A Comfy Bed

A Comfy Bed

Do you love your bed? Many people I know adore their beds, but my beds have always just felt like places to sleep (and/or lie awake obsessing about something random). So when Leesa, the online mattress brand, reached out to see if we’d like to try a mattress, I jumped at the chance…

A Comfy Bed

You order the luxury mattress online, and then it ships for free to your doorstep in this cute little box! You just unroll it, unwrap it and watch it expand to a real mattress size. It was a trip.

A Comfy Bed

We put the mattress on our bed and IT IS AMAZING. I cannot express how much more comfortable it is than our regular mattress was.

A Comfy Bed

The mattresses are 10″ thick and come in all sizes. Each mattress is crafted with three foam layers — including 2″ inches of memory foam (so comfy!) and 2″ of a perforated foam that’s specially developed to keep you cool.

A Comfy Bed

A Comfy Bed

Another bonus is that Alex and I are both restless sleepers, so we sometimes wake each other up during the night by tossing and turning. Because this mattress has memory foam, we aren’t bothered by the other person’s movements. VICTORY! Antoni, jump away! I can’t even feel it!

A Comfy Bed

We loved the mattress so much that we actually ordered another one for Toby’s room.

A Comfy Bed

Needless to say, I’d highly recommend them. Another great part: Leesa is like the TOMS or Warby Parker of mattresses — for every 10 mattresses they sell, they donate one to a shelter.

Offer from Leesa: The first 50 readers to buy a mattress will get $75 off their order. Just use the code CUPOFJO at checkout. Leesa gives you 100 nights to try your mattress, risk-free.

Thank you so much, Leesa!

I have been researching beds and the new bed Sapira is made by Leesa but looks like it might be better for people with multiple pain issues. What I can’t tell is– they say to put on a platform bed or close together slats– did you put yours on a platform bed or on top of your boxspring? Also the Sapira is 11 inches which might make finding sheets really hard!

  2. Lesley says...

My boyfriend and I just moved in together and were in need of a new mattress when I remembered this post! We received the Leesa a couple weeks ago and it. is. magical.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      so glad you like it!!!

  3. Elissa says...

You and your blog have never steered me wrong, Joanna. I’ve had the same mattress since I got my “big girl” bed when I was 4 and just turned 30 a couple weeks ago. My mattress was starting to give me problems, and like you, never felt super amazing. I ordered a Leesa after reading this post and Caroline’s and figured I’d give it a shot. I can’t wait to receive it in the mail and thanks so much for providing a great coupon!

  4. bridget says...

Just curious, Joanna: how has the mattress held up over time? Do you still love it? Thanks!

  5. Ally says...

    Hi Jo,

I know you mentioned above that your pillowcases were from Anthro, but by chance, do you remember the name of the print? I am in love with the print! Thank you!

  6. Aurelie says...

We got a leesa about a week ago and so far find it pretty comfy. But my issue is the smell of the memory foam. Joanna, or anyone else with a Leesa, do you have this problem? Does it get better with time? If not I definitely won’t be able to keep it…

    • Alisiene says...

After months of research, I decided on the Leesa. Ive had it almost a week, and unfortunately the smell is so strong, I haven’t been able to sleep on it yet. I’m hoping it goes away soon, otherwise I will need to return it.

    • Stacy says...

I got my Leesa a week ago and the smell is an issue for me as well. Did it ever go away? How has the bed held up?

  7. Shannon says...

Ok, this is a bit off topic, but the picture of your little guy next to those great pillow cases made me think about how much I would welcome a Cup of Jo blog entry about designing a bedroom for boys. I’ve found it to be much more challenging than designing rooms for my girls! Hope you’ll give it some thought.

  8. Cortney says...

I’m curious, does anyone know how Leesa compares to Casper as far as firmness and comfort go?? I realize this post is sponsored, but I trust your judgement so much after years of reading you blog! Did you choose Leesa because they approached you or because of the comfort level?? Just curious!

  9. What a hoot!

  10. Rebs says...

Leesa’s marketing dept. sure nailed it! Been on pretty much every blog I follow! Kinda cool to see how marketing is changing with the times though

  11. Sarah says...

Yes!!! We got a LEESA and it has totally improved our lives and marriage. It is awesome. We have had it for 6 months and I feel like it’s only MORE comfortable. Best decision we’ve ever made.

