Psst, Check Your Inbox…

Psst, Check Your Inbox...

When I first started blogging, I was going through a breakup and simply needed a distraction. I figured I’d write it for a few months after work in the evenings, until I got back on my feet.

Now, almost 9 years later (!), Cup of Jo has turned into my full-time job. Now we have a staff of three, and I’ve learned so much about how to run a site, the good and really hard parts of running your own business, how to manage a team, and knocking on wood that people will continue to come read posts and share thoughts and stories of their own.

Looking back, old posts can seem so funny and random. Here are a few gems:

My brother drinking coffee
Moose are dorks
How I saw Malcolm Gladwell once
When Alex and I tried to see who could run faster

Anyway, I wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who reads the site, either every day or once in a while, and for sharing your stories and thoughts in the comments. Reading the comments is my favorite part of running the blog — I’ve been continually blown away by how smart, funny and all-around amazing everyone is.

And, finally, some news! We are starting a weekly email newsletter. You can sign up here, if you’d like, and the first one goes out today! I’m really excited for a new way to connect. We’ll be sharing posts from the site, as well as jokes, fun facts, wishlists and extra stuff. You can also write back to me directly if you’d like, since it’s a two-way email.

Thank you so much for everything, as always! Love, Joannaxoxo

  1. Thanks for sharing! It’s definitely fine to reflect back and see how much we change and (hopefully) evolve in our endeavors :)

  2. J says...

I love your blog – I can’t remember how i came across it but now its a staple. Am signing up for the newsletter now.
    From London with love x

  3. I’ve been reading your blog for YEARS. Like back when you wrote for the Glamour relationship blog. Whenever I pop in here it’s like visiting an old friend. I am glad that after nine years you’re still around :)

  4. I did wonder what your short and sweet “Hi” was all about! I haven’t been following your blog for as long as it’s been around, but I’m so happy I found it as it reminds me that GREAT things take time and patience. I love how relaxed and down to earth your posts are and always look forward to the next one. Congrats on your first newsletter – looking forward to always being caught up!

  5. I was SO excited when I saw an email from you in my inbox! Lol! I’ve been reading daily for years and absolutely LOVE where you’ve taken the blog, the way you incorporate the sponsored posts so breezily and how carefully you’ve selected amazing contributors! Keep up the great work Joanna and team! Xo

  6. Has anyone else mentioned that you look just like Toby in those running photos? (or that Toby looks just like you?). Amazing to see… so cute. Also love seeing what we were wearing however many years ago!

  7. Kate says...

So excited for this! I’ve been reading for what feels like forever, but in that really great way :)

  8. janice says...

please edit my last sentence… oops! “we all need to express the giddy glee depicted in that clip in happy moments” so we can endure these tragic ones.

  9. Lindsay says...

I’ve seen Malcolm Gladwell three times in the past two years! (Once riding his bike along the Hudson, once in a bookstore, and once walking down the street in Soho.) I think it’s a rite of passage for New Yorkers.

  10. janice says...

… i have followed your blog for a long while now. great to watch you and your family grow and thrive in NYC. i must say the Seinfeld clip that played after I signed up for your email was precious…. LOVE it! Given all the tragedy we are witnessing in Paris right now… we all need to express the giddy glee that is depicted in that image. .. thank you for that !

  11. Yay! I read your blog every week and love it. Every Saturday morning with my cup of tea (or two) I go over the weeks content and the round up. Then my friend and I talk about it during the week “oh did you read about bla” and we chat about it. Thank you x

  12. I loved the gif… but mailchimp was my favorite simply because it reminded me of Serial and all those Serial parodies hah!

  13. Totally just signed up and immediately knew this would be tons of fun when that Sienfeld gif popped up! Yes!

  14. Lauren says...

I’ve been reading Cup of Jo since before you were married. It was my favorite blog then and still is. Thank you for your daily dose of shine.

  15. Sarah says...

That GIF that you have after joining the email list is the cutest surprise I think I’ve ever seen! You guys are awesome. Makes me excited to have joined — “This is going to be fun!”

  16. Ann Black says...

Congrats on your awesome blog! Love to read!

