Who’s Your Doppelganger?

Who's Your Doppelganger?

Do you have a celebrity look-a-like? Through the years, I’ve gotten Amanda Peet, Hilary Swank and (from ages ago) figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. Alex has ranged from a young Warren Beatty to Seth Rogan.

“There is only so much genetic diversity to go around,” said Michael Sheehan, an assistant professor of neurobiology and behavior at Cornell University. “If you shuffle that deck of cards so many times, at some point, you get the same hand dealt to you twice.”

So, at dinner on Saturday night, we were in hysterics while talking about the boys: We’ve always thought that Toby resembles English model Agyness Deyn, and Alex brought up that Anton looks like a teeny tiny Michelle Williams. Can you see it? Right down to the hair flip! I’m still laughing.

Do you look like anyone? Do your little ones? I’d love to hear…

P.S. Anton’s first doppelganger and accidental twins.

  1. jajaja i laughed so hard when i saw Anton little face close to Michelle Williams. Lovely

  2. I get Emma Stone all of the time and occasionally Olivia Wilde. I used to get Denise Richards but thankfully that one has subsided as she has faded a bit from the limelight.

  3. Jennifer says...

My partner and I used to laugh about one of our twin boys, Miles. When he was an infant, he looked just like Winston Churchill.

  4. Nicole says...

Over the years, I’ve been told I look just like Katie Holmes. I’ve also been told Mila Kunis, Anne Hathaway (just once), and most recently, Emma Stone (just once – but I’m not a redhead).

    • Nicole- you and I might look similar bc I get Emma Stone all of the time!!

  5. Molly says...

Anton totally does look like Agyness Deyn! Growing up I was always told like I looked like some famous person or another. Sometimes I was flattered (Debbie Harry, Scarlett Johansson) and others I didn´t like so much (Leonardo DiCaprio, the youngest Hanson brother).

  6. I am told I resemble Amy Adams – I think it’s the red hair :)

  7. Love this creative post! I had to look up “young Diane Sawyer” when I’ve been told I look like her…I also get Kate Hudson and Carrie Underwood (whom I both think are beautiful!). I used to get Julia Stiles (profile and blonde hair/slim neck) and Renee Zellwegger (pre-plastic surgery) when I was in my teens.

  8. sara says...

Throughout my 20’s and 30’s. I was told consistently that I looked “Just Like”…..Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, Samantha Mathis, Matthew Broderick (!), Louie Anderson (!), and on and on and on (not to mention my sister, cousin, friend). Several times a week, and never the same person. I just figured I have a familiar face. It’s tapered off now into my 40’s.

    • Molly says...

I totally hear you! I got people like Debbie Harry, Jewel, Tea Leoni, etc. And I was frequently told things like, ¨You look exactly like my roommate from college.¨ Now, in my 30´s I don´t get those sort of comments so much.

  9. Joanna for all the years I’ve read your blog I absolutely think you look like Laura Main from Call The Midwife! Not sure if you get it in the U.S. but honestly she is your Doppelgänger through and through!!!

    • Sharol says...

Yes, Joanna does look a bit like her. We do get ‘Call The Midwife’ in the U.S. and its a Fantastic show!

  10. k.s. says...

I get Amanda Peet, Hilary Swank, and Anne Hathaway or quite funnily, you. Though I love those comparisons the most because in turn, they often spark the best conversations – our love of a series or an article that appears here – shared bond over Cup of Jo.

  11. Ang says...

My sister pointed out that i look like charlie in the old charlie and the chocolate factory movie. Unfortunately she was right – bowl cut and all! My husband gets all sorts of movie star comparisons but my favourite were the backstreet boy taunts he got from a soccer player on an opposing team! He was not impressed!

  12. I always get told I look like Gwyneth Paltrow. But it’s pretty evenly split between the people who believe I look like her and the ones who absolutely deny it. Who knows?

  13. erin says...

Julianna Margulies is what i have been told most, although i do not have her curls. She is gorgeous, so i will take that! Then just last night my sister told me i look like Kourtney Kardashian – i don’t know about that.

  14. Alexandra says...

I am always, and I mean ALWAYS, compared to Emma Stone. I think it’s mostly because of the red hair and big blue eyes, but I’ve won contests because of it which is cool. I also get the occasional Olivia Wilde, too, which I will gladly accept :)

    • Alice says...

      You lucky duck!

  15. Kristen Dunst. And Kate Winslet. I dont even get how the two of them look alike!
    Dont love it but yeah…

  16. Viktoria says...

I get Audrey Hepburn, Kiera Knightley and Natalie Portman quite frequently….I just don’t see it. I don’t think I could ever be as beautiful as they are

  17. Abby says...

    YOU are my sister-in-law’s doppelganger!!