  12. H says...

Sadly, we recently returned our Leesa mattress. We loved the convenience and the luxurious cover, but it was just too soft for us—we woke up each morning with back pain. Leesa was actually really great to work with for the return though; they sent 1-800-got-junk to our house to pick it up right away. Their customer service is excellent…so definitely worth a try!

  13. Tessa says...

Has anyone with a latex allergy tried sleeping on one of these mattresses? I know I can’t handle a latex pillow-I’ll get a rash even with two pillowcases, but I love the way the foam mattresses feel!

  14. I have never seen such great packaging, It’s exciting to see your mattress expand to its full shape :) Also love the peacock pillows in toby’s room

  15. Ok I have to ask: What sheets did you pick out? I have a 10″ mattress and cannot find any that are shallower than 15″. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jen

    • I have a 10 inch matress and I use top sheets as bottom sheets. I make hospital-corners on all 4 corners and it works perfectly.

  16. Jill says...

There are 3 mattress companies that I’ve been researching (Casper, Leesa, and Tuft & Needle) but only 1 of those ships to Canada! But it’s the brand that doesn’t have a “giving back” type policy (i.e., donating one after a certain amount of purchases, or instead of returning your mattress you donate it to a shelter and send in your donation receipt) which I really appreciate.

  17. Christa says...

Woo! My husband and I had been searching for a new mattress and had been so putoff by huge shipping costs (we live in rural Northern California) and sleazy sales people! Just ordered a mattress! SO STOKED! THANK YOU!!! :)

  18. A lot of my favorite bloggers are endorsing Leesa mattresses right now, and I’ve got to say, these sponsored posts are working on me! My only concern is, how do these mattresses hold up over time?

I’ve never had a great mattress–my husband and I slept on a futon the first 6 weeks of our marriage until my best friend gave us her old queen bed when she and her husband upgraded! It feels very “grown up” to have a wonderful bed that you love…at 31, I’d love to be there…but there’s so many other things to spend money on as well!

  19. Elena says...

Where is that blanket on the couch from? Thanks!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Terrain. Thanks!

  20. I think this is the one I’ve seen commercials for! I thought it was kind of kitschy (order a mattress, watch it blow up in size!) but if it’s comfortable, then it’s a good investment, right? Thanks for sharing!

My favorite bed – BY FAR – is the Savvy Rest Serenity. They’re organic mattresses with 3 customizable layers of natural latex – meaning they’re not a petroleum product like memory foam is (which causes off-gassing and is not good for you or the planet) but the natural latex feels just like memory foam and works the same without the bad side effects of being a petroleum product. I did a ton of research before investing in ours (2 years ago) and I have no complaints yet. It is the most comfortable bed ever and has helped my back a ton! It’s also delivered to you in a box and set up for you.

    • Alix says...

@Clare, I second this–please choose organic latex over petro-byproducts like “memory foam”! We actually purchased our mattress from IKEA a few years ago (although I don’t think they sell it anymore, sadly) and it’s the most comfortable thing ever.

    • Christina says...

We just got our new latex mattress yesterday and slept on it for the first time, and we’re in love! So comfortable and supportive, and much, much healthier for us. We’re using our old memory foam mattress for the guest room now. It was comfy but after skin issues like eczema were exacerbated it’s just worth the little extra to invest in one with a 20 year warranty. We ordered our latex mattress from Habitat Furnishings, by the way, great company.

    • Jaime says...

Thank you for bringing this up Clare. We did a lot of research and purchased and Essentia mattress because it is made in Canada and free of flame retardants. That nasty chemical is terrible for us and is mandated here in the U.S. :(

  22. Karen T. says...

When did Anton get sooooo big??? I love how sure of himself he looks as he marches around the bed!

  23. I’m not bed connoisseur so I may be totally off-base here, but it sounds like this is a pretty soft bed? We’ll be in need of a new mattress soon, and unfortunately (I guess?) we learned by way of a recent hotel stay that soft mattresses and I do NOT get along. I’m super interested in this bed but am afraid it’ll be too soft :/

    • Stephanie says...