  17. Marie says...

Hey Joanna, I’ve stumbled on your blog 6 years ago when I was pregnant of my first daughter. I was looking for distraction but also for motherhood advice and talks ( having no other friends being mother or wanting to be)… When you became pregnant with Toby shortly after it was like a sign, and I felt less alone… I followed you since then, and a cup of jo is the only blog I kept reading all those years. Tx for bringing all that amazing content . I always refer your blog to the new mothers around me- and there are more and more, it must be the thirties … ;)

  18. Emily Raffield says...

yay !! can’t wait to see these in my inbox! cheers!

  19. Elissa says...

I read your blog daily when I was living in Manhattan – and do the same now that I’m in Toronto just to keep in touch with my city :) Thank you for writing!

  20. Samantha says...

I remember the post about Alex and yours first date, so I’ve been reading since before that. And Toby is 5 already! and Anton is 2! Time flies, man. I’ll be 22 in 2 days, so I was a teen when I started reading Cup of Jo, haha. I love reading the comments, too! I preffer to read a post after a few other people have already commented, and don’t settle on my opinion until I read the other reader’s perspective on the subject. I’ve learned a lot! Thanks for keeping on with the blog :) I hope to see you publishing the Motherhood Around The World book, I know for sure it’ll be a NYT Best Seller (I recommend the MATW posts to everyone I know, it’s so good!).

  21. 1. I’m looking forward to the newsletter!

    2. Those old posts you linked to are too funny.

    3. Your picture is so pretty! You look really happy and content. Is that your office space? Maybe you could give us a “tour” someday!

  22. Karolyn says...

I’m always impressed by the quantity and quality of the content you and your team create– I can’t believe you’re going to be doing even more! Can’t wait to read the newsletter.

  23. Emilia says...

  27. Pnid says...

Hi Joanna, way to go and here is to a great future for Cup of Jo!! Quick question: do you envisage sharing the email addresses with other companies (sponsors, partners etc) down the road? Asking because I would love to sign up but I want to avoid the flood of random and annoying email traffic !

  28. Melissa says...

  35. Nicole says...

I have been reading your blog every day since I clicked the link to it on a Glamour Magazine “Relationship Blog” post you had written. I visited New York last month for the first time (I’m live in Seattle, but originally from a small in Washington), and my style fit right in. I know it’s from reading your style advice for all these years that I didn’t stick out as a country bumpkin:) Thank you so much for all the intelligent and witty posts the past 9 years, they have been a treat for me to read every day.

  36. I live in S.Korea. It’s been like more than seven years to read your blog! And it’s my first comment to leave your blog. haha. I read your blog every day and always feel happy to read many interesting stories in USA and around the world! I will move to D.C. next year, and your blog is really helpful to me to understand cultural things too. Thank you always!

Joanna, I discovered blogs in college (back before your boys were born!) and read so many in the beginning, from cooking and DIY to weddings and fashion! Years later I’ve narrowed it down to just a few favorites and yours has remained my #1! To me, your blog is thought-provoking, inspiring, fun, and REAL all wrapped up into one site. It’s feel-good, but even more than that, it’s feel-understood! Reading your posts is such a treat each day, so thank you for putting it out there in the internet world for us all to enjoy. And thank your ex-boyfriend from all of us readers ;) Looking forward to your newsletter. Warm wishes, from California!

  41. I’ve loved your blog ever since learning about it from my friend on a study abroad in Italy in 2011! Of course I wished then that I could track down archived copies of Bene :) and it has continued to be a favorite for the years since then. Loved the first edition of your newsletter! xo.

  42. Signed up!😊 And yes this is gonna be fun! Lol That GIF is the best. This is why I read your blog daily, Joanna. Love your sense of humor and of course, you’re 100% real and it comes out in all your posts.
I’ve been a Cup of Jo reader for
    a little over 2 years and I’m
    here for the long haul!
Thanks for all that you do!
    Love from Toronto😊

  43. Natalie says...

I read your blog every day – love love love it! I’m doing my own little happy dance here in Atlanta to celebrate. Amazing gif selection! ;)

  44. I remember you were one of the first blogs I started to read when blogs were still starting to become a thing. You are still my favorite blog to check on a daily basis. I always feel like I’ve had a warm hug afterwards.

  45. Thank you!!! My dear friend sent me the link one day and now its a ritual for me that I take a break at my desk and discover something new or just have a moment to myself and look at beautiful things. I love the perfect mix of content and thank you!!!