  18. Kaitlyn says...

Mia Wasikovska– I get it ALL the time, by strangers!

  19. I get Anna Kendrick a lot. I don’t think I look anything like her, but I do think she’s beautiful so I’ll take it. My grandmother compares me to Katharine Hepburn, another reach, but one I’ll gladly accept.

  20. That Anton / Michelle Williams comparison is AMAZING!
I get Zooey Deschanel more than anything, big eyes and glasses and I even used to have bangs which sealed the deal. Back when Dawson’s Creek was around I used to get Katie Holmes.

  21. Jill Barbuto says...

Hilarious! I can see it :)

  22. When I was in middle school I got Lori Beth Denberg from All That. Believe it or not this was not flattering as a child.

  23. I’ve gotten Minnie Driver (when I was thinner lol)!

  24. I have heard Audrey Hepburn (whom I adore), one Sarah Jessica Parker (don’t see that resemblance), and many Tina Fey comments. I can see that. This past Halloween, I dressed up as Velma from Scooby-Doo. I just got my hair trimmed and my stylist curled my hair under (I usually straighten it) the day before, so even my hair was spot on. So, for at least Halloween, I was told that I looked just like Velma Dinkley too! :)

  25. J.D says...

So fun! I get Zooey Deschanel, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter. Someone stopped me on the streets once and asked for an autograph!

  26. Not so much celebrities, but I get mistaken for other people all the time. There was a period a few years back that once or twice a month someone would ask me if I was so-and-so’s cousin or if we’d met before, happening everywhere from my hometown in Ontario to the beach in Georgia. Unfortunately, it was always a case of mistaken identity and never a pick up line.

    • gk says...

I get this, too! In HS or college, people swore that they had seen me the night before at a dance or party or ___, but it was never me. I’ve concluded that I must look very normal :)

  27. Alyssa Leister says...

One year I was told that I look like Mia’s friend Lilly in Princess Diaries (much to my horror as I don’t think she’s terribly attractive). The next year I was told that I look like Anne Hathaway. So apparently I’ve covered that entire movie. :)

Mostly, I just look exactly like my mom. People think we are sisters. :)

  28. Bethany says...

I think it’s always interesting what people notice first in any face, like asking “Don’t they look like so-and-so?” and the reply is “I don’t see it” Because the first thing one person notices is the face shape and another the eye shape.. I get this from me and my 2 sisters, who people say we all look alike– or, more often, that my 2 sisters look alike, who are both long haired, have the same huge smile, and have lovely hourglass figures, but have very different facial features.. I, on the other hand, look much better with shorter hair and am long&lean. We all agree we look nothing alike! I’m sure we notice our differences before our similarities (or people just like an easy conversation opener ;) )

  29. I used to get Mischa Barton ALL THE TIME. And then one day, make-up-less on a plane, a lady told me I look like that hobbit from LOTR. Thanks. Haha.

  30. Rebekah says...

I’ve never been told I resemble anyone famous but my husband is regularly told that he looks like Aaron Rodgers. He’s a lot cuter than Aaron Rodgers, in my opinion ;-)

  31. Lena says...

Everytime I show someone Bryan Adams music video to the song “Heaven” they scream out loud. The girl in the video looks like me so much my own mother got confused. She got slightly darker and bigger hair (80’s after all), but the body language is scary spot on. I have not even found out what her name is? Does anyone know?

  32. I get told I look like Marion Cotillard- which is both incredibly flattering, and incredibly baffling… I don’t think I look anything like her! Still, she’s beautiful, so I’ll take it as a compliment…!

  33. Synnove says...

I get Audrey Hepburn and alexis blend alot!! My sister actually found a photo of Audrey Hepburn that looked so much like me that she nearly thought it was me..

  34. Liné Waterson says...

    Your boys are so cute!
I was told I look like Shailene Woodley, which I can see when she’s smiling or photographed from the side, but not so much when she keeps a straight face. (I also got Kendall Jenner when I wear my hair parted down the middle – but that I don’t see at all!)

  35. I always get Parker Posey, Jaime Lee Curtis and Rachel McAdams. My Husband is a serious double of Emile Hirsch, but sometimes looks like Jack Black with those eyebrows! A coworker even pinned him as a young Leo DiCaprio at one time! What a spread. lol. Our son totally reminds people of the little boy from Love Actually. Especially now he is a little older and his hair has started to lighten. We showed him a pic of that boy this Christmas and he said – oh me! Milo!

  36. Eve says...

For a while there, I was always talking to my husband about how our son looks like Toby — he’s a celebrity for us.

  37. Pamela says...

I get told I look just like my 25 year old – a huge compliment (for her, not so much!). Also, Catherine Keener which I love because she’s cool and laughs a lot
