A Mist Opportunity

A Mist Opportunity

As those who know me can attest, there’s one product I can’t get enough of: mist. Many a friend, boyfriend or airplane seat mate has given me the side eye when I pull out a random bottle of liquid and spray it all over my face. But the joke’s on them! Everyone can use a mist. Here’s why…

First things first: Mist feels great. It tones your skin and makes your face glow. Mists are like a sweet ocean breeze blowing through the dry Sahara that is your office cubicle. They’re like coconut water for your face. (Are you convinced yet?)

“But aren’t mists just for summer?” asked one not-yet-converted friend. The answer is nay. Mists are just as useful in the colder months — I would argue even more so. When your skin is ravaged by wind and cold, then forced to spend hours in rooms with artificial heating (aren’t you looking forward to winter?), mist will become your best friend.

A Mist Opportunity

If you’re ready to get misting, here are four great options:

The gateway: Glossier Soothing Face Mist
This spray is like the gateway drug of face mists. It’s so simple, so unassuming, with its minimal packaging and subtle rose scent… then before you know it, you’re hooked. I like to spray it after I’ve washed my face, to prep my skin for absorbing moisturizer and makeup.

The glamorous: Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist
The fancy purple bottle dispenses the tiniest droplets of water, like you just walked through a cloud, and leaves behind a subtle, hard-to-describe glow. You feel a bit like a water nymph or an attractive elf or whatever Liv Tyler plays in The Lord of the Rings. Luminous indeed.

The classic: Caudalie Beauty Elixir
This French product is the seminal mist — it’s like the NARS Orgasm of face mists, if you will. Part toner, part serum, it promises to smooth skin and tighten pores. Cooling and refreshing, this one’s the perfect pick-me-up when you’re heading into a tricky situation, like a job interview or dinner with your in-laws.

The pinch hitter: Aesop Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol
This was my little buddy all summer long, and it shall remain by my side through the fall. The bottle is small, but lasts forever. I keep it in my bag and spritz whenever I’m feeling dry, sweaty, out of sorts, tired, hungry, hangry… you name it. The herbaceous scent leaves you feeling fresh-faced and ready to face whatever’s next. You can even spray it over makeup for a dewy glow, any time of day.

Are you acquainted with mist? Would you like to try it?

P.S. Fall nail polish and another daily necessity.

After reading this, I was excited to try out a facial mist. I picked up one from Whole Foods – Evan Healy’s Rose Petal Hydrosoul. I love it! It’s a refreshing feeling, and the smell is really delightful. I’d recommend it!

    • Thanks Nora. I was reading comments and saw the link. This looks like a great line!!!

  2. Allison says...

I’m curious – can you spray any mist over your makeup and not have everything run?

    • Paige says...

      Right!? I need to know!

    • Amy says...

Yes! In fact, I find it helps blend everything and make it look more natural.

  3. tunie says...

As a teen I read somewhere to mist lightly after applying a final dusting of facepowder to both set your makeup and keep your skin from looking like a mask. It really works! And winter is the most important time, imo: the air is so dry, Na-PCA mist (I use the healthfood brand, TwinLab) is an hourly must to stay dewy and hydrated.

  4. I loooove Evian’s mist. It’s so refreshing!

  5. I have never ever tried mist before! Although after reading this post I am curious to give it a try :)

  6. Jenn says...

My favorite is the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist!! I spray it on daily at my desk for a pick me up :)

    • Lori says...

      Love Jurlique Rose Mist!!!

  7. I started using the Clinique Moisture Surge mist and my dry skin loves it!

  8. Jessica says...

YES – I read somewhere (maybe on this site?) about using a mist or setting spray on your face after applying your make-up (especially if you use a lot of powders) to avoid looking ‘powdery’ and I’ve been obsessed ever since!

The idea of misting pre-make-up is intriguing to me though. Will have to stock up on some new products!

  9. nicole b. says...

Gateway drug to face mists, ha! How do you choose just one, Caroline?! :) I recently discovered – and am now obsessed with – the RE9 anti-aging skincare line by Arbonne. The regenerating toner is my favorite part! You spray it on like a mist. It makes my skin look dewy and glowy. Ahhhhh.

  10. Joanna says...

seminal mist. omg I AM DYING

  11. Ella says...

Thanks for the post! I agree mists smell lovely. You say they “tone your skin”. That sounds nice, but what does that actually mean, Caroline? :)

  12. Raf says...

My favourite mist is Kama Ayurveda Pure Rose Water. Its refreshing and the scent of rose is very subtle. I love its packaging too.

  13. mia says...

I like to make my own using filtered water, aloe, rosewater and witch-hazel. Refreshing, gentle and soothing. I use it on flights, after applying make-up, and especially to refresh my face during hot Sydney summers! MUJI make lovely atomisers in a range of sizes, I always keep a little one in my bag.