  46. Ali says...

Joanna, this is such a good news. Your blog is my favorite one to read, everyday… It covers so many subjects, and i love the simple yet special way you write how you come across some questions. It often makes me feel close to you even though I’m in a very different part of my life right now. (I just turned 26, just graduated from an art history master, and have no children)
Thank you for all your hard work. It is much appreciated.
    Good luck from Brussels
    Ali

  47. Judith says...

Awesome idea, I immediately signed up. I’ve been reading your blog for years now, and even though i’m a bit younger than you are (I’m 27) and in a totally different phase of my life (just graduated, no children and recently single), your blog is one of my favorites. Reading it makes me feel so ‘at home’ and happy and you seem like a lovely person. I’m so happy your blog is doing well!

  48. Anna says...

I started reading your blog when you first met Alex (!!!). I was hooked and have check it religiously ever since that day. I’ve never commented but today I just want to say thank you for keeping your blog genuine, inspiring, thought-provoking and witty. It’s such a refreshing read especially now that there are so many mehhh blogs out there. P.S. You convinced me to book a trip to Jake’s Hotel in Jamaica this February!

  49. 400mlBakery says...

Cup of Jo is the ONLY place I ever read comments! Cheers and here’s to 99 more years. XOXO

I’ve learned so much and have widen my horizons on so many things just from reading your stories. 57. Ashley H. says...

Love this! You are so wonderful with words and I really enjoy reading about what you have found on the internet. It’s also not a Friday unless I get the chance to read your “Have a Lovely Weekend” post. I look forward to receiving your weekly email!

  58. Madie says...

Just wanted to say that little Seinfeld gif made my morning! So perfect.

  59. Jenn says...

  63. Jenn P. says...

So exciting (as perfectly summed up by the gif after signing up)!

I’ve been a loyal reader of the blog for about 6-7 years now. I’ve fallen in and out of other blogs but yours is the one I’ve continued to keep in my daily routine. I’ve looked to it for relationship advice, recipes, vacation ideas, makeup purchases, etc. It’s been such a pleasure to see it grow with the content and the addition of new voices – who I also love!

Thank you for continuing to add brightness to my days, Joanna. Looking forward to the next chapter!

    Jenn

  64. These are just gold! I cringe/cry/laugh looking back on my old instagram posts of my decals – but it’s a great encouragement to see progress and how far we’ve all come over the years. Just loved watching your blog develop and grow Jo.

  66. Thank you Joanna for creating such a positive, welcoming and friendly community! Checking Cup of Jo is the best part of my work day :) Cant wait to now read your newsletter! Keep doing what you’re doing Joanna and team!!!! xoxo

  67. Jo says...

Congrats on your newsletter launch, Joanna! I love seeing how your blog has been growing. Kudos to you and your lovely Cup of Jo team!

I’m a long time reader… I’ve been reading your blog daily since the summer of 2007! :-) I stumbled upon your blog then while planning my wedding and looking up furniture (how random!)…

Yes, on some days, I feel like we’ve met/we’re totally friends! :o)

  68. You are such an inspiration to me. Your blogging style keeps me coming back every single morning! thank you!

  69. Yes to a newsletter! I’ll take a second cup of jo any day of the week :)

This is, far and away, my favorite blog. Your posts — and their comment sections — read like a conversation among friends. It’s become a bit of an inside joke with my boyfriend how often I say, “Cup of Jo said…” as though I am speaking of a friend :)

    • Sarah says...

I feel the same. I often remark to my husband “Joanna Goddard says…” ;)

I could go on and gush, but I’ll leave it at that.

      Much love to you, Joanna!

    • Lauren E. says...

Me too! And it baffles me why I’ve had to tell certain people about the blog more than once. Um, I told you that you should be reading this. I don’t understand why you’re not…

  70. Kelly says...

So excited for the newsletter! A quick question. Do you know where the print behind you in the photo that starts with the words “please” is from? Thanks!

  71. Marybeth says...

I love your blog so much, Joanna. My college friends and I have been followers since before Toby was born, and I now have my boyfriend reading it! I always appreciate the balance of fun and beautiful things with a lot of sincerity and honesty about real life. Thank you for this wonderful blog, and I think I speak for many when I say how excited I am for the newsletter!