I was worried about that when we bought a similar mattress (we went with Tuft and Needle) – most of the mattresses are quite firm, and a little bouncy!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i typically prefer firm beds, and i really like this one. it has good “hug” (a word i learned on a forum!:) but isn’t too squishy. it kind of feels like a temperpedic where it sort of molds to your body. hope this helps!!

  24. Julie b says...

We bought an awesome natural latex mattress that came with a 21 year guarantee! It was the best decision we ever made! Forget all the fancy furniture, one good bed is all I need! For Australian readers it came from Latex mattress Australia, and there are heaps of independent reviews about their mattresses online. Zzzzz

  25. Lynn says...

I’ve been reading for a few years now but every now and again I’m still surprised at how big the boys are getting. Anton is the age that Toby was when I started reading and THAT’s a trip. xx

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that is a trip!! they grow too fast. (insert heartbreak emoji here)

    • I started reading before there were any kids at all! I have loved watching them grow!

  26. shopgirl says...

    Likee your couch!

  27. Prudence says...

Your bedroom looks beautiful!!! – did i miss a house tour of your place?… and ofcourse Toby can never take a bad picture, he looks deep in thought!

  28. Stephanie says...

I have a king-sized Leesa, and I love it! It’s just the right firmness, not too firm and not too soft. I also love grey and white striped design on the mattress….not that anyone sees it, but I know it’s there :)

    • KAY says...

what about the smell people have asked about

  29. Joanna, what I want to know is where those jeans are from. So cute with holes in the knees and a straight leg!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks! they’re madewell. they make the BEST jeans.

  30. not currently in the market for a mattress, but that sweet pic of Toby petting it ALMOST sold me on buying one just because it’s so so sweet (but will definitely Pin for the future!)

  31. Love your room! Will you share the paint color!?

  32. LB says...

Would you also please share where your nightstand lamp came from? (The one on your left.). It’s so pretty. Many thanks!

  33. Ooooh, we are in the market for a new mattress and will definitely add Leesa to the list. Enjoy your new bed!!

  34. Christina says...

I keep seeing this brand pop up everywhere – mostly bloggers blogging about it! I’d love to try it but a risk free 100 day trial really isn’t that long. Has anyone tried it for more than a year or two or longer??? Do you think it will hold up 7+ years like a normal mattress? Would love to hear your thoughts and feedback over the next 12 months !!!

  35. Christina says...

I so wish this was available in the UK!

  36. emilee says...

love your jeans! what brand are they?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thanks! they’re madewell.

  37. Ali says...

Your spread looks just like the one I just got at Target. Less than $60 for a king! Awesome!!

  38. Jo! U look gorgeous! May I ask you where are your jeans and socks from? They are too cute!

    Thank u very much!
    Xoxo
    Marina

    • Emma says...

Ha! I was wondering the same thing. “Is it weird that I’m Googling ‘fruit socks’?” I asked myself.

      http://bit.ly/1WlOKOc – found them!

P.S. We bought a Tuft & Needle mattress and love it! I hope this direct-to-consumer trend continues. Good quality and great prices? Keep ’em coming!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha you guys are awesome. yes! they’re from bon maison.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      or bonne maison actually!

  39. Amy D. says...

Jo – can you sit in the edge of your bed without falling off? I’m interested in this mattress, but I heard that they arent that sturdy or stable in the edges.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that’s such an interesting question! i’ll try it tonight and report back.

  40. Poppy says...

I LOVE your bedding! It’s like mine only a lot nicer and now that I’ve seen better… I MUST have it! :)

    Where is it from?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

the duvet cover is from dwellstudio, and the long pillow is custommade from josef frank fabric, and the pillowcases are from anthropologie. hope that helps! thank you!! xo

  41. Allyn says...

Can you please share the source for your rug???? I have a bathroom with mauve tile that NEEDS that rug to pull it together. Does your new apartment have a tour? Or did I miss it? I love the wall color in your bedroom as well. I saw your buffalo photo a couple of years ago and my MIL actually painted an exact, huge replica of it bc I couldn’t afford the size photo I really wanted of it.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that is awesome of your mother in law! how cool. and thanks for teh questions about the rugs. they’re actually an eBay score, found by my friend and decorating genius Jenny Komenda.

  42. SEM says...

Is this a queen mattress pictured?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yup!

  43. My issue with memory foam was off-gassing. Your Leesa didn’t smell like its chemical base?

    • My question, too!

