anxious?

  46. Traci Barr Segal says...

Also having a delicate wrist and enjoying a bracelet or two, I’ve found luck purchasing quality jewelry on ETSY. Many of the artists have sizes to choose from or can be customized to fit you. I find that the quality and prices are much better than a catalogue or department store.

    • Fatima says...

Any sellers you can recommend? I have tiny wrists too!

  47. Peloin says...

Love the look! I’ve tried to pull it off (unsuccessfully) in the past. I’ve worn a couple on the same wrist but I disliked the noise. I also find it hard to wear bangles with a young baby because it hurts his head when I hold him! Guess I’ll have to wait :)

  48. I was in the black hair elastic club FOREVER. I’ve been trying really hard to not do it and wear bracelets more, but old habits die hard. Love that first bracelet you linked to. I’m thinking a bracelet like that might have to happen soon as I keep looking at and long ones of that style.

  49. Kate says...

Hah! I’m wearing one right now too! Lol you are the every gal’s gal, Joanna!

  50. I saw something recently (on FB? somewhere…) that said it’s a bad idea to wear hair elastics on your wrist (I am absolutely guilty!) Anyway, I didn’t click on the link but I imagine it has something to do with circulation :) I’ve since made an effort to stop doing it.

  51. I cringe at every photo of me with a black hair ie bracelet too, but it’s like always. Sometimes practicality wins.

  52. Have you seen the lovely thin stacking bangles in my boutique?
    http://bit.ly/bangleparty
I think you would like them also as there are single bangles or bangles you can stack. Mind you I find it impossible to wear bangles when working on a computer ;-)

  53. This totally reminds me of these hair tie bracelets that kept showing up in my Pinterest feed (http://cnscio.us/1KcBeqP, this link should work, contrarily to the one in my previous comment)! That way, you can still have a hair tie around your wrist, but it looks great!

I never thought I would recommend this thing, but I guess they grew on me…

  54. Jessica says...

Yes to the hair elastic! I swear the limited number of times I haven’t had one on my wrist I’ve really needed it :) But I agree, bangles are much more lovely!

  55. This totally reminds me of these hair tie bracelets that kept showing up in my Pinterest feed (http://cnscio.us/1o08ZkR)! That way, you can still have a hair tie around your wrist, but it looks great!

  56. I love the thin style, so elegant. I have a Cartier Love Bracelet that my fiancé gave me for Christmas after we found out we were having our first child together, and I have only taken it off twice – for the birth’s of our 2 daughters! I love it because of the meaning behind it, but also for the elegance. It’s always on my wrist, and it feels like the perfect piece that works with any ensemble without looking out of place. I’ll never part with it :)

  57. I’m more of a ring person and tend to leave my arms bare, but I like the thin option!

  58. Andrea says...

Simple and chic, I’m so inspired to get a set now.

  59. jill c. says...

my husband recently gave me a beautiful, thin gold bangle for our 10 year anniversary and then another one for my 40th birthday – they are a bit organic and ‘imperfect’ so to speak so they are each unique and so feminine – i love wearing them b/c they make me feel so special and yet are still so subtle.

  60. I felt the same way around Christmas! I asked for some bracelets so I can layer. I pretty much wear them every day now. It’s Alex and Ani silver initial bracelet and a bracelet from noonday collection. One was from my mom and the other from my mother in law. I have to admit, I feel little more adult when I wear them…

  61. Wendy says...

Eureka! I intentionally wore a hair elastic on my wrist the entire time I nursed my first child because I could never remember which side I needed to start on for her next meal. Now, with baby no. 2, I’ve been clipping a bobby pin to my bra. A dainty bangle is just what this scatterbrained mama needs!

But can I do gold if my rings are platinum? Hmm.

  62. My husband gave me a really beautiful Kate Spade gold bangle for my birthday one year. I wear it all the time!

  63. I’m definitely one of those people who wear a black elastic band around their wrists because you never know when you’re gonna put your hair up! But this year I have started wearing more jewellery and I even made quite a hefty purchase with a watch and a new bracelet!

    Kathy xx

  64. Jul says...

I totally broke myself of the hair tie-on-wrist habit because I hated how it looked in pictures! I now keep one in my wallet which I normally have on me at all times :)

& I am a total cuff sucker! cuffs >> bangles because you can bend them ever so slightly to fit your wrist perfectly & minimize the annoying movement when typing, etc. I have some beautiful thin cuffs that I’ve gotten at art festivals in different cities.