  72. Julienne says...

I love this blog so much–I’ve been completely addicted since I hit the “random blog” button and it brought me to Cup of Jo–seven years ago!!!

It’s been a pleasure to watch the blog change over the years, mainly because it hasn’t lost its original quirky tone. I am still not sure about the sponsored posts, but there’s enough honesty and real ingenuity to the site as a whole that I don’t mind them.

All in all–congrats on making such a success of the site, Joanna. Can’t wait for the newsletter.

  73. Katie says...

Favorite blog on the internet!! Thanks Joanna for all you do :)

  74. Gabrielle says...

I’ve been following your blog since maybe 2010-2011, and have grown to appreciate the posts more and more. I agree with many others, that this blog stands out as being genuine and authentic. Your posts range across diverse topics and contain content for every type of reader.
I’m 26, in graduate school in Paris, but I enjoy reading your endearing posts on motherhood and family. I greatly appreciate the addition of Caroline and her thoughtful, funny posts on dating&heartbreak.

I look forward to the weekly newsletter, as I already use your blog as a source of (intelligent!) procrastination. Keep up the fantastic work :)

  75. Alexandra says...

I’ve been reading your blog for years now and like many other people have said, it’s the first thing I check every morning when getting into work and come back multiple times throughout the day to check for new posts. I love all the variety and how real and down to earth you are! I’ve read so many books, tried so many new beauty products, and discovered so many new things all from your posts. Also having a young son I can relate to so much of what you write about. Congrats on the launch of your newsletter!

  76. I literally unsubscribed from every email list yesterday! What are you doing to me?!?!

    P.S. – I totally signed up, can’t to read it :)

  77. Kate says...

    that seinfeld gif, the best!

  78. Emily says...

I have been a daily reader of Cup of Jo since the beginning… I just want to say that I am so happy that you continue to post. When my life gets especially frantic, I love to indulge in a Cup of Jo post (past or present) and I cannot tell you how much I look forward to those little breaks during the day — especially Friday’s. You have been so inspirational in my life and I have tried SOOO many products and ideas because of your suggestions. I am thrilled that you’ve now added a newsletter — just one more thing to look forward to during the day. Best wishes for continued success. <3

  79. Allegra Liu says...

Hi Joanna, just signed up and am looking forward to the newsletter. Just wanted to tell you that I love the blog. I follow other style/fashion blogs but yours is one of my favorites because of the mix of style, lifestyle, parenting content and women’s (or really people’s) issues. As a working mother with youngish kids (8.5 and 5 hrs) I really appreciate the diversity of posts that I can relate to and are fun to read. I especially enjoy the surprising things about parenting in other countries guest posts. Keep up the good work!

  80. Stephanie says...

    Excellent Seinfeld gif.

  81. Alyssa says...

    Hi Joanna,

I’ve been following your blog since you and Alex were dating! Actually, yours was the first blog that I ever started reading. I’ve gained and lost interest in many blogs over the years, but yours stood the test of time. I love the variety of your posts, especially Motherhood Around the World and Beauty Uniform. I also love seeing your adorable kiddos grow up and reading about your journey raising them in a big city. Thanks for 9 great years…here’s to 20 more!

  82. Georgia says...

Hi Joanna! I just wanted to say that I love your blog so much, especially your fashion and beauty posts. I live in LA and rarely ever make it to the east coast, so it’s always fun to hear about what people are wearing in NYC! Even if it’s rarely cold enough here for the winter looks. :)

Anyways I would love to see more style/makeup recommendations in your newsletter! You have a great eye. Keep ’em coming!

    <3

  83. Jenn says...

Cup of Jo is the first blog I read every morning and after 6 years of reading, I still look forward to it every day! There is a such a large spectrum of interesting content, but the Motherhood Around the World Series is simply perfect!! Fingers crossed for another round soon:)

  84. Lindsay says...

The Seinfeld gif when you sign up is an awesome touch!

  85. I started reading back when I was in college I think. It was when you were writing for the glamour.com smitten blog! Feels like just yesterday!

  86. Dear Jo and team,

Just wanted to say I’m so excited to read the first newsletter, I think its a fantastic idea. I’ve been a reader for a few years, but have never commented because I never really know what to say! The fact that you’ve said it this post that reading comments is one of your favourite parts about having a blog made me just have a word with myself to say something, ANYTHING, even if its just a thank you.