  44. This is amazing, Joanna! Comfy mattresses are key considering all the hours we spend sleeping! I’m in the market for a new mattress and this one looks perfect.
Do you know if they ship to Canada?
    P.S. I can’t believe what a big little man Anton is becoming.😊

  45. Lisa says...

Anton’s little smile in that last pic looks SO much like Alex!

    Love that bedspread.

  46. Julianna says...

Love Anton in that last photo!

  47. Lak says...

I have actually been dying to order a Leesa mattress, but I have a very NYC-specific question: how did you get rid of your old mattress? I believe that typical mattress stores will take away the old mattress when they deliver a new one, but a Leesa mattress arrives in the mail!

    • Lauren E. says...

I live in NYC and purchased a mattress online. My super helped me wrap my old mattress in plastic and then he put it on the curb on trash day. Easy as pie!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, i’ve heard that you have to wrap it because of bed bugs, creepily enough!

  48. Isabella says...

Could you share with us where the pillowcases in Toby’s room came from? I’m in love with that peacock feather print!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes! they’re from anthropologie. i just checked and sadly they’re not available anymore, but they do have other lovely sheets: http://bit.ly/1Hh9jz9

unison home and dwell also have great sheets. target can have some really good patterns, too, although they’re not always as soft. hope that helps!! xo

  49. Emily says...

We got a Casper mattress (same concept, and excellent price) and are SOOO happy. I actually can’t wait to replace my daughters bed next. Also, good to note that we ended up with the Casper instead of the Leesa or Tuft & Needle because Consumer Reports gave it the highest ranking for all Latex Foam mattresses.

    • Erin says...

Good to know: did Consumer Reports give reasons why the Casper was higher rated?

  50. My husband and I got a Leesa about 6 months ago! It was such an improvement from the borrowed old mattress that was his parents (look, we are newlyweds, alright). We LOVE our Leesa- and I am a terrible sleeper. I fuss around, moving a lot, and my husband still sleeps through it. AND living in southern california with NO A/C, this mattress really does keep me cooler than our last one.

  51. Christina says...

I refuse to believe that anything can be more comfortable than my tempurpedic :)

  52. Kendra says...

I’ve been on the hunt for a new mattress for some time and have gone back and forth on the memory foam options. I am so thankful a close friend recently got a new mattress that is memory foam because an overnight weekend at her house, I said “I need to try this thing!” She raved about it and what amazing sleep she was getting and how comfortable it was. Let me tell you, my hips and low back have never hurt so bad in my life! I slept TERRIBLY for the two nights. No matter if I slept on my side or on my back, it was agony. Thankfully, I was able to confirm that I will NOT be getting any kind of all foam mattress and I didn’t have to pay any money to find out!

    • Kate says...

      Thanks for this.

    • Yes!! I don’t like them either! When we bought our new mattress the salesman kept trying to get us to just try the Tempurpedic. I think their philosophy is that if you can get your customer to try them they will be so in love they won’t buy a cheaper traditional mattress, but…the joke’s on them! I can’t stand them! They don’t move right, or something. I’m just not a fan.

I’ve also heard they’re not as good for, ahem, grownup activities, but obviously we didn’t test that out in the store ;)

    • Emily R says...

I feel like I’m the only one – but I HATE memory foam! I move a lot, and I feel like I’m trapped in a hole the one time I slept on one. I ended up waking up a million times.

  53. Arielle says...

Man, Leesa is ALL OVER blogland right now! We can’t fit a traditional king mattress up out stairs, but after I heard about Leesa (and did a ton of research) we ordered one! I can’t wait to get it! So glad to hear it is really comfy.

  54. Lauren E. says...

I really hate memory foam but I’m intrigued by the cooling foam… I’ve developed this reeeeally adorable habit later in my life of sweating like a beast while I sleep no matter how cold the room is or how few covers I have on me. My fiance says my body feels like a furnace at night.

    • Jennie says...

Lauren I just had to say I can relate because I have the EXACT same problem and I never knew another woman that was the same way!

    • Lol

    • Laura says...

Add another member to the sweaty sleepers club. Sometimes I wake up on absolute fire and so drenched in sweat that I have to change my clothes.

    • Beth says...

Okay, I never comment either but I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM TOO! What is wrong with us? My husband hates how cold I make the room at night, but I can’t help it!