  14. Andrea says...

Love Solar Recover. Initially meant to smooth skin after sunburn, I bought it only because I liked the ingredients: distilled water, vitamin E, and essential oils. I spray it on after I wash my face, after applying make up, before bed, and anytime in between as a refresher or pick-me-up. In fact, I stopped using moisturizer all together because it made my skin more even and supple.

  15. I seriously love Caroline’s posts! They are always so witty and fun to read. I’ve never tried mists but have always been intrigued by the idea of a rose water spray. But I do want to know, does it mess up your makeup during the day/what if you wear glasses? Ha, oh well, thanks for the recommendations!! :)

  16. RF says...

I can’t believe Avene Eau Thermale is not in your list! You should try it! :) I started loving the effects of face mist after I tried this. Aside from Avene, I super love Caudalie Elixir and Mario Badescu Facial Spray. I’m looking forward of trying Glossier’s face mist (literally just ordered before heading here!).Yeah, I enjoy face mists!

    • Ana Leonor says...

I totally agree, Eau Thermale d’Avéne is the vintage of all mists… I’ve been using it forever (its petit size is perfect for the handbag)!

  17. Cassie says...

I use Laura Mercier’s Flawless Skin Perfecting Water Moisture Mist after exfoliating in the shower and it has changed my once dry, flaky skin to soft and glow-y. I have used the Mario Badescu one as well but prefer this one. Life changing!

  18. I am obsessed with mists! I love your lineup (and totally agree the Glossier one is a gateway into the mist world – haha love it :) – another one for your mistlist: Josie Maran’s Lavender Mist – so good!

  19. MissEm says...

I liked the Mario Badedcu one but then realized it has all these artificial dyes in it. I just kept the empty bottle and started mixing aloe and rosewater together. It ends up being about a dollar a bottle (but I’m still tempted to try the Tatcha one).

  20. Kirstin says...

if you like to mist you seriously have to try Jurlique’s Rosewater balancing mist. It is the Queen! There is no other. Truth! I promise.

  21. lindsay marie says...

Would the Evian water mist be like these? that is what I use. I can’t put anything with perfumes on my skin or I get a rash.

    • You may want to try a hydrosol, Lindsay! I mist with lavender hydrosol at night and use a Moroccan rose one as well. Hydrosols are basically the whole essence of the plant steamed into a convenient little mist bottle. I love them! No perfumes, etc. added either.

  22. Caite Millar says...

NEROLI WATER! Kerstin Florian makes a good one. It is so refreshing and smells amazing. Also calms down irritated skin.

  23. Jennifer says...

    Any recommendations for sensitive skin?

    • Elise says...

I love the Heritage Rosewater mist. Simple ingredients, calming, hydrating, and smells so good! You can find it at most natural grocery stores. I have super sensitive skin and like using this before applying my facial oils or moisturizer.

  24. YES! I’m glad someone else agrees with me on the importance of these little blasts of perfection. I spray my face all the time!!! I was recently at a spa and they had this face mist that I’ve become OBSESSED with. They gave me a tiny travel kit with it inside, and needless to say I used it within the week of getting home. It’s like an addiction…

  25. M says...

MAC Fix+!! I use this constantly! I’ll spray it on my foundation brush then pickup some product. It makes buffing foundation in much smoother. Sometimes I’ll spray my entire face before but most of the time i’ll do it after I’m completely done with my makeup. It gives your skin a natural finish, especially if you accidentally overdo it on powder.

A couple of months ago MAC came out with limited edition scents and I went on a crazy rampage trying to collect backups haha.

  26. Jo says...

I have to ask, does it not make your hair massive?! I can totally get on board with the face mist benefit thing, but I can’t imagine using it as my sort-of-ugly-wavy-when-not-styled hair does NOT do well with moisture and is likely to become twice the size…think Monica from friends in humidity! Don’t you find this is an issue?!

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

No, it doesn’t! I have frizz-prone, lion-like hair, but it’s pretty possible to spray the mist only on your face and avoid your hair. And if any of it does venture up there, I haven’t found it to interfere. It’s a pretty light cloud of moisture.

  27. Chrissy Shea says...

I have to throw in the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Rose, Herbs and Aloe! Probably a close match to Glossier.

  28. Amy says...

I’m a bit skeptical that a mist can go over your foundation/make up without making it go gross…but hey I haven’t exactly tried it! I think my husband would benefit more from a mist with all that shaving and dry winter skin…and no make up to worry about messing up ;)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

I was skeptical too, but Caroline mentioned that and now I actually put my makeup on and THEN spritz on a mist, and it helps my makeup look dewy instead of caked on.