So that’s what this is! A thank you for creating such a positive platform online, thank you for wanting to make that platform even more accessible, and thank you for continuing to taking me to different corners of the internet (‘Have a lovely weekend’ posts have always been a fave of mine!) and my mind.

    Keep up the great work!

    Emily

  87. newsletters are the new black.

  88. Just signed up! That gif from Seinfeld had me laughing out loud. Thank you, I needed a laugh today :)

  89. Lea says...

Dear Jo and the Cup of Jo Team,

Just wanted to echo what all the other readers have been saying. I look forward to reading your blog every single day. It really has become a cosy and happy time during everyday life. I sheepishly have to admit to refreshing the page several times a day just to see if anything new has been posted :) (I live several hours ahead of you guys).

Lots of love, thanks and here’s to another 9 years!

  90. Erin says...

Congrats. I love your blog. I have referred it to so many people. I have been at home with my kids for 6 1/2 years and it has always been a daily highlight! I’m now going back to work full time and will still keep reading and look forward to the weekly newsletter! XO Erin

  91. Sasha says...

I’ve started reading your blog around the time you got engaged. What I like is how it evolves with your life, i.e., going from wedding posts to pregnancy and motherhood. I imagine many readers are going through some similar transformations themselves, and you don’t get that from reading a glossy mag where the writing is eternally aimed at twenty-somethings.

  92. Katia says...

cupofjo is one of the best things on the internet! Thanks for all the hard work – it’s the first thing I read in the morning and every time I ask for blog recommendations, it’s “so, do you read anything that’s as good as cupofjo?”

  93. Echoing all the sentiments above: your blog is one-of-a-kind. I look forward to checking it about five times a week. I am always amazed at how engaging you make your sponsored content; even though it definitely feels like and obviously is a brand-backed post, you bring in something relatable and interesting that gets your readers talking. I draw so much inspiration and enjoyment from you and your staff’s work. And I am really pumped about this newsletter. GOOP’s got nothing on you.

  94. Daniela says...

    Dear Jo,
I follow your blog almost from the start. Many of the events of your life coincided with mine, with a time difference, of course. Being married and having children, but keep the essence of ourselves valuing the change and the improvement of them is incredible! Well, I am a nutritionist, an expert on kidney disease and dialysis diet. I am a “gaúcha”, that means a brazilian from the south. “Cup of Jo” tells us about people, no matter our culture. I would say more, but my English is not very good. I’d rather read than write.
This blog makes my days more beautiful and gives me inspiration and strength often. Thanks.

  95. Awww, yay/congrats/how exciting! <3
Love ya, & your fabulous blog.

  96. Kristina says...

Thank you so much for your excellent, inspiring and thoughtful work, to the three of you! Since I have to finally REALLY focus on writing my dissertation for the next few months, I have cut out Facebook, instagram and other rabbit-hole-dangers for the time being. My only online-treat is now to read your blog which I always look forward to towards the end of my work day (since I am in Berlin and a few hours ahead of you…). xoxo

  97. Leah says...

Congrats on the launch of your newsletter, Jo! And gorgeous pic of you above. xo

  98. Julia says...

As everyone else has said, your blog is simply the best (have been reading forever and it only gets better…so many blogs lose their steam, I don’t know how you do it!) and I am so looking forward to the newsletter! Also – I laughed when I saw the MailChimp logo in the confirmation email…had to read it in that Eastern European girl’s voice from the ad “Mail…Cimp?”

  99. Congrats on nine years, Joanna :-) I’ve been visiting your site for a couple of years now and I always find useful, fun and interesting tidbits. Keep it up, love it!

congratulations on your new endeavor. looking forward to it. i too am so grateful for all of your posts! i’ve been reading since 2008 or 2009 almost every day, and during crazy wonderful times of getting married, having babies, working and being so busy, when i have a hard time being connected to my friends and family in real life, i always have an opportunity to find so much warmth, compassion, intellectual stimulation, realness, helpful suggestions, new things to learn about, and everything good, here. my husband no longer raises his eyebrows at me when i tell him about complete internet strangers who i talk about like they are my beloved lifelong friends. you are a wonderful journalist and leading a great team of people and we all find joy here. thank you so much.

