An Ode to Stripes

Jeanne Damas

Trends may come and go (hello, fringe!), but stripes are the one thing we reach for over and over again. What is it about them that feels so good to wear? (I laughed at this Instagram photo.) I have a few tops in my closet that I’ve been wearing for almost a decade. Stripes feel fresh and easy, and look good even with your oldest faded jeans.

Below are a few styles we’re liking. Click or tap on the images, if you’d like…

Thoughts? Which would you wear?

P.S. Small gold earrings, and things I’ve worn eight million times.

This post speaks to my heart! I love stripes and my husband always laughs at me when I come home with *another* striped shirt….dress….pjs…. Can’t get enough!

Inspired by a post here about energy healing…I went to a psychic & Reiki healer at the end of last summer. It was fun and surprisingly revealing. But. She told me not to wear stripes anymore! Apparently they were ‘blocking’ my energy and sending a “stay away” signal. So now I just wear them very, very, selectively – like to meet my tax guy & stuff ;)

I love, love, love stripes. I couldn’t identify more with Miss Moss’ picture.
(I am fat, though. I know they don’t suit me, but there’s nothing I feel more comfortable in.)

I bought a mariniere from the company Petit Bateau (though do kids clothes, but for adults as well) which I wear CONSTANTLY. This is after years of buying substandard striped boatneck t shirts from gap etc. It was well worth paying more for and I always feel amazing when I wear it.

I have never heard of Everlane until this post, and I am in love! Just purchased 5 tops, & went back again & purchased a pair of sandals & handbag. Thank you for sharing!

  6. My mom is Danish so I wore A LOT of stripes growing up. I do find myself wearing stripes most days too. I have so many striped t-shirts and I can never stop myself from getting more. They always look fresh and make me feel cheerful.

  7. Andrea says...

Ages ago I had a striped boatneck from crew that I wore to death. I imagine you to be more often than not seen walking around Brooklyn in stripes!!

  8. Aimee says...

I love me some striped shirts! Wearing my favorite striped painter’s tee with gold buttons on the shoulder from j.crew this very instant!

  9. Jillian says...

    YES!

  10. Hope says...

I love stripes. I recently counted 13 striped tops and dresses in my closet! They’re all horizontally striped and I just say it makes everything look curvier, not fat.

  11. Patricia says...

Hi, my name is Patricia and I have a striped T addiction.

I had one striped T that I wore for at least 10 years … and it never wore out! Somehow, I can’t find it anymore. So I keep buying replacements, but it’s like trying to replace a beloved pet. Nothing else is quite right.

PS Admittedly I had a problem before my t went missing. Just keeping it honest here.

  12. Leah says...

I saw a blue and white jumpsuit at Madewell this week. I know it’s only a matter of time until it’s in my closet!

  13. Tai says...

Over the decades, I’ve grown to be a plus size, but stripes still look good! I love a good clingy striped dress–even if they’re horizontal stripes, somehow they trick the eye into making me look all hourglass-shaped, and it’s a beautiful thing! Stripes for the win!

  14. My friends have a joke that if I ever go missing and no one has seen me all day, they’re just going to tell the police that I was wearing a navy and white striped shirt, because…gotta go with the odds.

When I want to mix up my wardrobe a bit, I buy a shirt with red stripes, instead.

Stripes go with everything. Stripes ARE everything. Stripes forever.

  15. i’m so so drawn to stripes too. i have this one long sleeve navy + white striped top from h&m (!!!) that has lasted me way longer than expected and i love it

Whenever I go shopping with my mom she’ll pluck out every single striped shirt like it’s something she’s never seen before. And the inevitably go, “So cute, right?! With jeans!” Meanwhile her closet is chock full of stripes in every color. It’s hysterical.

  17. Gracie says...

First time commenting! I actually had to tell myself to stop buying stripe shirts the other day! My last were from J.Crew and I’m wearing it for my birthday in a couple days. Like others have said, they are just so classic and “French” and you can pair it up with pretty much anything else in your closet. Stripe lover for life.

Love stripes!!! I just wrote a blog post about this exact topic last week!!!! Did you know that Coco Chanel made the Breton shirt popular? xx yael

  19. Yes! I love stripes (and plaid). They’ve been my mainstays for years. I always feel incredibly pulled together in my striped shirt.

  20. meredith says...

I love the Everlane boxy tee, and pretty much everything else Everlane offers…..such a shame the company doesn’t offer anything over a size 10.

  21. Danielle D. says...

Ohhhhhh, LOVE this piece because I LOVE stripes. They are timeless. Most of my closet is stripes and solids. Polka dots are my second pattern. I like all but the last dress honestly, but that’s only because I don’t think I can pull that off.