  29. Theresa says...

You’ve inspired me to try a mist! Thank you for posting a range of prices as well!

  30. Jennie says...

Can you mist over makeup to get that dewy look? If so do you have a recommended one for that? I am looking for something for winter that is like the equivalent of face oil in mist form that I can use to moisturize throughout the day, over makeup.

    • M says...

The Tatcha one will give you a super dewy look! You can spray your face before your makeup application or after. It won’t set you makeup but it’ll make you very glowy :)

  31. I LOVE MISTS too!!!!! I live in Florida and my skin is in a constant battle against the humidity and the soaring temps! My favorite Mist is the Boots Botanics Organic Rosewater Toning Spritz. I get it at Target, its affordable, lasts FOREVER, smells amazing and is the perfect mid day pick me up. In the summer I wear this over a base of coconut oil and no makeup and my skin stays dewy and fresh all day!

  32. Ashley says...

How can it be hydrating but have alcohol as the second ingredient? Wouldn’t that dry out your face???? Thanks!

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

I had the same thought about the Aesop one, but it really is moisturizing! But my skin gets oily by mid-day, especially in the summertime. If you have very dry skin, an alcohol-free option is probably a safer bet.

  33. Jenn says...

Glad you’re feeling better, Caroline! I want to try the Aesop mist. If you like rosy scented ones, I just got one from DeVita at Whole Foods that’s super rosy and has a really fine mist. Nuxe has a rosy one too. I never really understood the point of mists before, but I’m such a fan now of the little face freshening spritz and the rose scents or spa scents for the quick mood boost/spirit recharge. I’m intrigued by the mists from Tata Harper and Omorovicza, but (because?) they are crazypants expensive!

  34. jeannie says...

I, too, am addicted to mists, especially in the morning. They really make me feel awake and ready for the day. So refreshing!

  35. I just started misting with Caudalie….everyone seems to be commenting on my skin and it must be the misting!! So simple, but big results!! xo

  36. cjkeys2 says...

I’m on my second bottle of the Glossier spray. Cannot get enough of it. Thinking about mixing it with some vodka and seeing if it’s just as hydrating in cocktail form.

  37. Laura says...

If you want a French one, ditch the Caudalie and try Avene’s instead. Much less perfumey and uber refreshing!

  38. I bought the Eau Roma Water from Lush, and became a face mist believer. I think I overused it because I would get spray happy! Haha! I recently made my own to hold me over with vitamin e oil & lavender. Now I’m excited to give some of your suggestions a try.

Speaking of face products, Have you tried ACURE products?! Holy smokes they are the bomb!! I just recently started using the brightening scrub (life altering!) & night cream. I convinced my husband to use the face scrub and he agreed, & said they should sell that stuff in a huge tub! Haha! I don’t see myself using anything else! They’re not paying me…promise X !

  39. Sara says...

I love The Body Shop’s Vitamin E spray–I’ve been using it since I was in high school and am now in my 30s. It’s great to use in lieu of a cream or lotion moisturize at night during the warmer months when my skin is more naturally moisturized or to use throughout the day on top of makeup during the winter when skin gets really parched. Also very affordable.

  40. I love using hydrosols as face mist or just water with some essential oil added to it. It’s nice to get that refreshing feeling with something so simple and natural.

  41. steph says...

I’m all about moisturizing since I moved to the SW. My love affair began with it, tho, when I started running and hated lotion getting in my eyes when I sweated. I’m a big fan of Little Barn Apothecary :)

  42. Emilie says...

I am dying for something that keeps my face looking “dewy” as I live in the driest high-altitude climate. Is the Aesop mist the only one that can be sprayed on top of makeup?

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

No, any of these are designed for mid-day pick-me-ups and can be sprayed on top of makeup!

    • Emilie says...

Awesome, thanks Caroline! Is there one which stands out to you as the most “dewy”?

  43. After reading about True Nature Botanicals on here recently, I went and ordered the travel kit, which includes a face mist. First, the products are AMAZING and my skin looks incredible. Second, I love the way the face mist feels! After this post, I’ll invest in an everyday one. Loving the beauty advice on this website!

  44. Tiffany says...

up popped one eyebrow. for someone who has to go basic due to dry skin this just might help a sista out.

  45. I’m a fellow addict. I have Heritage Store Rosewater & Glycerin at my office and Mario Badescu at home. My colleagues come in for a spritz when they’re feeling stressed. It’s better than a candy bowl!

    • Emily says...

YES! Heritage store rose water is the best! And it’s cheap. (Check Amazon, or any health food store.) I’m a big fan. Have bottles everywhere! Even decanted some into a tiny bottle to keep in my purse. Nothing beats a face spritz.