  101. You even included the Happy Seinfeld dance gif! <3

  102. Mollie Hammond says...

I’ve been reading your blog for a few years now but have never commented. I check everyday- actually, multiple times per day- to see if new content has been posted and I get SO excited whenever there is something new to read. There are so many voices on the internet, many of them talking loudly (and obnoxiously) about themselves. But your voice is different. One of the reasons I love your blog so much is because your voice is so real and genuine. You share so much with readers- about yourself, your lovely family, your great fashion sense, life tips, etc. But you never sound self-satisfied or arrogant. You sound like an awesome lady who admits her flaws who I would want to hang out with, someone I actually love receiving advice from. So I want to thank you for giving me such a wonderfully positive place to go online, and something to look forward to everyday.
    -Mollie

  103. I’ve been reading your blog for at least 7 years. This is the only one that I’m always interested in.
Keep up the great work ladies, I look forward to my weekly delivery!

  104. Congrats on your first newsletter…I got it! Can’t wait to see next week’s xo

  105. Rosemarie says...

I love your site! I have gone through and read old posts, and I do wonder if the My Balance, Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen is complete? It seems very short? I really like that series and would love more insight from her if there is more!

  106. I’ve been a fan of Cup of Jo since day one! Congrats on everything!

PS- I’ve signed up for the newsletter! :)

  108. Joanna, I just received your first newsletter. It’s great, keep up the great work! I love reading your blog.

  109. Darcy says...

Thank you so much for doing what you do, Joanna! I’m launching my first *Big Girl* blog this winter after years of minor projects and you are a major inspiration! I am such a big fan. When I share something new with my roommates it’s totally standard for them to ask, “Is this from Cup of Jo?” Congratulations on your continued success with the blog. Cheers!

    • Katy says...

My husband says the same thing, “Is this from that blog you read all the time?’ He also sneaks a peak sometimes b/c he doesn’t like to always hear cool things from me, his wife. :) He wants to feel cool, too.

  110. Roselyn says...

I’ve followed you almost every day (I’ll try to have a life one day) from my college days to getting engaged to being married—and I’ve loved making your blog part of my daily routine!! It’s such a great morning break to find encouragement/a good laugh/something to consider. Plus, I (an introvert) always get great conversation material for the day!

The best part was meeting you (!!) when I was one of the contenders for those sweet eyeglasses–and I’m still rocking my green pair! You were as fun and mellow just as I had imagined :)

Thank you for making this blog–for helping all of us unite in good times, for giving us ten minutes of sanity a day, and for encouraging me to be a better person/woman/NYer each day, whether by though-provoking posts, fashion, humor, or wisdom. You absolutely rock!!

  111. I’m glad to see I wasn’t the only person who felt like a caveman trying to sign up for the newsletter. I kept hitting the button! lol. It ended up working for me.

So love this blog. I feel kind of weird bringing it up in conversations though. I’m constantly saying “This blog I love…” then bringing up something relevant that you posted about. Kind of makes me sound like all I do is sit around and read blogs all day. I have toyed with the idea of just referring to the blog as a friend who told me something once, but then I would sound crazy if someone realized I was referring to a blog! Has anyone come up with a solution for this? lol

  112. KSullivan says...

Thank you, Joanna! I’ve been reading your blog since 2005, on a pretty regular basis. I was living in Germany at the time, doing work I didn’t love, and your blog did a lot to abate work misery & homesickness (I moved to China in 2008 & there were days there where your blog was the best snack on uber polluted afternoons!). My favorite post was the one where you shared the pic of the bend in the Grand Canyon, and the trick for managing anxiety & just keeping sh*t in perspective. I teach 8th grade English now (and I LOOOOOOVE IT!) and sometimes, before a big test, I’ll show that image to help students relax & remember how bright & capable they are :) I am so glad you have chosen to write & publish this way – it’s generous, thoughtful, beautiful, and has made many a day shine more brightly!

I started reading when Toby was an itty bitty baby.
I can’t tell you how many books I’ve read on your recommendation. Thank you.

Dude, the photos of you and Alex running on the beach. Hilarious.