  65. Samantha says...

I’m usually wearing a Tous bracelet my bf gave me, but the hair elastic is often there too. Hair elastics are something that can make you look very un-pulled together so when I notice that I’m wearing it, I take it off. I got beige hair elastics the other day to kinda match my hair, and I noticed that their much less noticeable on my wrist. The golden bracelets are lovely, though!

  66. I love the idea of bangles and bracelets, but they drive me insane when I’m typing! So if I wear them to work (rarely) they end up tossed on my desk or in my purse anyway. Am I the only one?

    • Laura says...

Agreed I always get annoyed when I wear bangles to work at my desk job.

    • Stephanie says...

Definitely not the only one. I even gave up wearing a watch because that drove me crazy too!

    • Elisabeth says...

This is exactly what I do! I used to love bracelets when I was a classroom teacher, but now that I’m a graduate student and on my computer all day I never wear them. Or they live in the bottom of my bag.

    • Tiffany says...

SAME! But Fossil makes some with a latch, I have a tortoise one with leather and gold accents that I love. I have been thinking about treating myself to another for Valentines Day.

  67. I love the look of bangles but I have tiny wrists and most don’t look right :(
Also- then what do you do with the hair tie?! Can’t part with it!

    • Samantha says...

I understand your pain. My wrists are tiny, too, and it’s so hard to find bracelets that won’t slip out :(

  68. Lisa says...

Me too!!! And sometimes I find myself wearing one when my hair is out in a large curly afro that couldn’t be possibly contained on a whim…so sometimes mine is pointless…yet hilarious!

Now wouldn’t it be brilliant if they just made the hair elastics in gold… then it could be functional and beautiful.

  69. Celeste says...

When I was a teenager, my mom was getting rid of some gold and mother-of-pearl bangles. They are a set of five but I wear one a few times a week. I LOVE how a thin bangle looks on a lady’s wrist! It’s like the thin rings–they make your fingers look more sophisticated and dainty.

  70. Dominique says...

I’ve been wearing a black elastic on my wrist too, but I use it to keep track of which side I need to breastfeed on next.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

awww, that’s sweet. congratulations on your little one!

    • What a great idea! I’m a nursing mom to a little as well!

  71. But what will happen to the black hair elastic??? (Haha, I keep mine on for convenience unless it’s leaving an impression on my wrist…)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha not sure! hadn’t thought that far :) maybe my jeans pocket? or i could just not bring it everywhere i go forever and always? haha

    • Samantha says...

You can always keep one on your keychain :) That way you’ll always find it when you need it.

  72. Morgan says...

I’ve never been a big accessories gal, but I have been loving my http://www.mantraband.com that I received this Christmas. I wear “BE PRESENT.” Such a lovely reminder as a mom/wife/friend/human…put the phone down/don’t dwell on the past/worry about the future. It’s a beautiful bracelet and message.

  73. Laura C says...

“For the past ten, maybe twenty years, I’ve worn a black hair elastic on my wrist”–> EXACTLY THE SAME for me!!
15 years ago I “dated” a guy (it was a two year long story without official beginning), well, that guy found one of my black hair elastics and wore it on his wrist in the summertime when we were apart. We were NO officially dating, but he wore it as a sort of “engagement ring” to remember me. He told me that he had lost it one evening and he almost got crazy searching for it among the cushions.
I guess it would have been pretty romantic, if only he had wanted me officilly to be his girlfriend.
Well! That’s life and I’ll be wearing it til the end of times!
    xoxo

  74. Rebecca says...

I buy a packet of 25 almost every few months. How do I keep losing them when there’s so many? I feel there’s a pile of hair ties and missing socks in the Bermuda Triangle. But I found this cute way where you can wear both: http://www.mariashireen.com/collections/bittersweet

    • Ellen says...

      Wow, that is so clever!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that is so clever!

    • Emily says...

I was just looking to see if someone linked to this. While reading today’s post, I instantly thought of these which I had also just seen on Pinterest. Seems like a perfect solution.

    • Jess says...

Yes! Got the rose gold one for Christmas, life changer.

  75. Betty M says...

I wear 5 gold bangles all the time. 2 from my parents and the other 3 from my husband to mark the births of our three children. I love them.

  77. Eliza says...

Gorgeous options! I love unobtrusive gold bracelets but can rarely find them to fit my very small wrists.