  46. You named all my faves! I adore the Tatcha, Aesop and Glossier mists. I have them all and use them all. The only one I didn’t enjoy was the Caudalie mist. I didn’t love the smell, it was just too much on my face.

  47. I don’t know about misting just yet, but I do wanted to compliment on the picture in this article: such a cool shot!

I use the Eminence Organics Stone Crop Mist. It’s green… Like split pea soup green? But it’s always great to spray and go. I’m curious to try the Glossier, I recently bought the Skin Tint and am digging it.

  49. Mist is awesome! I really like Evian mist spray! It’s rather inexpensive and works just as well as the other products – not drying at all I heard it’s also a french best kept beauty secret! lol.

Have a great week and thank you for sharing these!

    • Dawn says...

I second the Evian spray! It’s an inexpensive, drugstore gem.

  50. anu says...

I am a recent convert! Mists are like a breath of fresh air! I love the L’avene thermal spring water spray I recently got while visiting Paris. Although, I do wonder, if I would feel equally good spraying a fine mist of regular water on my face :-).

  51. katrina says...

I’ve tried some, and they are nice…but I have a sneaking suspicion that they are just water with a few chemicals tossed in, sold at exorbitant amounts to the very gullible public. Which might actually describe a lot of beauty treatments. Hah!

    • I thought the same thing, but the Tatcha is amazing, and all natural. It really does give you an ethereal glow.

  52. I also use Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb and Rosewater and love it!! It also sets your makeup which is great :)

    • julie says...

the mario b. one is my favorite!

  53. Kait says...

I am packing all the face mists in my hospital bag to get me through labor. I love them! I will have to try the Aesop one..

  54. Ok. But here’s the REAL kicker — what about bangs? It seems like it would just speed up the oily bang factor by a zillion percent, or would I have to just pin them back for a few minutes?

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Ahhhh, the million-dollar question. This is a very good point. I would probably hold them back with my fingers, spray the mist on my bang-free face, let it dry for a second, then let the bangs return to their natural habitat.

  55. Dee says...

L’avene thermal spring water spray for me every time! Makes your skin so much softer, and I was a total cynic until I tried it!

    • Helennie says...

I am that cynic! Your comment startled me because I was secretly hoping face mists are actually awesome and totally worth their money. I’ll give Avène a try!

  56. artemisia says...

I don’t understand what they do, exactly. I have super-dry skin and I would think it would be somewhat drying. (I tend to carry an oil-based moisturizer around with me so maybe I’m an outlier).

    • Artemisia, I have very dry skin too – especially in the winter. I find my skin starts to dry out mid-afternoon; but I don’t want to wash all my makeup off to remoisturize. I use Clinique Moisture Surge Spray. Just a couple of spritzes does the trick and doesn’t mess with my makeup.

  57. SK says...

I am intrigued! Do you have to rub it in after you spray it?

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Nope! After you spray it on, it kind of just evaporates after a minute.

  58. I’m so in love with that Caudalie mist, just bought it and already doing wonders for my skin. I am stalking the Sephora website looking at that Tatcha mist and seriously wanting it, but not sure if it’s good for my oily skin so waiting to read more reviews about it! The packaging is beautiful.

  59. Lust’s Tea Tree Water Toner mist works wonders for people whose faces get oilier as the day goes on :)

  60. Patricia says...

Doesn’t it mess up your makeup?

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

No, it actually doesn’t! They’re designed to spray very finely and evenly, even over makeup.

  61. Monica says...

I Love Glossier’s mist…I keep it in the fridge since it is refreshing anytime after hot days in Phoenix. Little feeling of freshness.

  62. Heather says...

But… what is it?? Loving this post, but I’m not sure I really know what this product is in general….?! At first, I thought you meant perfume, and then thought you meant a make-up setting spray, but you mentioned using it before make-up…. Is it like a toner but in spray form?

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Hi Heather! Yes, it’s a little like a toner and a light moisturizer in spray form. You can use it to hydrate after you’ve washed your face, or to freshen up throughout the day. Some formulas (like the Caudalie) are more on the toner side, while others (like the Tatcha) feel more moisturizing. Hope that helps!

  63. robin says...

I so love a mist! I like Boots Botanics Organic Rosewater Toning Spritz (got it at Target). I keep it in my office and use it a few times a day to perk up my skin!

    • Pamela says...

Agree! I bought this on a whim and I love it. It lasts forever, too.

    • I was just going to post the same thing. I love that stuff! It’s hard to pass up for under $10. I use it all the time and I’m still not out of it!

  64. Chelsea B says...

I highly recommend, via my bestie, Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb and Rosewater (it’s only $7!).

    • Beck says...

Do you want mine? I realized after buying this that I hate the smell of rosewater lol