This blog has introduced me to so many new points of view, websites, and products over the years! When I first discovered A Cup of Jo back in 2007, I was living in Japan, not sure about what to do with my life. I now live in the U.S., have gotten married, and just gave birth to our fist son 2 weeks ago. So much has changed in my life since I first came across this blog, but it’s still my most favorite. Thank you for creating such a wonderful community.

  116. Elizabeth says...

As a daily reader, I can’t WAIT for the newsletter! Congrats on your continued success! xoxo

  117. Josephine says...

Hi Joanna, I discovered your blog from when you used to write for glamour.com. At that time I was in an abusive relationship that lasted 4 years, and glamour served as this girly, glamorous oasis from my very not-glamorous daily life. My ex was very jealous and controlling, and he never wanted me to look better than him (so I wasn’t allowed to look good, period). Add to that the fact that we were always broke (he was a compulsive spender) so I never got to buy myself any clothes… Also for awhile our water was turned off so I couldn’t shower often… I was a mess. But Glamour.com was an oasis that I would check at work (i.e. when he wasn’t around).
Now Cup of Jo has replaced Glamour.com for me… it just seems more well-rounded and interesting.

    • Josephine says...

But glamour.com will always be dear to me because of that period in my life. Anyway your blog has history to me. You really impact people’s lives.

  118. Emily says...

SO excited about this. I’ve been reading off and on since 2009, but have been reading daily for the last several months, since rediscovering your site! It really is incredible what you’ve created. I’m especially impressed that you’ve found team members who don’t dilute your blog’s voice, but add new perspectives that make sense in the context of your blog. It’s a testament to your impeccable taste and (seemingly) unwavering vision that I look forward to Caroline’s posts as much as I do yours! Above all, I’m addicted to the shimmering, beautiful, imperfect humanity that emanates from each and every post. Thanks for always striving for authenticity.

Can’t wait to see what goodies your newsletter brings to my inbox.

  119. Karelys says...

I always love the updates on Nick. I wish I could be friends with him.
And yes, I remember when I first fell in love with Cup of Jo and browsed all past post I stumbled on the one about the Americano.
    It cracked me up.
I was newish in The States. So the next morning I bought an Americano. Did not like it. So I drank it until I loved it.

  120. Kimberley says...

This is my first comment here, although I’ve been reading your lovely blog for a little while now and am so excited to receive your newsletter! I thought it was about time I sent a little ‘hello!’ from me over here in England and told you how inspiring your blog is! Every time I check my Bloglovin’ feed I am always secretly hoping you’ve posted something new for me to read! And although I don’t have children (yet! Someday, I hope!), your posts about your family are my favourite – I find myself making mental notes of cute little things you’ve done with your children so that maybe one day I can do the same! x

  121. I love your blog! I aspire to be like you when I grow up;) Thank you for sharing your humor, your impeccable style and eye for design as well as your family with us!

  122. J.D says...

I’ve been reading your blog for years! You had just gotten married. It seems like yesterday :) I’m only 26 and I don’t have kids yet but I always find a lot of funny, inspiring and relatable posts anyway (I love Caroline’s writing voice!).

  123. keszter says...

So exciting! When I saw the little box for signing up, my first thought was: is there a Cup of Jo newsletter that I wasn’t subscribed to?! no way. how could I miss that? phew… thank god! Just signed up now :) Looking forward to the first one.

  124. I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now, and as a new blogger I am always inspired by your content! Along with the fun pieces and beautiful imagery, you post thought provoking pieces as well. A wonderful blog, indeed!

    xoxo http://www.touchofcurl.com

  125. Jody says...

Huge fan of you and your team here! I’m very happy to see this newsletter added to the fun :)

  126. Stephanie Siefert says...

Signed up immediately of course! Yours is one of the only blogs I have consistently read for years . I’ve been reading since before you (and I) had kids and I feel like we share similar life paths. I’ve enjoyed following your stories and it’s been a source of comfort, humor, and a wonderful way to take a break when I’m at my desk at work.

Funny story – I was in NYC a few years ago for my grandfather’s funeral and my family and I decided to take a break from the sadness and enjoy an afternoon in the city. We were driving around the Village and I actually saw you walking! It was so funny because earlier I thought to myself, “I know Joanna lives around here, wouldn’t it be funny if I saw her?” You looked so put together – straight out of a post from your blog. Anyways, I didn’t scream “Hi” because that probably would have been weird/stalkerish but I had to tell you the story years later!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh, that is so funny! What a small world. I would have loved to say hi :)

  127. So excited for the newsletter! It will definitely be one of my favorite parts of the week, getting to open it and find something new!