  22. I didn’t know what all the Saint James Breton shirt hype was about (Duchess of Cambridge’s and Coco Chanel’s pick) until I finally got one last summer. Perfect cut. Perfect color. Goes with everything. I’ve been ruined.

  23. kadcat says...

Yes! I have this red and white tissue tee from one of those designer collections at Target that I bought ten years ago for a trip to Europe. I thought I would look so cool running around Italy in it (I was in my late teens, what can I say). The hem may be unraveling, and I may be shopping at better stores now for clothes, but I still have that shirt and wear it all the time. I’ll own that shirt until it actually falls apart, and then I’ll probably find a way to re-fashion it into something new.

Oh my goodness, I just realized I basically thought I would look like the first picture!!! Instead I probably looked like a teenager with acne in an educational tour group, but I felt like that woman, and that’s what really matters. ;)

  24. Alyssa says...

Love, love, love stripes. I’m wearing them now.

  25. Lisa says...

I also love stripes. I have bright red hair and tend to dress in only dark colours – black or dark blue/green/plum. Stripes make it more fun and still dark to satisfy my obsession. I also love the navy look so stripes are just right up my alley!

  26. I actually much prefer polka dots. I’m not a stripes person, I only got a striped top last year

  27. The slim stripe or the scoop neck, always a favourite of mine. When I cannot think what to wear and am in a hurry a fitted striped tee with a pair of jeans always lifts my spirits and keeps me looking good amongst all the French Mothers at the school gates!!!

  28. This is literally all I wear, stripy top and some jeans and converse. It’s ridiculous! Problem is, before my father passed away he commented that my boys looked awesome in stripes…so now they’re always wearing them too and we wind up looking like some weird escaped convict band of matchy match hooligans!!
    Still, can’t beat ’em!!

  29. Prudence says...

Stripes are so classic and always popular! I love stripes on my tops but dresses with stripes can be so cute too. Thanks for sharing your selections!

I have loved stripes and polka dots since junior high! I’m 43 now and you can find lots of both in my closet. :) I keep buying stripes and polka dots for my toddler daughter, too. I am so drawn to both patterns. Also, LOVE that peasant dress!

  31. Sarah says...

    Viva La Stripes!

Also, did anyone else notice all of the models have long (or no) bangs, parted in the middle? Is this the new trend?!?

  32. one of my great regrets (sadly true) is giving up on mending the tatters and tears of my ancient llbean long sleeved striped standby. I spend every waking shopping hour scouring racks for that perfect sturdy weight and classic fit. Everything I find feels cheap and flimsy in comparison…help!!!

  33. sarah says...

Fringe is out? Uh-oh. Wear what YOU like!!! For me, fringe is still fabulous!

  34. OoOoO! I love the red and navy cotton top. I would never take it off!

  35. Nicole says...

I haved always loved a good striped t-shirt, and I once had a boss tell me I was “In a stripes rut”! I remember the first one I bought when I was 15, that I saved up a whopping $40 for.

  36. So true! Stripes are so classic and so chic. I have far too many striped tees and I love my collection of striped dresses.

  37. Love strips! Sometimes I don’t like it with my stomach, but I’ve found so many shirts that are flattering regardless.

I showed my husband the headline and he said ‘see, you two should be best friends!’

  39. Kelsey says...

It’s so true! I typically always gravitate towards buying stripes. It’s just classic.

  40. Kate says...

Wearing striped shirts and dresses and shopping for striped shirts and dresses is a constant in my life–it’s like breathing :) There is something so fresh and classic about them. I can wear them everywhere, to nearly every occasion, and they always feel like I picked the most perfect thing.

Also, this is related but random: I remember reading a post on Cup of Jo about a couple who got married at City Hall and the bride wore a striped shirt and overalls. And I remember thinking, “You can do anything in a striped shirt. I could totally get married in a striped shirt!” :D

  41. katie says...

YEA! What’s up with that? How come stripes are always, always the right choice? Except when you wear a striped sweater with a striped dress over striped tights – that’s not the right choice.

  42. Can I wear all of them? I love stripes! And I love maintaining a classic closet where my clothes never go out of style. And stripes are definitely one of the few patterns that stick around.

  43. STRIPES ARE MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!

  44. Love love the striped dresses

  45. Having wide shoulders as I do, I’ve stayed away from stripes pretty much all my life…until I started reading your posts on striped tees! You’ve pretty much converted me! My latest striped tee arrived in the post yesterday!

  46. The Boxy tee for everyday wear but I do love the Peasant dress!

  47. Looove stripes. Totally have a problem. I really like what Jcrew wrote in their latest catalog: that they will never, ever give up on their stripes love they are known for.

PS that shopbop muscle tank color are exactly like Jcrew’s striped T I had from a couple seasons ago..