    • Yvonne says...

I blame it on menopause, but I don’t think that’s always the case.

    • eoc says...

YES. Successive bed partners (that sounds weird) have told me it’s like sleeping beside a nuclear reactor. I cant have ANY room heating on at night no matter how cold it is – and I used to live in a ski resort! Currently I sleep with our winter weight duvet around my waist while my husband pulls it up to his ears, wears thermals and a HAT! He is an unusually cold sleeper though. We’re quite the pair.

    • Annie says...

I love our tempurpedic, but yes, I paid extra for the “Breeze” option. The husband is picky about mattresses, or I would have tried something less expensive first, but I do love it and temperature hasn’t been a problem…

…well, I should say any bigger of a problem, because I’m pretty sure my resting temperature is 105F. He calls me his little furnace and cuddles up to me to keep warm in the winter! :P haha

  55. Wow, that looks super comfy! I really need a good matress since I always wake up with back pains, it is just terrible. I bet they don’t ship to Paris though? ;)

    xx B

  56. Sasha says...

We got the same bed a few months ago! Can you share where your bedding and rug is from?

  57. Nice! My husband and I have been wanting to try either Tuft & Needle or Yogabed for our next mattress. They have similar benefits to Leesa, it looks like!

    • Noelle says...

We love our Tuft and Needle mattress!!

  58. Back in university I sold mattresses as my part-time job, so I know a fair bit about them haha. I’ve owned two “luxury” mattresses so far in my life (the first one with the help of my staff discount!). They both contain memory foam, but honestly I am a hot sleeper and memory foam heats up, so it’s not the right material for me (for the entire thing to be made of)… it’s also a bit too firm for me. I love SOFT beds, and luckily my husband is ok with appeasing my needs haha. I hope you enjoy your new mattress. If you stop liking it, give it a few weeks before you return/exchange as it takes a while for your body to adjust.

  59. Stephanie MacLeod says...

Can I please ask where you gotyour lovely headboard from?

    Thanks,

    Stephanie

  60. Lauren says...

We got a Leesa when we upgraded to a king in our new house – 11 months in and still in LOVE! I can even still sleep well at 6 months pregnant, something I never would have said with our last bed/pregnancy! When our daughter’s toddler bed expands to a full twin we will DEFINITELY be ordering one for her.

  61. Coco says...

Sounds comfy. Does it gather warmth when you’re sleeping? One thing about my current memory foam mattress is that it holds the body heat and gets really hot throughout the night which is annoying.

  62. I’m so tempted by these mattresses, but my husband is always concerned about the lack of bounce for… certain activities.

    • K says...

Ha! I was going to say the same thing! I spent a few weeks on a foam mattress while traveling. I’ve found that foam is great for sleeping and not so great for “not sleeping.” I also really didn’t like sitting on the edge of the bed to do something–talk on the phone, put on my shoes, etc. I felt like I was going to slide off.

  63. Interesting about the mattress…a friend of mine got one of those. And yes, I do have a comfy bed…esp because I have the same duvet cover as you. :)

  64. Rosie says...

Do you need a box spring or can you put it right on the bed frame?

    • Generally with any mattress you can put it right on the bed frame if you have a platform bed with enough slats. If your bed has too few slats, you need a box spring.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, they actually recommend putting it directly on the metal frame or wooden slats, etc. and NOT having a box spring.

  65. Robin says...

We got the twin sized Leesa mattress for my daughter’s room. I LOVE it. Super comfortable. I was concerned about ordering without trying it out first, but they have a really generous return policy.

  66. hands down, you cannot go wrong with a tempurpedic. has all the qualities that you mentioned too (low motion detection, ample support, adapts to the contours of your body). if my home was burning, i would save my tempurpedic mattress.

    • Kendra says...

I second Catherine – I inherited a tempurpedic 5 years ago and it is a game changer. My boyfriend and I just got our first place together this past summer and when it came time to choose who’s bed we were going to use…we chose my tempurpedic over his regular mattress even though it was a much smaller size than his!

  67. Ari says...

Love your bedspread! So clean and crisp! Do you mind letting me know where you got it?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thanks! it’s from dwell. xo

  68. teresa rembe says...

Love your pillow cases. Where are they from?

  69. exciting tip! thank you, Joanna!