  128. Awads says...

Is there a link to sign up? I want the newsletter!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

You can sign up on the top right-hand side of the blog, or using the sign-up widget at the bottom of the post (where it says “brighten up your inbox”). Hope that helps!!

  129. Nadine says...

Signed up! Aloha from Germany, love your blog!!! xox Nadine

  130. Your blog is among my top favorites that I check every morning. Joanna, your blog has depth…something that many other lifestyle blogs are lacking. You never just post yourself in a random outfit from your closet with links to where to buy something…ugh. I have had enough of that.
I teach English at the middle school level and will often use your links, articles, and videos to show the kids and incorporate into my lessons. I have sent may of Caroline’s posts to my girlfriends too. You do a bang up job without overshooting the target; you never over-share, under-share, or gloat. I cannot wait to receive your newsletter!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

That is so sweet. Your comment completely made my day. Thank you so much. xoxo

  131. Veronique says...

I’ve been reading this blog for over 6 years now, and it is still my go-to blog for just about EVERYTHING… it (ALWAYS) has great content, interesting perspectives and just an overall feel good vibe. Kudos!

  132. Wendy Lee says...

Great news! This will brighten up my boring work day! ;)

  133. I’ve been reading an embarrassingly long time. Since… early 2008 at least. Loving every second of it! You’ve always felt like a long lost friend. Can’t wait to see what the next 9 years hold! xoxo

    • Oh boy, this prompted me to go back in time and find the first time you posted one of my pieces of work on your Friday round-up. It made my year, honestly! http://cupofjo.com/2010/03/have-an-adventurous-weekend-5/

I was the creator of the “Funny Cafe Sign”, haha. Such a walk down memory lane. Thanks for the trip!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      That’s awesome. I’m so glad.

And the blogging world has changed so much since then! It’s so funny to read back on old posts sometimes. I wrote a whole one about a party we had when my old roommate got two kittens.

  134. I’ve been a longtime reader as well and look forward to visiting every morning. As a blogger, you’re a huge role model for me and I’m constantly looking to your site for inspiration. So if anything else, thank you for your consistency and creativity! So excited about the newsletter!

  135. Elizabeth says...

Is there a way to know if your email was added to the mailing list? I keep clicking the send button but nothing happens.

(Can you tell how excited I am about receiving more Cup of Jo news? Don’t want to miss a thing!)

    • clare says...

This same thing is happening to me. I hope I’m signed up!

  136. Anne says...

I’ve been reading this blog for almost three years at this point. I probably shouldn’t admit how many times I refresh the page daily waiting for a new post :) It feels sort of like a friendship at this point. It’s been a reliable source of inspiration, wish lists, style tips, yummy recipes, and solid advice. I’ve turned here to seek comfort and to brighten my day and for more mundane quests (like what gifts to give my new niece or what brand of dry shampoo to try). Thank you for putting the hard work and soul into creating this special corner of the internet. I look forward to reading it each day and seeing what lies ahead.

    Best,
    Anne

  137. Shawn says...

Love your blog! Your Friday’s post has taken me to places that I would never have found on my own and I feel more worldly and educated because of it! So thanks and can’t wait to read the first newsletter!

    • Monika says...

I feel the same way. Always looking forward to that!

  138. Giulia says...

    Dear Joanna,

I have only got to know your blog last year, but (after quickly catching up on years of past posts) I love it so much. It feels so real, and I appreciate that you have managed to keep it this way after years of it, I can think of a handful of blogger that did not manage to do that, and whose blogs feel now colder, more distanced, and somewhat unreachable.

Reading your posts in the evening, or during a day break from my own writing (I am a PhD student) is such a warm, cosy moment. I am grateful to the very sweet person behind all these words, thoughts, and stories.

All the very best to you and your beautiful family! Giulia

    • Joanna Goddard says...

what a lovely note, thank you so much, giulia. xoxo

    • Katy says...

Same here. Agree 100% with everything that’s noted in Giulia’s comment (except I’m not a PhD student, damn).
